Come on!

On my way to work this morning, I lost count of how many women I saw with 28 inch waists (and a sugary drink in hand) and I didn't see very many men with big guts either. A lot of slender chaps my age.

Compare it to the West.

Thailand   1.71 m 69.8 kg 23.8   1.59 m 63.3 kg 25.0

How are there so many slim, petite, slender Thais?

Especially compared to westerners. I don't get it.

-They don't fear carbs.

-They don't avoid sugar.

-Most of their food is stir fried in bad oil.

- They don't do keto or any other fad diet.

They don't prioritize whole grains or greens.

- I don't think they count calories or out any effort into staying slim

-They don't have a fitness/exercise culture.

How do they do it? It is just good genes?

They pretty much live off lots of white rice, sugar, and oil with some meat and fruit, while never exercising.

Any insights?

Slim 5555

50% are fat

They don't. When I started coming here 25 years ago they were all slim. Now not so much. 25 years from now they will be the same as westerners. Blame KFC, McDonald's, etc.

I think more Dunkin Doughtnuts, bags of chips & fizzy pop is more to blame...:stoner:

Yes, here's an insight for you @FruitPudding from The Thaiger. Do bear in mind that this referring to Bangkok., but do note the opening paragraph:

'According to health experts, more than 50% of Bangkok’s population are fatties and believe there is a pressing need to address the health of lard-arsed residents not only in the capital but throughout the Kingdom of Thailand'.

another thing...  as in Australia , obesity is also a socio-economic problem. People who have less money seem more likely to eat fatty or sweet foods. I think this is why there seem to be more 'large sized' people in the rural areas here in LOS.

people in higher economic brackets tend to be have higher self esteem & are more concerned about body image, and their general health.

gross generalisations I know - but just my thoughts on the matter.

Mostly it has to do with their genes, also they're not into heavy carbs, such bread potatoes and pastas sweets and other kinds of sugar intake like non Thai, the also don't eat as often as us and when they do it's smaller portions, also they move a lot owing to their life style.

You've made a valid point.

Why it earned 4 laughing emojis, as of now,  is a question...

What is mind-blowing to me is the amount of PORK Thai's eat!  It's everywhere, every few feet on the street, in every restaurant, and they care less about how much fat is hanging off their pork meat!

if you know about nutrition, you know that pork fat is your friend

Do Thais stay slim???

Really?

Too many topics here where many members moaning about how ladies here have gained weight (compared to the 80's and 90's)

Sorry to OP, you got this totally wrong.

Edit: also Thai Press has written about the obesity problem, multiple times.

Correct, should have seen them 40 years ago when I first came here.  You struggled to find a fat girl with only the odd old fat chinese lady.  Once again our influences ahve brought change, this time in the form of french fries, kfc, bread etc etc.

You've named all the things to stay slim and healthy:

Carbs are good, don't be carb phobic, rice, potato, bread all good

Sugar is ok

Whole grains over rated, processed white bread for example easy to digest.

Low fat, they use a little oil to cook.No keto or other fad, not obsessed by eating protein.

They should eat more veg and fiber though hence they have a high incidence of bowel cancer.

When i meet slim older ladies i ask how they stay slim, they are careful what they eat, not too much

My wife eats 2 - 3 times the volume of food I eat.. Day and night, wake up for a mama noodles late evening just before bed, instant food the second she wakes up, 5 plus 'meals' a day.. A bowl of noodles every trip out of the house, a couple of dishes grabbed as a snack between meals..  Yet shes 45kg and fits the same jeans she did 20 years ago in her 20s (she just found a pair recently, not an exaggeration).

She is active and hard working for house work and garden etc, shes 'busy' but the sheer volume of poor quality food she consumes is truly crazy. Shes eating now as I type this !!

I often think it may be to do with chilli and metabolism.

Sexercise? Just kidding, please don’t take any offense.

thais are getting fatter by the day.

the obesity crisis is well and truly in full swing here.

however I tend to agree with a lot of what you have said.

I know a lot of thais who drink beer daily, eat like pigs and are stick thin.

go figure.
