5 Tips to get discounts when buying car insurance in Thailand

For foreigners living in Thailand and looking for comprehensive car insurance that provides full coverage at an affordable price, there are many options to get discounts on car insurance premiums and you might not have known about that before. Some conditions can be used yearly to reduce your car insurance premiums. If you are interested, let’s follow along and understand more details.

How many types of car insurance discounts are there?

How do you buy car insurance to get the best price for insurance premiums? Here are 5 types of car insurance discounts that most motor insurance companies in Thailand will consider. Let’s get to know all 5 discounts as follows:

1. No Claim Bonus (NCB)

A No Claim Bonus (NCB) is a discount for cars that have never reported an insurance claim for car repairs or been notified to change parts and never claimed any damages throughout the policy period. This discount also applies if you are not at fault in car collisions. Motor insurance companies offer a “No Claim Bonus” (NCB) as a reward for the insured who didn’t make any insurance claims in the previous year of the insurance policy.
The discount applied will be as follows:

  • 20% discount on insurance premium renewal for 1 claim-free year
  • 30% discount on insurance premium renewal for 2 claim-free years
  • 40% discount on insurance premium renewal for 3 claim-free years
  • 50% discount on insurance premium renewal for 4 claim-free years

2. Named driver discount

This type of discount is suitable for a car used by a family. The discount calculates the risk of driving based on the driver’s age. Motor insurance companies usually consider the driver’s experience. Careful driving according to age will result in lower car insurance prices. You can specify up to 4 named drivers for general car insurance and up to 5 named drivers for electric car insurance. A vehicle only driven by specific drivers, gives the insurance company more data points to calculate risk, compared to a car insurance policy covering any driver.

3. Group insurance discount

This discount is applicable if you apply for motor insurance for 3 or more cars at the same time. If they are rental cars (under a hire-purchase contract) between the buyer and the car sales company, with financial institutions acting as intermediaries, there must be a renter who will receive a 10% discount on the insurance premium for each vehicle. If you do not notify or renew car insurance for 3 cars at the same time, you will receive a discount only for the 3rd and subsequent cars. Moreover, if it is your own car, your spouse’s, your father’s, your mother’s, your child’s, or a blood sibling’s, the company may give a discount of up to 10%.

4. Dashcam discount

If you have a dash camera for your car. You can get a maximum discount of 5-10% of the net insurance premium. According to the announcement of the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC), each company has different details and conditions for requesting the discount. For Roojai you can get a dashcam discount of up to 10% and get a free car insurance quote for your affordable, reliable voluntary car insurance in Thailand.

Dashcam discounts can be used with all types of voluntary car insurance at Roojai. There are no specified specifications such as the brand or model of the car camera in any way.

5. Special discounts and add-on services from an insurance broker

Another way to find valuable “discounts” is through brokers. They can provide comprehensive car insurance in the market. You can easily compare motor insurance online from leading insurance brokers and get your quote showing the discount in a few minutes, including the total insurance premiums, immediately. This kind of discount is special and depends on the insurance broker. The more competition there is, the higher the discount you will receive for your car insurance policy. Therefore, finding a discount from the insurance broker is an option you can’t overlook. Here are some examples:

  • First-time customer discount at a new brokerage, given to cars that had been insured with other motor insurance companies or brokers before. Even if you have a claim history, it’s not a big deal.
  • Commission discounts that the broker will receive from the insurance company if they successfully find new customers. This allows you to receive a discount and cheaper premiums than buying directly from the insurance company.
  • Various special privileges or e-voucher rewards, such as shopping codes, gas e-vouchers, and others, with values ranging from hundreds to thousands of baht. In addition, if you buy other insurance as well, you may also negotiate for additional discounts.

There are many discount options for car insurance. These will help you adjust your financial plan and save money from unexpected situations. The line they used for me was my premium went up exactly the amount as the discount, each year. I asked why? They said because the parts cost more every year so they had to boost my premium, even though I made no claims.

The original post could have been lifted from a typical UK insurer, but most Thai insurers do not provide these, just the dashcam discount. Pretty rubbish original post.

I have had no problems with my insurance with Roojai when I had to make a claim they were much better than any car insurers in the Uk.

I have used Roojai for years.

I have never seen them give me a no claims discount.  I have never had a claim on any of my multiple vehicles for many years.

The named driver discount risks them immediately saying they don't want to cover a car. We had to go elsewhere for my daughter.

I would like to see some kind of loyalty back from Roojai.  I have a new BYD Seal Performance, Roojai won't cover it despite the fact I've had zero claims with them for many years and on all my new cars with a free first year insurance.

I think they also stop covering for 70+ year olds.

Please. let's have some loyalty back to your loyal customers.

No, I am 72 and have just signed a new insurance contract with Roojai:coffee1:

Ok, so this is an old thread, but I've just seen it and its still relevant.

Did Roojai reject the cover because the car is an EV and there is a greater interpreted risk of a higher payout if involved in a small bump and damaging the battery ????  something similar ?

It could also be argued that many EV's have better driver aids and are thus less likely to be involved in an incident - but thats quite subjective.
