The Department of Livestock Development, along with other key agencies, has begun the process of burying over 4.5 million kilogrammes of illicit pork, seized at Laem Chabang Port in Chon Buri.

This gargantuan task, involving 161 shipping containers of illicit pork, is set to be completed within eight days at the Animal Feed Research and Development Centre in Sa Kaeo. However, residents are expressing concerns over possible environmental impacts, including foul odours and underground water contamination.

The second day of the operation saw the containers being weighed at the Animal Feed Research and Development Centre in Sa Kaeo before the illicit pork was transported to a burial site at the rear of the centre. The site spans over 10 acres, with four prepared pits, each being 9 metres wide, 4 metres deep and 150 metres long.

Boonyakris Pinprasong, the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Livestock Development, visited the illicit pork site to ensure the smooth running of the operation. He assured that the operation is being closely monitored by experts to minimise the impact on the local community.

The author couldn’t work out that this was 45,000 Tonnes ?

As per the article… why bury it ?
Surely, it’s ’s going to go rotten & get into the water table.

Shouldn’t it be burnt ?

or better still, if it’s not ‘bad’ already give it to people who need it… destroying good food or a horrible waste.

Free BBQ day would be a foolproof way to win the hearts of the Thai people. Somebody shouda mentioned it to the fools ????

So many better choices... all they could do was bury it?

I would hope not as it would be wrong!

4.5 million kilogrammes equals 4,500 Tonnes.

They could have at least made pet food from it.

the deputy director-general confirmed that based on previous experiences from similar operations in Phetchaburi and other locations, no adverse effects were reported.

So it happens over and over again, doing nothing real to stop it, only confiscate and bury. Plastic, paper, meat all in the ground, costing a lot of effort and polluting to do so.

Did they charge the sender for clearing? illicit, they missed a paper?

Smuggling then? They find sender and receiver and put them to jail with big fine?

As from a half year, it starts again, as said in article

Would you eat it?

Shipped un-refrigerated from China, similar to the NY case.

Anthony Bucci, an agency spokesman, said the meat was "primarily cured," and the cargo containers were not refrigerated.

Incineration would have been the correct way; everything else is "questionable". Wondering on whose property this eight day funeral exercise is taking place?

Oops !!... Quite right - thanks for the correction.

I hope they bury it well. I'm reminded of a news report some years back about a village in rural Thailand where there was a rabies scare. The authorities rounded up all the soi dogs, had them put down and buried outside the village. A few local lads had the bright idea of digging some up and having a barbecue. The report ended by saying they were under observation in hospital.
