Yes, I recently had to pay 1200 Baht to bring 20 kilos of luggage on a flight , some people who are 20 kilos overweight should pay extra as well

Should skinny people then get a refund?

This is overdue, only fair that eventually people pay based on weight like they do for hold luggage and hand luggage

Nothing to with fatties, read the report.

It is a data collection exercise (optional).

Your post is nothing to do with the data collection story.

"The process is used to help determine the weight distribution on aircraft, and calculations need to take place every five years".

Start your own topic by all means if you want to propose higher fares for people over a certain weight.

Nah, but maybe more baggage allowance.????

Compared to the Korean standard weight I have to admit I am a little heavier. ????

I would have thought that there is an average weight for the price of a ticket amongst normal-ish sized people. So combined body & carry on weight sounds fair to me...

Obese folk should fly business, only fair for the normal-ish sized folk who have to deal with an obese neighbour, but that's another topic..........????

Always an inflammatory debate.

But should a fit and healthy 183cm 95kg muscular person pay more than a 150cm 40 kgs skinny girl ???

Why ?

same reason heavy cases cost more.

I reckon they shouldn't put an extra big person next to another big person. My shoulders are quite wide, nightmare to sit next to another big guy

Should this 40kg beauty subsidise the fuel needed to lift 95kg into the air?

A bit like the suggested 'pay per mile' for cars in London. You should pay for what you use. Didn't Maggie's Poll Tax try to do that. 4 people use 4 x as much water as one, etc etc.

I'm perhaps sensitive to the issue because I see a bigotry seeping into each similar debate.

Firstly, airlines Economy seats have got smaller over the years as the airlines have tried to optimise and economise - thats one issue.

But, people, with better diets have become taller and physically stronger, thus heaver.

And thats ignoring the Obesity issue.

Thus - IMO I believe it would be wrong to charge people based on size, especially if they are within healthy brackets for their height / physique.

I see a grossly overweight 150cm tall Asian adult who probably weighs less than a tall, physically fit rugby player !! - why should the fit guy get charged more ?

Another example, why should a 50kg girl pay 5kg excess baggage and a 100kg man pay nothing extra?

Those physically fit and healthy people who weight 80-100 kgs could be your local fire-men...

... why should their travel be penalised when its a requirement that they stay in their physical prime ??

Why should a 'tall person' pay more ??... are we now going to discriminate on genetics ?

It should go by body width...................????

I have had to endure a long flight next to a fat bloke, who's elbows spent most of their time up my nose, they should  feed them at different times too, so folk like me can use our elbows whilst eating............????

Because she has a choice to carry extra baggage.... A physically fit and healthy 100kg man can't cut off a limb to lower his travel weight.

It will stop all those people wearing three layers of clothing to avoid excess baggage costs.

My Brother-in-Law is an ex Rugby player... His nick-name is 'shoulders'....

He's fit, healthy, he cycles, has run marathons... but he still has to walk though doors sideways (exaggeration but you get my point)...

.... why should he have to pay anything extra ???

The whole concept is morally wrong and it gets toxic when discussing overweight people.

I can understand the arguments, but each one of them presented by someone who's perhaps forgotten or overlooked a little of their humanity.

Seems fair to me, a girl said to me once why should she pay the same for her petite clothes as a size 18 bloater, also seems fair

Last year I sat in the same row (fortunately there was a seat between us) as a guy who was so obese opening the tray table to eat was impossible... (seat in front upright there was a 1-2" gap).  IF the person in front reclined, the seat would have been touching his stomach.

I really felt for the guy, I don't know what medical issues he had etc... but figured life has to be pretty tough for him.

I would be more inclined for a mandatory breathalyzer test,  as intoxicated passangers are not only a nuisance but also a hazard onboard.

You didn't asker why a size 6 was buying the same style clothes and a size 18 bloater ?

Additionally (playing along) the costs are not so much the material, but the profits.

So... a dress has $1 of material might have a $2 material cost for a larger person, but the dress still costs $60...

(I don't know the exact material costs etc which all differ but thats the explanation I read a while ago).

No, they get extra baggage allowance.

passenger + baggage can = xxx kg.

And many people fly business class to avoid sitting next to people they may not 'appreciate'...

So, the argument could be turned around, If someone is particular about who they sit near and don't want to sit next to a large overweight person, should they pay a premium to ensure they are 'safe' ???

Thats more of a devils advocate response, however the point is somewhat valid.

This issue isn't quite as black and white as some people are making out.

I suspect 165 lbs / 75 kg will be revised.  Raised 10lbs/5kgs as a new standard.   Airlines certainly won't like that, and fares will rise also.
