Thailand – The end of Buddhist Lent this year will be on Sunday, October 29th when alcohol sales will be banned nationwide for 24 hours.

The End of Buddhist Lent also called “Awk Phansa” in Thai falls on the 15th day of the 11th waxing moon. The day marks the end of the rainy season for monks who will end their three-month retreats.

Alcohol sales will be banned for 24 hours nationwide at the end of Buddhist Lent except at duty-free shops at international airports according to the Alcohol Control Act. Anyone who breaks the law will be fined up to 10,000 baht or imprisoned for up to six months or both.

Which category do you fall under, Skipa?

As always these bans demonstrate the Thai bureacratic need to be seen to "do" something. If abstaining from alcohol is the point, then surely banning the consumption of alcohol would be the law. However, they know they can't actually enforce anything, so they ban sales.

Sales but not consumption... there's always a way.

Does it matter... it doesn't change any part of my observation.

You can drink, you just can't buy or sell alcohol.  Stock up in advance.

At night time no problems as the entertainment venues will open till 4 am..

I'm dreading Monday, My wife will have completed her 3mth of no alcohol, so will be pished as a rat by 5pm :burp:, she has just finished 7 days of being a vegetarian too, now she is down in BKK  for a 1 day ceremony.

Ma & Pa shops will be open for business as usual selling alcohol, will even deliver.

Surely it'd be quicker counting the non drinkers amongst us.

Don't know how they tie consumption of alcohol with religion. However it would be better to have a no-scams day instead, I think this would be more in-keeping with religion, although I'm not to sure why?

Not in our village they don't. We have 3 outlets and they all stick to the rules.

As said the MotoGp will be an interesting situation with all the businesses including temporary alcohol outlets setup

when was the last time anyone was fined or jailed for breaking this ridiculous law?
