Most People Favour Closing Night Venues At 2 A.M.: NIDA Poll

MOST people are in favour of closing night venues at current 2 a.m. rather than extending it to 4 a.m. as being moved by the Pheu Thai-led government, a new NIDA Poll shows, Thai Rath newspaper said Sunday (Oct. 22)

 

The NIDA Poll, conducted during October 17-19, 2023 with a total of 1,310 Thai nationals over 20 years of age and from all walks of life and in all regions of the country participating, also showed that an equal total of 27.71% either were certain extending the closing time of entertainment venues to 4 a.m. would boost income or did not think it would help.

 

On the other hand 26.72% said they were not at all sure it would help while 16.56% said they were very confident it would boost income while 1.30% said they did not know, did not have an answer or were not interested.

However 46.41% of respondents agreed that there were already enough drink driving checkpoints while 38.02% said they should be increased.

Update: People Equally Divided Over Extending Night Venue Opening Hours

PEOPLE HAVE BEEN FOUND to be roughly equally divided over the planned extension of opening hours for all entertainment venues nationwide, according to the latest NIDA Poll.

 

The poll, recently conducted with a total of 1,310 people from all walks of life in all regions of the country, has found 41.7% of the respondents say entertainment venues should open until 2.00 a.m. as currently legally allowed.

 

That compared to 41.1% of the respondents who say entertainment places should legally open until 4.00 a.m. as planned by the Pheu Thai-led government.

If they allowed them all to open whenever they wanted then the same thing would likely happen as happened in other places where they introduced this.

 

I was in the UK for a few years at the point where they opened it up to wide scale 24 hour licensing and I knew a few pub owners back there at the time.

 

Licenses in the UK contain the hours which you're allowed to open (they used to anyway - not sure about now) but when they changed the rules anyone could opt in to the 24 hour license, at least where I was located and from what I heard most of them were supermarkets who remained open all night but  many pubs got the 24 hour license option and never really used it, maybe they opened for an extra hour or two - but the option was there if they put it on the renewal forms.

Previous to this the default closing time was 11pm unless they got some kind of special exemption which was not easy to obtain, especially for a pub in an area with houses.

 

You see most people don't want to stay out all night, so what happens is they likely stay open a bit later but very few places end up being open all night simply because most of the customers go home long before 2 and 3am and a lot more go home by 4am, this leaves some who do want to stay out all night - but not many - and if I learned one thing about nightlife over the years it's that people will congregate in a few places which contain plenty of other people - the places that are empty will remain empty.

 

Whether it's worth staying open after 3 or 4am was debatable for many due to increased staff costs, etc.

 

If everywhere was allowed to open until 6am you would have nearly every bar sitting there with no customers so they would close anyway.

 

I'll bet they didn't ask the tourists what they want - because these are the people who are on holiday trying to have fun and are much more likely to stay out later than usual and the following day is always very flexible for them.

Bad things start to happen later at night. It only makes good sense. I know the club and booze lobbies are strong, but people don't want the crime or the drunk driving this causes.

With the thousands of budding alcoholics in Thailand (almost inevitable in places like Patts) it's about urging them to go home at a decent hour and get some sleep, rather than keep them binging 24/7 to their (and other's) detriment.

Easily said, almost impossible to do when you own a condo in this market.

 

That said, I do favour a time like 2 AM for closing, because jumping from midnight to 4 AM is ludicrous, baby steps, guys!

That is easier said than done...... I say to those wishing to party all night, YOU go elsewhere! Not sure the year has a lot to do with it, you may not yet have noticed but life and crime is not improving as time passes..... maybe time to take a review of the issues.

I  don't  see what such places are allowed to open at all. They a major health hazard and they cause a  staggering number of road accidents.

The bars may open for another 2 hours, but punters will just spread out the time the drink, go out an hour or two  later stay out an hour or two later... no difference.

I wonder if the venues have calculated the extra costs of staff, and electricity to stay open those extra 2 hours...

