I have a question that needs farang comments. 

The gold card or 30 baht health system. 

 

My friends girl is saying that she has to pay 350 baht to get on the scheme and 30 baht for each visit afterwards. 

 

I'm pretty sure the scheme is free. 

Just show the thai ID card. 

 

I know it's only 350 baht.

But pretty sure she's giving him a tug.

She just had hospital dental care and it was 1600 each root canal. 

So she says. 

(Farang pays)

 

I recently read that dental health is now included in the health care.

There is no 350 baht charge to initially join the scheme.

 

But you do indeed pay 30 baht for each hospital visit to a govt hospital.

 

As for dental cover, that would need to be clarified at the point of a dental visit

 

The monthly  circa 430 baht scheme per month for working people, covers all medical bills in a govt hospital, but is limited to 900 baht per year.

 

So, it would be difficult to imagine that the 30 baht scheme has much if any, dental cover.

 

But I stand to be corrected on the final paragraph.

 

If your friend thinks that the 1600 baht each root canal, is disingenuous, all he has to do is check the bill that he paid for.

I do not know exact details but dental cover under the 30 haht scheme is quite limited.

 

As poster above noted, there is no fee to "join" the scheme. Actually any Thai citizen not covered under either of the 2 SS systems is automatically covered under the scheme.

 

There is a small fee (usually 50 baht) the very first time one registers at a hospital to get a patient number etc, not sure if the 30 baht scheme covers that or not, but it is only 50 baht. 

 

Root canals usually cost much more than 1,600 baht  even if that was per treatment (not pre root canal...a single root canal can entails 2 - 5 separate sessions).  So certainly not excessive.

 

The larger issue is if your friend is happy with a relationship in which he is expected to (and can afford to) financially support his GF (pretty much the norm here for farang-thai pairings). That's for him to decide.

even for social security (Thai with jobs) the dental cover is limited, approved treatments are: cleaning, tooth filling, tooth extraction, and wisdom tooth extraction/surgery and limited to 900.-baht per year

 

I'd think for the universal /30 baht scheme it'd be a lot less

The types of services that can be sought include free over-the-counter drugs for 16 basic ailments at contracted pharmacies; 32 basic medical treatments at contracted medical clinics such as wound dressing and prescribed injections; and 22 types of prescribed laboratory tests.

It also covers physical rehabilitation services as prescribed by a doctor, basic dental care services, medical examinations and associated treatments that do not require hospital admission, and Thai traditional medical therapies such as massage and herbal steam.

please explain this... the way you wrote is as if i pay 430 bht per month but am only covered 900. this makes no sense. i have 'pagan sangkom'  e.g. social security and it has paid hundreds of thousands so far. and it costs around 430 bht per month

 

kidney surgery

knee replacement both legs

cataract surgeries

and the list goes on

 

so, i think something is missing in your post... unless what you are trying to say is that 'dental coverage' is limited to 900...?

My apologies.  You are absolutely  correct.   We'll spotted.

Next day the child was back and another one.

Maybe she genuinely misunderstood that she has to pay 350 baht for initial registration.   You can pass on my comments, that it is not needed.

 

As for the dental expenses, I cannot comment.  But I would find it unusual to have root canal work in a child's milk teeth.

 

He needs to ask the dentists why that procedure, if it was indeed carried out, was necessary.  Milk teeth are what they are, and normally fall out and replaced naturally.

Unless there was some gum disease,which needed some other intervention.

 

But I am not a qualified dental surgeon.  So, I may be commenting out of place.

I can't but help thinking that he probably received a good dose of extraction of the wallet. 

I mean, why do a root canal on milk teeth?

Why wasn't the total extent of dental care picked up on the first visit.?

And then the 350 request for a gold card.(no longer required).

Perhaps, you could take your friend aside and have a quiet word with him.   You obviously think his kindness or naivete, is being abused.

 

It would be unfair of me to pass judgement on this person, and I have my own private thoughts on what I would do.

Well, they don't like confrontation or being challenged,  especially when they have been caught out.

 

I don't know how long they have been together, nor how strong their relationship is.

But notwithstanding that, there needs to be some serious discussions.  

 

And if I was challenged in that manner, and the relationship was in the early stages,  I know that it would be a simple thing to move on alone.

I think he has realised that perhaps his contributions have been for several questionable items.

Not just these, but other occasions as well.

Gold card was cancelled a few years ago. 

Just show id card now.

50bht charge is the standard doctor's fee for anyone not registered at that government hospital.

 

They don't care what colour your skin is.

I can confirm it is not normal practice to do a root canal on milk teeth. If necessary they would do simple extraction.

 

Yes, he will have to sort it out. She is not going to remain with him without financial support  in exchange (neither would >90% of other potential Thai GFs) , but they could work out a more honest and transparent arrangement.
