Thaksin Shinawatra’s leaning toward the establishment, the new governing coalition bringing together past ideological rivals, and the rise of the Move Forward Party with its own die-hard supporters all point to the high possibility that the red-shirt movement will become splintered with some of its elements more extreme than others.

 

Will the red shirts remain a political force to be reckoned with? Possibly but tough. Possibly because Pheu Thai, which they support, is being forced to compromise, not exactly willing to do so. This means that there is always a chance the red shirts will return to their characteristic aggression.

 

Tough because even if Pheu Thai wants to make another U-turn yet, such a move will be difficult for obvious reasons. If Pheu Thai finds it hard to manoeuvre, so will the red shirts.

 

The movement will have many shades. Very likely, some red shirts will become benign, others will maintain the trademarked rebellious attitude, and some others still will turn “orange” completely after disavowing Pheu Thai. What happens to the Srettha coalition will determine which group is the biggest and then the long-term future of the movement.

Years ago Tulsathit used to write insightful articles, but the last few months his column has become vacuous, devoid of any meaningful comment. 

Why doesn't he go into detail?

For example, Thaksin, PT don't need or want the red shirts now. They're an embarrassment to the party that has decided to join the establishment. 

The red shirts themselves can be divided into two camps. Those that are foremost devoted to Thaksin, they may continue to rally for him to come back as PM, roll out more populist policies, they're indifferent to his betrayal of democracy in Thailand. 

Yet somehow I think they'll be encouraged to drop the red shirts, a sign if troubled times in the past, now over PT are in government.

The second group, political activist leaders such as Jatuporn, Nattawut, Sombat, have already left,  alongside with their followers.

They could be a big asset to MF which is sometimes accused of being too middle class and urban centric. 

If Pheu Thai stall on constitutional reform, voluntary conscription, already there are signs they will, then the political red shirts could be a useful addition to the MF arsenal

No, Pheu Thai is exactly willing to do so. Betrayals, breaking promises, changing allegiances are the staple of Thai political parties, the only exception being MFP. Ideologies are useful to create a movement, once the party has power, those ideologies are shelved.

Exactly. PT traded away their future for a few years on top. The future is orange. My wife is discarding all her red clothes and buys anything orange she sees.

This government is too unstable to last very long, too many cooks in the kitchen. A couple of years maybe and then MFP takes the reigns with, oh wonder, the support of PT, Mr T guiding the ship into safe harbour.

I think the big reason for the push was that when they lost he saw the writing on the wall and realized whatever deal he could make was the best one if it got him home.

I think PT has served its purpose. “They” used the situation to maneuver into a position where they could negotiate Thaksins return, mission accomplished. He’s back now and as mentioned, under the control of the establishment, let’s see how things pan out in the forthcoming months.
