My guess would be the Bilateral Agreement made between the two countries in 2005 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Russian FM at the time was Sergei Lavrov.

So Thais can visit Russia without a visa, but are currently limited to 30 days unless Russia has also extended the period?

The change for Russians from 30 to 90 days was done because of the winter weather in Russia, we were told.

Some of my Russian friends came to Thailand basically to stay alive. They hate Putin. They say everything you hear from Putin is a lie. One of their fathers whom I've known for decades, hates Putin so much he won't repeat his name (also for fear of his live, too). He also admires America, the West, and even Asia. Seems anything not Putin's Russia is good to him.

Maybe you read to much media.

Thailand is trying to get cheap oil...by giving longer tourist visas...to draft-dodging Russians? 🤔

So, they want to 'help' the draft-dodgers then, giving them longer entries?

Lots of this and that  re Russians  but bottom line if you want more snow bird long stay type tourists to come to thailand and spend $$ perhaps the TAT should consider what a similar offer to many other countries might do to help them meet some of their magic tourists numbers.  Any way u cut it being forced to leave the country after 30 days or so or go spend a day at an immigration office begging for an extension  is a pain in the butt and i suspect lots of people don't want to jump through hoops to spend several months in Thailand.

What harm would it do to at least try it for six months or so?  (and yes i know that the bribes to immigration and payoffs from visa companies might not like their gravy trains stopped)

Its a simple reciprocal agreement; Russia gave Thais the 90 days for Russia.

And of course the lines at the russian embassy for Thais looking to vacation in russia is miles long.

Why would Thailand not want Iranian tourists?  They've been here  for years already.

You mean the ones in the IDC?

And why would there be lines at the Russian embassy if they do not require a visa? (which they don't)

They get 90 days visa-free, apparently, why would there be any lines at the Russian embassy?

Could be reciprocity with visa exemption for Thai people in Russia like some South American countries do with Thailand.

We don't talk much about them but Argentinian and Brazilian citizens have had 90 days exemption for years.

Or it could be the beginning of a bigger visa friendly system towards Nothern countries. (which I hope)

If it is not one of those 2 reasons, I would be quite upset.

Royal Thai Government has approved a unilateral and temporary tourist visa exemption scheme for holders of Russian passports or travel documents, entering the Kingdom of Thailand from 1 November 2023 to 30 April 2024,

Note the word unilateral. Are you privy to some information that 'Sydney consulate' is not?

It wasn't the ordinary Russian tourist that started the war (sorry Vlad, special military operation) against Ukraine was it. Why should they be penalized for the actions of their mischief making president?

As far as I'm concerned the more opportunities that Russian citizens get to be away from their country and the propaganda that is being stuffed down their throats, the better they will understand that they are being duped by Putin and his propaganda machine.

A bit of exposure to unbiased media can only be a good thing. And let's not forget that they're bring money into the country as well.

If other western countries give you the cold shoulder. come here.

I regard this thread as an argument about geopolitics, not assistance on acquiring visas, work permits etc. for Thailand. That is against the intended use of this sub forum, and the thread is
