Harris Confronts Trump’s Remarks on Her Identity with Calls for Unity and Respect

Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a pointed response to former President Donald J. Trump after he questioned her identity as a Black woman. Speaking at a convention of Sigma Gamma Rho, a leading Black sorority, Harris criticized Trump's divisive rhetoric, emphasizing the need for truthfulness and respect in leadership. Harris stated that the American people deserve better, a leader who does not react with hostility and anger when faced with the facts and who understands that diversity is a source of strength rather than division.

Harris’s comments came after Trump’s remarks in Chicago, where he questioned whether Harris identified as Indian or Black and falsely claimed she had shifted her identity from Indian to Black. Harris, who is of Jamaican and Indian heritage and a graduate of Howard University, chose not to address Trump’s comments directly. Instead, she focused on the broader theme of unity and the importance of integrity in leadership.

Harris's measured response to Trump’s remarks may indicate her approach to future attacks. This strategy contrasts with how former President Barack Obama dealt with similar unfounded accusations from Trump. Obama largely ignored the "birther" conspiracy theories, while Harris is addressing the underlying issues of respect and truthfulness. Harris has placed her campaign within the larger context of racial progress in America, likening her efforts to those of abolitionists and civil rights activists. During a rally in Atlanta, she reminded the audience that previous generations had fought for freedom and that the current generation now holds the baton.

Harris’s involvement in Alpha Kappa Alpha, another prominent Black sorority, alongside Sigma Gamma Rho, has garnered significant support from these organizations. Her position as the vice-presidential candidate on the Democratic ticket has energized many within the party, particularly African Americans, at a time when Trump has been making inroads among Black voters. Trump’s comments at a convention of Black journalists in Chicago seemed aimed at creating a rift among these voters.

Asha’ Jones, a member of Sigma Gamma Rho, expressed her disdain for Trump’s attacks on Harris, asserting that Harris does not need to prove her Blackness to anyone as she knows who she is. Many attendees at the convention, dressed in the sorority’s traditional gold jackets, resonated with the words of former First Lady Michelle Obama: “When they go low, we go high.” Harris seemed to echo this sentiment in her speech’s conclusion, urging people to continue fighting with faith, optimism, and hope.

He completely blew it. Again. This man is his own worst promoter. He should stop talking. Nearly everything he says is nonsense, pure fabrication, or outright lies. Not sure what he thought he would gain by this appearance, as he does not do well with audiences that do not displaying total fealty to their Master.

He was shredded by the interviewers. His lies were dismantled. Questioning Harris being black was just dumb and dumber, and things like this consistently demonstrate his lack of intelligence, or ability to read a room. Harris has always identified as mixed race, and went to an all black university, Howard.

Between his own repitition of the same lies daily, and his pick of Just Dull Vance, his campaign seems to be losing both momentum and the plot. Hoping he goes down in flames.

Strange that Harris didn't mention honesty.

For example honesty about the fact she is mostly of Indian heritage.

If she thinks that black people cannot see the fact she is playing them then she is in for a big shock.

Who is KH anyway?  The most Liberal in the senate when she was a Senator or the in the middle now on her remarks until she may secure the position she is being raised to.  Not even being elected. She is trying to remake herself.  The media is trying to remake her.  Every despot leader in the world wants her as our leader.   Why would this be, do you think?  Any depot that wants is proof she is the wrong pick.  Don't you agree.

Maybe because she was allegedly raised mostly by her Indian mother.

Obama WAS raised by his white mother, but it didn't stop him identifying as black, at least politically.

Yes, it's odd ........ they profess to want a black president but don't offer up any black candidates.

What? You mean politicians have speechwriters that write their speeches? NO WAY! This is groundbreaking news! Have you shared this breaking story with the Associated Press? Luckily DJT doesn't do that!

So you're saying that when she speaks extemporaneously, she'll flop like a fish out of water? But what if she's in an electric-powered boat, for example? Remember this string of pearls of wisdom?

"The problem is the boat is so heavy it can’t float. Also, it can’t go fast because of the weight. So I said, ‘Let me ask you a question, and [the guy who makes boats in South Carolina] said, ‘Nobody ever asked this question,’ and it must be because of MIT, my relationship to MIT —very smart. He goes, I say, ‘What would happen if the boat sank from its weight? And you’re in the boat and you have this tremendously powerful battery and the battery is now underwater and there’s a shark that’s approximately 10 yards over there?’"

