A lawyer’s hopes of becoming a National Anti-Corruption commissioner were dashed on Monday, when the Senate voted him down.

The 110 votes that Sombat Thoratham, an independent legal adviser, received were less than half of the senate, which is 125. Eighty-four senators voted against Sombat while 24 others abstained.

Before casting their votes, some senators told the chamber that Sombat, a former committee member of Bangkok Mass Transit Authority, was the subject of a complaint concerning advertising space bidding on 1,109 air-conditioned buses.

"Independent"

The NACC is a key asset for the yellow-green establishment (to which the current Senators belong). They are not going to approve someone who is not fully compliant. Same for the EC (which will select the members of committees and panels who will select the next batch of Senators).

The junta senators strike again.

How long will it take to get rid off the senators, EC members and Constitutional Court members ?

Now never, you have the military in the coalition.

So he was obviously the right man for the job but not as well-connected as was required.

The NACC currently has only five commissioners, while the full bench is nine.

The National Anti Corruptions Commission doesn't seem to be functioning at all.

They measure corruption in country miles here he needs to try harder a dead friend would be useful ????

Another flaw in the constitution. Ideally, the NACC Commissioners should be elected by the parties in Parliament, with a percentage of their seats. For example: MF 2, PT 2, BJ 1, PP 1, RTSC 1, Democrats 1, others 1.

The unelected Senate should have no influence there.

Never, as they appoint each other.

Of course, it may be possible to change the constitution, but they have a say on it, too.

After the recent electoral debacle, the only remaining asset of the yellow-green network is its hold on the Judiciary and semi-judiciary (agencies). They will never let it go.
