A horrific stabbing spree in Southport, Merseyside, this morning has left one child dead and at least seven others, including children, critically injured. The attack took place at a Taylor Swift-themed workshop just before noon.

Armed police quickly responded, detaining a man and seizing a knife. Mersey Police have urged the public to avoid the area around Hart Street but assured that there is "no wider threat" to the community. According to the Liverpool Echo, the attack resulted in the death of one child. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed her deep concern over the incident.

Colin Parry, owner of Masters Vehicle Body Repairs on Hart Street, described the scene as a "horror movie," noting that six or seven young girls had been stabbed. He recalled the distress of mothers arriving at the scene, stating, "The mothers are coming here now and screaming. It is like a scene from a horror movie. Police have got him. It's like something from America, not like sunny Southport."

A staff member at The Bridge Cafe on Hart Street told MailOnline about the chaos, saying, "We were told somebody's been stabbing children. It's chocka. It's all cordoned off, police cars at every junction. Parents are stood outside waiting." A local parent mentioned that his daughter, who was at the workshop, was traumatized but safe after running away.

Emergency services, including the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS), responded promptly with 13 ambulances, specialized resources, and air support. NWAS reported that eight patients with stab injuries were taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Aintree University Hospital, and Southport and Formby Hospital.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper conveyed her concerns and support, saying, "I am deeply concerned at the very serious incident in Southport. All my thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected. I have spoken to the Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner to convey full support to the police and thanks to the emergency services responding."

Merseyside's Police & Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell also expressed shock and urged the public to avoid speculation online. She stated, "I am deeply shocked and concerned about the major incident in Southport this morning. An arrest has been made. I would urge people to be careful about what they share online and not to speculate about this incident."

Merseyside Police confirmed their ongoing efforts to handle the situation, saying, "We can confirm that emergency services are in Southport following a major incident this morning, Monday, July 29. At around 11.50 am, we were called to a property on Hart Street to reports of a stabbing. There are a number of reported casualties, and more details will be confirmed when possible. Armed police have detained a male and seized a knife. He has been taken to a police station. Please avoid the area while we deal with this incident. There is no wider threat to the public."

The North West Ambulance Service added, "We're attending a major incident on Hart Street, Southport following reports of multiple stabbings in which we have dispatched multiple resources. We're assessing the situation and working with emergency partners."

Alder Hey Children's Hospital has declared a "major incident," urging parents to only bring their children to the Emergency Department if it is urgent, while maintaining that all other appointments and services are running as normal.

Southport MP Patrick Hurley expressed his deep concern on social media, stating, "I am deeply concerned by the reports coming from Merseyside Police about a major incident on Hart Street in Southport today. I am hoping for the best possible outcomes to the casualties affected. My thoughts go out to all those affected, their loved ones, and to the entire community. The police have confirmed that an individual involved in the attack has now been detained. I am repeating the advice of the police to avoid the area whilst the police and ambulance teams support this incident."

Southport Football Club has offered its facilities as an emergency response center if needed, stating, "We are in ongoing dialogue with Merseyside Police and have offered full use of the club's facilities as an emergency response center if required. The thoughts of all at the club are with those affected by today's events."

This is a breaking news story, and further details will be provided as they become available.

Terrible, the police have just released news on TV that two young girls have died.

Several others are critical. Police not treating this as terror-related.

So young, so sad. Sleep peacefully you angels.

Social media reports suggesting the name... Ali Al-Shakati...  (who is officially being reported as a 'boy from Cardiff)

On an MI6 watchlist, was known to Liverpool mental health services, came to the UK by boat as an asylum seeker last year...

A 17 year old who apparently looks closer to 34 (according to the taxi driver witness)...

True or not... ??...   nothing is official yet - I'm not sure if that considered pedalling such nonsense or having a discussion on social media...

... Would the Police or authorities release the official name if doing so is potentially so incendiary ?

Update: Third girl dies after Southport dance class stabbing, say police

A nine-year-old girl has become the third child to die after the Southport stabbings, Merseyside Police say.

More now from Merseyside Police, who say the two victims who died in the attack yesterday were girls aged six and seven. As we've just reported, a third girl, aged nine, died from her injuries in the early hours of this morning.

This is the first time police have confirmed the victims' genders. Until this point, we knew only that they were children.

Eight other children were stabbed in the attack, police say. Five of the children and two adults remain in a critical condition.

Suspect was born in Cardiff to Rwandan parents

The the 17-year-old currently being questioned by the police in connection with the attack in Southport was born in Cardiff and moved to the Southport area in 2013. His parents are from Rwanda and he has an older brother who was also born in Cardiff. Merseyside Police also say a name being shared on social media in connection with the suspect is incorrect.

Almost immediately after the deadly stabbing attack in Southport, baseless rumours began spreading online.

While police and emergency services were still responding to the attack, a widely shared LinkedIn post claimed without evidence that "a migrant" was responsible.

But the most viral source of rumours so far has been a report published on an obscure US-based website which claims to cover "breaking news". The report falsely claims that that the 17-year old suspect is an "asylum seeker" named "Ali Al-Shakati", who "arrived in the UK by boat last year".

Merseyside Police has confirmed that the suspect was born in Cardiff, and has yet to identify the 17-year-old.

The report also adds that the suspect was "on the MI6 watch list", despite the fact that it is MI5, not MI6, that deals with domestic counter-terrorism cases.

The name "Ali Al-Shakati" has since been widely shared online in posts viewed by millions. Some other outlets, including Russia's RT news channel, have also reported this name, citing the US-based website. Other variations of the report, including the claim that the suspect was a "Channel migrant", have also been widely circulated.

is it really appropiate to put one of your childish emoji's on a topic such as this ?

Oh, seems an update on the scrote......

As long as they can pass him off as under 18 they can effectively keep all details secret.  They think we are fools and will tell us whatever they want us to hear, with scant regard for the truth.   They will be busy now, what with  refurbishing a nice new flat for him, getting him a mobile phone , flat screen TV and playstation, sorting out his benefits, arranging the various support plans he needs, and most importantly,    building his fully funded legal team, Of course once all  that has been sorted there will be countless appeals to attend to. This will drag on for years and will cost us millions.for some it will be a licence to print money   What a mess

Since the attacker is 17 that means no-one will know his name (officially) until after he has been found guilty and convicted by the courts.  Only then can he be named by the Judge, and that is only if the judge decides to do so.   Since we won't know his name, we won't know the parents names either, or what religion they are inclined to follow, or even if he really was born in Cardiff.   So the narrative is whatever they want it to be.

Allegedly 17,   just about the only detail they have released, and its probably a lie.    We now know the full names of the three dead kids, but are kept in the dark regarding the attacker  why would that be?

The official reports stressing "BORN IN CARDIFF" are just as nauseating as the reports saying he arrived in a rubber boat.

He's a sick loser and his parents should be shipped back to Rwanda as soon as their pathetic son is locked up for life.

Do they fear that the good people of Southport might start throwing stones , burning police cars, assaulting officers. breaking noses  and rioting in the streets shouting  "ally akbar" Personally I think that's very  unlikely

The fact  that 3 kids have been killed by a violent knife wielding stranger from elsewhere. is pretty incendiary in it's self    The advice to avoid jumping to conclusions etc etc would never have been issued if the perp was a neo nazi or a skinhead.  No amount of political posturing and hollow platitudes can disguise what has happened

in the context that he used it, the answer is yes.  It would not be the first time a kid killer saw his living conditions and life opportunities improve exponentially as a result of what they did
