Peterphuket Posted July 4, 2024 Posted July 4, 2024 It is what I mentioned yesterday and many times before, there is no competitor, the entire Thai market is run by three or four stone-rich individuals in Thailand. They call the shots, and they make the prices 1 1

It's not rocket science. Sure but that's taking the p@@@ You can pick up a can for less than £1 in the UK, even if you double the price to add freight/duties and double again for profit, it's going to be nearer £4 / 180 baht. Years ago, I saw the same thing with Haagen Daz where a tub cost £18!!

More dried fruit and nuts than any of the others.
Bangkok Barry Posted July 4, 2024 Posted July 4, 2024 I like to have grilled fish from the market, sometimes with sweet and sour, and it costs 150-200 baht. I also like to have various imported food, and nothing I buy from my supplier here costs more than 150. So we have a situation where food from a Thai street market can cost more than food imported from the UK or Australia. How did that happen?

Dr. Zorg Posted July 4, 2024 Posted July 4, 2024 Like everything else the prices of goods and services are relative. We don't eat imported canned goods as a rule because it is expensive. Transport is very expensive in europe for example a bus trip of 10 Euro may seem like a pittance in Europe is 397 Thai baht! So what you lose on the swing you will make up on the roundabouts. 1

Same in Australia. The 2 major supermarket chains (Coles and Woolworths, and others) have a big variety of their own brand products. All are good quality, many are production overruns of major brand names. Best ever example I found : I litre Woolworths home brand clothes washing liquid detergent AU$2-. Big brand names AU$13 to AU$17 for 1 litre plastic bottle. Home brand works well, good fabric softener added, clothes have good fresh smell no need to use extra liquid to get clean clothes.