You are probably correct in that she would never be able to on the fly concoct an allegory of such brilliance and depth, illustrating her understanding of complex technical matters and the risks that one typically faces while underwater boating with electric engines in shark-infested waters, a typical situation for people on the East Coast. She also wouldn't pretend to have had this conversation that hopefully never occurred. I say hopefully because if that word salad represents the "thinking" of DJT, he's pretty far along the road to Reagan's dementia.

Given that you're so confident that DJT would absolutely destroy Kamala in a one-on-one debate, can you explain why he's already backed out of the September debate he had committed to? Don't try to tell me the ol' "wait until she's the actual nominee" because he already debated with the presumptive nominee before the Democratic Convention. What's changed?

Try telling a white supremicist that Obama or Harris aren’t black.

The whole anger is because she’s not white, not male and owning the political limelight right now.

Black, Indian, or Black Indian - it really shouldn't have any relevance whatsoever.

Yes, that's a great line of thinking and I would encourage this!

I mean, nobody would really conclude that the Right are actually completely racist. To the point of breaking down the ethnicity of the father to "prove" that she's more Indian than she is Black. Because, you know, that's what REALLY matters in your candidate. And as everyone knows, the Black folks in America are racially pure Africans who pride themselves on that.

This is the problem with being fundamentally racist. You actually believe that Black people are so simple that you can win their votes by talking to them as if they were children.

Love that Harris is following the Michelle Obama playbook - when they go low, we go high! The enthusiasm is building very quickly and the negativity of the GOP is already biting them in the buttocks. But they have no way of moving towards the Center because that would require compromise with the Far Right base, and so they're doing the only thing they know how to do - fling poop. Harris very deliberately and specifically decided to protect her flanks before moving her forces forward in the Center. You know, just like how selecting an abortion zealot like JD Vance has protected their Base, while they attack on one side of the battlefield and abandon the Center.

Here's what Trump said

Donald Trump’s Pants on Fire claim at NABJ about how Kamala Harris ‘became’ Black

"She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black. So, I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?" Trump said July 31.

https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2024/jul/31/donald-trump/donald-trumps-pants-on-fire-claim-at-nabj-about-ho/

His claim is clearly false.

One Indian to another ... :cheesy:

"Ramaswamy recalled that Kamala Harris leaned onto her Indian American identity when she ran for office in California and added that she wears a different identity when it is politically convenient on a national stage."

""She leaned into it when she ran for office in California, big Asian American and Indian American population. So, she wore that when it was convenient. She's wearing a different identity now when it's politically convenient on a national stage," he added."

She has the entirety of the Obama Chicago Democrat Machine behind her now.  She doesn't have to think, all she needs to do is to remember the script she is given to her.  Lies and all.

Well, if Vivek Ramaswamy says so...

It's clear that what he's saying is transparently ridiculous. He claimed that she leaned heavily on her Indian identity because of the "big Asian American and Indian American population". Apart from the fact that Indians are also Asians, who is so foolish to believe that people from Asia feel some sort of community with others from Asia? Do Kazakhs feel some sort of community with Thais?

California's Indian American community is about 2.1% of the total population. She won by a landslide.

Here's a clue because you could use some. The reason you can only see her race, and are so fascinated that you are busily breaking it down into sub-categories by percentage, is that you are racist. Just like a hammer can only see nails, you can't get past her background, appearance and gender to the place where you can begin to discuss her qualifications for the presidency. You'll note that we don't attack Donald because he's a White man, we attack him based on what he says and what he does. We don't break down his Caucasian-ness by how much is German or Irish because it's not important at all, just like whether Kamala is "more" Indian or African-American is utterly irrelevant. We don't think he is a Fascist because he has a German grandfather, but because he embraces fascists and supports fascist policies.

The reason she was chosen is right before you and will continue right up until she is the first to be referred to as "Madam President" - she's smart, tough and has appropriate qualifications and background to be President as a former prosecutor and successful politician. The diversity you so despise reflects the population that you wish to have vote for your candidate, so keep on flinging that poop! You're just alienating the people you need to win the election.

Now can you please provide an explanation about why Donald is so afraid to debate this supposedly DEI-based incompetent hire?

I don't care who wins the election.

And I refuse to vote in any election unless they provide a 'no suitable candidate' box for me to tick and for them to count.

As for Donald Trump, not a suitable candidate IMHO same as Ms. Harris.