I wonder how many of those people are able to make informed decisions. Do they regularly go out at night? Late? Or maybe their children? Do they live in a nightlife area, and will a different closing time make a difference to them? Or is it just: They shouldn’t do that!
Personally, I go out from time to time, but not as much anymore as I used to. And it’s a long time ago that they closed any bar while I was still there.
When this discussion about changing from 2am to 4 am came up I asked one of the girls in Nana what she thinks about that. And she told me now they close already at 3am and not 2am. The same was confirmed by a friend in Soi Cowboy. I wonder how many of the people in this survey know details like that. I guess very few. So, they make decisions based on what?

It is true 1 or 2 am is more than enough... The government has rules for alcohol sales hours in daytime, but at night there is no problem to buy.. and how many accidents are happening in the early mornings??Besides drugs use is common all over the world to stay up late and imprvive the fun. THailand is not different. Which normal people will go out till 4 am during weekdays?? They don't go to work?? And the people working in the entertainment you can't expect they give p their normal life. Working at night is not good for your health and besides that in a very noisy society as Thailand sleeping in daytimes is very difficult. And the same is for the people living around an entertainment venue.. They have to work the next day and when the club/bar or whatever is open and the noisy drunk visitors go home, or even fights, and the very loud music from the boxes with drums which you can hear kilometers away, people will sleep worse, which is not good for their jobs example less concentrated...The whole idea is stupid to open the entertainment business till 4 am.. an idea of someone with no brains otherwise he.she would have thought about it better.. And tourists.. they don't care.. If the tourists want to go to the bar till 4 am it are not the tourists Thailand is always aiming for

What other result could they expect get, when they are asking people, who don't give a rats ass about night venues in other regions. They should stick to asking people who frequent night venues or live nearby one and publish the results for both groups.

I doubt it would result in more income. More revenue, maybe, but income, no. Perhaps one or two places per "Entertainment Zone" could squeeze a profit, but most places---when considering staff costs, electricity, etc.---would not see income. Not enough revelers.

 

Besides, young people don't have any money nowadays---or so they complain---so it's pointless for a business to stay open just so skint customers can rave. That would be charity, not business.

 

Finally, if young men lack so much game that they can't score a tryst for the night by 2 am, and in Thailand, they ought to learn the art of seduction. Those Millennial Incels are pathetic. (joking....kind of)

Using your logic, then petrol stations and car manufacturers cause a greater number of road accidents….. but the drivers, of course are not to blame

Especially in the Tourist parts of Thailand, where the zoning and licensing for open air karaoke, live "music"LOL or discos and getting- pissed-on-chang- then-rev-up-the-2strokes smack in the middle of a residential area where people have lived and invested money in their houses for 30 years, may be 70 or 80 years old , possibly not all that well , depends only on the brown envelopes or their connections to the local admin. After all they make money, what else is important ? Soooo much fun to hop up and down in bed with the vibration of the incompetently played bass and bass drum while some peepeegirl is screeching disharmony. Ah yes, my apologies, we should grow up to your age (what was that again ?15?16? you egotistical eejit) and enjoy our 2 or 3 hours sleep or simply take the rai plus house , put it on a truck and dump it somewhere civilised .

Fair play, the all-knowing boomers can be annoying 😋. Dunno about later hours but guess it’s nice to have the choice and should probably be certain areas like Bangla in Phuket. If you live there and moan about the extra noise; well, who’s to blame for that?

 

Forget the later hours for a moment and take away the daft purchasing times in the day. This bewilders tourists more than anything.

And thus a major survey flaw.

While fundamental to nationalism is complete national unity in tradition and culture - a uniform society, it doesn't in reality (nor where you have a free democratic society) exist except in the mist extreme fascists countries. This is how the new government labels itself.

The survey should be done at the sub-district level at best and district level at worse to get the representations at the local and most affected people by longer entertainment venues. 

This new government seems to follow the Prayut government in terms of applying government policies to a "one size fits all." Thailand is not a nation of people but a nation of Peoples. And that's why the Move Forward Party won majority in the 2023 election.

Prefer they leave things as they are 0200 hrs closing is good enough
