No, I am not condoning underage sex (I have specifically posted that I do not condone it), I am answering the OP's question - the legal age for giving consent for sex in Thailand is 15, it is not 18 and any age difference has no relevance to the legal answer to the question asked, the legal age is still 15. 

 

You may not approve of Thailand's law on the subject but your opinion does not affect the answer.  If you believe that the age of consent for sex is 18 in Thailand, please produce some evidence to back your claim.

I would say at 18 he has no worries, if we get involved with the 15 being the legal age, it can be a can of worms and I believe the girls parents can cry ' foul ' between the ages of 15–18 years old and make serious problems.

I don't think anyone is actually suggesting they might be interested in anyone under 18. It seems that the OP wanted to know if his friend would be alright legally with an 18 year old, but chose to word it as a question about what the age of consent is.

But, as alluded to by @OneMoreFarang on page 1, between 15 and 18 there's a law that allows the parent's or the individuals, to pursue charges, regardless of consent given.

 

"In Thailand, sexual encounters with a minor under the age of 18 may be classed as a compoundable offence, even if this was with a person over 15 and with their explicit consent.

And @spidermike007 and @impulse added the risk of persecution in home country.  In my country,  that's a very real risk.

 

And for LiverpoolLou: the term "age of consent" is not defined in Thai law, its not a legal term. It's just an expression that English websites use, and they construct it from Thai laws by comparing them to arbitrarily selected Anglosaxon laws.

They could just as well write "the legal age in Thailand is 18", it would also be only 50% true. But it would at least be what every Thai I know thinks.

One could make an argument that anybody who is in a position to find a good woman, who is 10, 20, or 25 years younger than himself would go for it gladly, and joyously. And that the poor guys who are stuck with a woman their own age are the ones that are having to endure a far more difficult life, with infinitely less inspiration. It's all just a point of view, and very subjective. 

 

I prefer much younger. Had women my age back in the US. Did not like it, nor do I find older women appealing or attractive. I love like a centi millionaire here. Nearly all of my friends are envious.

The problem with your posts is that they all totally ignore the OP's point in asking in the first place. 

 

He wanted to know if 18 is ok. It's a real world question asking what would happen in the real world. 

 

You then go on to advise him that 15 is ok as that is Thai law. Yes, I was well aware of the law you are going on about more than 30 years ago when I first came to Thailand and in those days you could get away with it but my point is, and in actually trying to help the OP get his answer, is that 18 and you are 99.9999% safe, anything under and it’s big problem time if anyone in authority decides it is no matter what Liverpool Lou says.

 

By following the “Thai law” you keep quoting all you are doing is giving some people the impression that banging a 15 year old in Thailand will be perfectly fine and no legal problems will come their way because of it. 

 

Presumably you would admit that judges in Thai courts have a rather better understanding of Thai law than you or me. Are you then saying saying that a farang caught in the act of banging a 15 year old would not only face no legal consequences for his actions but if for some weird reason he did end up before a Thai judge in a court of law the judge would merely say something like “No case to answer. 15 is the age of consent.”

 

Is that what you are saying? 

 

Please, don’t bang on again about “That is what the law says”. Any of us with legal experience are more than aware that things are never as obvious as they seem with very old laws as modern ones have come along, despite the old ones maybe still being in place, which pretty much make the old ones irrelevant, especially in a place like Thailand.

It's a different age in a "prostitution establishment", e g if you pay for sex. 15-18 yo is the confusion.

 

Section 8: Anyone who has sexual intercourse with or acts otherwise against a person over the age of 15 but under 18 in a prostitution establishment, with or without their consent, will be imprisoned for up to 3 years and fined between 20,000 to 60,000 THB.
