Angry reactions as foreign couple's car crash leaves injured rider abandoned in Phuket

A video circulating on social media showing a foreign couple neglecting a motorcyclist they hit with their luxurious car in Phuket, Thailand, has led to public outrage. The incident occurred on April 25, when the couple, driving a white Mercedes Benz, made a right turn without signaling, causing a collision with an oncoming motorcyclist.

 

The impact threw the motorcyclist across the car, and he later fell on the road. Thankfully, he was wearing a helmet, which likely saved him from a serious head injury. Instead of checking on him, the foreign couple focused on inspecting their car's damage, seemingly disregarding the injured individual.

 

The vicinity of the accident is believed to be around a Vivi Hotel in the Rawai district of Phuket, according to a Thai social media user. The couple are suspected to have been hotel guests there.

 

The video generated significant responses from Thai social media users after being posted, which resulted in over 3,900 reactions and 500 comments. Many users expressed their resentment towards the couple's behavior.

 

The news coverage does not provide further updates about whether the couple helped the injured motorcycle rider or if they are facing charges for their actions.

The video does not match the written reporting by AseanNow. The victim was not left abandoned, there was a person helping them. The video also stops a second after the couple existing the vehicle and doesn't show what happened after.

Another careless or reckless  biker ?

 

Another idiotic farang couple thinking no end of themselves and thinking they can dodge and manage in the reckless and chaotic Thai roads with some fancy car, perhaps rented to show for a week ? Hard to say.

 

Nobody can really tell for either side.

 

Hope the bike fellow recovers fast.

 

p.s. always have a dashcam in Thailand and even better, always be ready to film when dealing with any administratif person behind à counter should it be a bank, immigration or whatever. There seems to be lot of social anger against all farangs who come over, with some social media exhibitionnists loving to flashing their fancy hires cars, money and clothes.

Thai drivers very often cut in front of me on the roads, exactly like this Benz did, most likely hoping that I will notice them and brake before I hit them.

A few comments above suggest biker’s fault. Seriously? Bike is going straight, car is turning right. Speed is irrelevant. The car must wait until it is safe to turn.

The driver of this car shows incredible behaviour. 

He almost killed a person, but the first thing he does is checking the car. Shame on him.

Even if the bike driver would have been speeding, then the car driver should have anticipated this situation.

Unbelievable that some persons here suggest that the motorbike driver made a mistake.

Those of you that are automatically blaming the rider should be ashamed of yourselves it doesn't matter who is at fault,, look at the man getting out of the Mercedes did he walk over to check the rider??? No way not a chance he was more worried about the car,, didn't give a crap about another human being. 

Who has a Mercedes and stays at Vivi resort its a cheap place I'm willing to bet the car driver is Russian and arrogant POS let's all see. I hope they are arrested soon.

it happens often here. in bkk a few years back it started to rain really hard a few hundred meters from my destination. as i was getting to a turn i tried to start turning before i was slow enough to. was only going about 10 or 15. due to heavy rain and too fast into the turn the bike went down and me with it. ended up about a half foot from a black benz. the driver put the power window down looked out at his car to make sure i didn't hit him. he then put the window up without saying a single word to me and drove off.

The car did not indicate that it was turning even if it was obvious what his intentions were, it must give right of way to oncoming traffic.

 

The car was turning into a side road from a main road without indicators. It's in the rule book, never anticipate another driver's actions.

 

The motorcyclist had the right of way as he was on the main road, even though he was speeding and going too fast to avoid a collision.

 

There was no sign of compassion from the car driver and passenger on exiting their vehicle, as they were heading straight to the front of their car to survey the damage.

..agreed!..the driver casually exited the car, not looking at the injured rider seated..instead of normally stepping straight from the car, notice how he turned to his right facing his own car as he shut the door, totally ignoring the rider, then casually walked to inspect the front of his car...shame on you driver for not rendering assistance first!

PS. I can't see any right hand indicator flashing although it maybe the new LED strip type. Regardless the motor cy entered the frame very late after the car had almost completed the turn and as mentioned could easily have avoided the car if travelling slower and paying more attention.

A few years ago I was in Chiang Mai. I was riding my bicycle in town. I was in a lane to go straight, behind other cars doing the same thing. A pickup  came from the far right turn lane, after his lane had

already diverged from the other lanes, deciding to go straight instead of turning. The rear quarter panel of the truck hit me, and down I went. I was laying in the road, lots of traffic. The driver got out,

inspected his truck, looked at me and got back in his truck and left. I have a good cut on my arm, and bent bike.

Not one person stopped. Typical behavior, foreign and domestic. But, you never read about the domestic people doing it.

looks to me as the motorcyclist fault>>as the car was well into his turn< ( cant tell if turn single was on)
BUT they obviously cared more about the car than him<

I agree with you and it's almost as though the reporters ' get off ' on the fact it is a foreign driver. Xenophobia is well and truly at work here.

 

We see daily Thais fleeing the scene of fatal accidents and that includes bus drivers, who have been under the influence of drink or drugs. A great deal of them drive unroadworthy vehicles and are uninsured.

 

Those incidents are not newsworthy but put a foreigner into the mix, and the "outrage by netizens" is just for good measure.

 

Plenty of them need to focus on obtaining the necessary driving skills and competency tests before taking to the roads, instead of playing ' Let's blame foreigners for all our woes '

The sedan driver might have been using his smartphone while driving and did not notice the motosai?
