I was in the dentist the other day and a customer came in for treatment shirtless. Unbelievable rudeness and i was gobsmacked that they treated him like that.

"...they treated him like that".

What was the "unbelievable rudeness" and who treated whom like what?

Can you do that in London? New York? Sydney? Tokyo?

Then why would anyone think it's okay in Thailand?

I do see Westerners doing it, even in Bangkok. Some are heavily tatted.

Not a good look, and unlikely to make Thais any more smitten of foreigners.

Tying into another topic about TAT's latest target demographic, I really don't like seeing women dressed as giant eggplants, either. I guess if one founded a religion where upper body nudity was dictated by one's deity, maybe it would be as acceptable as eggplant suits.

When I lived in the USA, many places used to have signs "No shoes, no shirt, no service" a sentiment with which I actually agreed.

It's reasonable, IMO, to think that anyone walking down a city street is likely to want to visit a shop, store, restaurant or whatever at some point.

I tend to think it shows something unpleasant about the attitude of someone who does this and I personally tend to avoid them.

Having said that, on a beach road, my stance is "up to you" but it still says "something" about the person.

I personally feel uncomfortable going shirtless in the street but sometimes I walk the beach (say Pattaya Dolphin to Walking St) and I'll take my shirt off, but put it back on when i return to the street.

I am only mildly curious to learn if it was primarily Christian Missionary pressure, as is documented in so many other cultures, or if it was a Thai motivated change primarily to be seen as an advancing country.

Certainly prior to the 20th century, Christian missionaries and other outside factors influenced attitudes towards toplessness.

In the 20th century, the 10th mandate of the 12 Thai Cultural Mandates as set out by Field Marshall Plaek Songgram required "appropriate dress" in order for Thailand to appear as a modern society.

So both, I guess.

That guy in the shorts feels it's too hot for a shirt, but the fully-dressed guy in the yellow trousers seems to be doing ok.

He is obviously not OK.

Note the orthopedic shoes .

Up until the early 20th century, many Thai women used to go around topless.

I wonder why that particular element of "Thainess" is no longer promoted.

You haven't seen my 86 year old MIL walking around topless or you would know why its not promoted
