Srettha had an opportunity to reset tourism. Previous administrations have talked about cleaning up tourism and attracting a better class.

But nope - he falls back to cheap mass tourism. Just pack them in, forget the enviromental impact, just pack them in like sardines.

Funny, we as visitors to this country knew exactly that this would happen, first with the cheap Chinese goods flooding the local markets, and now hordes pouring into this country.  Next will most likely be like the Greeks, local island tourist spot over run with tourists and local Greeks calling for a cap on number of tourists!  There was one note today that indicates that their future target number is 80 million tourists a year!  what a joke and just what are these people thinking?

Insanity. The infrustruture can barely cope with 40 million.

Lunacy.

Their logic is that despite revenue being down, if they increase the numbers then revenue will catch up.

But what about the impact on local communities, infrustructure, the ecological disaster, etc

Yeah, I think that the infrastructure might be able to cope with 40 million visitors but I do also believe that it also will depend on where the visitors are coming from as that will definitely impact certain areas more so than other areas.  Already BKK seems to be inundated with a lot of Chinese but are they spending?  Just wondering.

The previous plan of attracting high spending (quality) tourists was and is the way forward for Thailand if it is serious about being a leading tourist destination whilst maintaining a balance in society, given the current infrastructure hoards of cheap charlies will overload the already stressed infrastructure and slowly drag the standards down to a level where high quality tourists will look elsewhere for spending their $$.

I have said it before, you sleep with dogs you get fleas!!!

The recent actions of the Thai legal system dissolving the MFP is another huge spike in the Coffin, sadly the current administration doesnt see it being their downfall.

Yeah, but none of them wanted to come here (can't say I blame them) so they're stuck with 3rd world tourists.

At one of our get-togethers, my spouse and I asked them why they wanted to live in Thailand and they said one of  the main reasons was their children.  They felt they would get a better education at a private school here, and they wanted them to grow up here rather than in China.

Koreans say exactly the same.

Imagine how bad their schools must be!

I also hear they left behind the massive amount of unfinished buildings and construction in places like Sihanoukville, when their local economy collapsed back home in China and gbling laws changed in Cambodia. Is there a lesson to be learned here? They left behind a horrendous blight. They create alot of problems with their insatiable greed.

Tens of thousands of Chinese citizens who moved to Cambodia to work in the gambling and hospitality industry have left the coastal city, leaving the economy in limbo and hundreds of high-rises unfinished across the city.

In July, provincial authorities met with representatives of local investors and landlords who have leased to Chinese investment projects to discuss the crisis.

According to Sihanoukville provincial authority, more than 1,000 buildings in Sihanoukville have been abandoned for more than two years.

https://cambojanews.com/sihanoukville-property-owners-in-limbo-as-unfinished-high-rises-litter-the-city/

If you want perspective on the thorough devastation of Sihanoukville, watch this fresh video by an Aussie couple, who have lived in Cambodia for years and live in Siem Reap currently but visited S'ville recently.

Roads and streets are full of potholes and broken asphalt. Blocks of Chinese-only businesses and eateries only have signs in Chinese, none in Khmer or English. Dozens of building skeletons are festooned with horrible shacks for the poor Khmer and marginal businesses. Polluted water flows down hilly streets. It is pretty disgusting what has happened to this former chill, quiet but yet enjoyable seaside small city.

This is not one of their better presentations but the visuals are soul wrenching:

First impressions of SIHANOUKVILLE, Cambodia! Shocking? Dangerous?

High spending or low spending. I believe the Thai gov't doesn't care as long as they are getting the money.

Before Covid, tourism didn't seem to have so much importance...until the tourists stopped coming and resorts were like ghost town's. Now they can't get enough of them, regardless of the pressure on utilities and public services.

The downturn in the rest of the Thai economy, including the auto industry is forcing even more reliance on tourism.

You will reap what you sow. The first case of Covid 19 reported outside of China was a Thai Taxi driver

Why was it call Covid 19? Because there were 18 Covid  infections before Covid 19 ...DUH!

Where did these Covid infections originate? Do your own research.

What other presents will Chinese tourists visit upon the Thai population. The Big Wig Bangkok Fat Cats will make money and that is ALL they care about.

What does DUH stand for?

I think unfortunately we are going to have to accept that is the current set of leaders path to get Thailand 80 million tourists is going to ruin any vacation plans we have for Thailand.

It's barbaric at times with 40 million, now imagine doubling it.

Revenue is down per head, so it's a clear path they are doubling the numbers of cheap tourists to make up for the short fall.

Rents are going to sky rocket, which will hurt local Thais. This is when protests will begin.

The Thai commerce ministry is complaining that Chinese-made domestic products are flooding Thai markets at a huge discount compared with Thai-made items.

This is complete BS designed to whip up nationalistic political support and to benefit Thai importers.  Thailand doesn't manufacture these low end items and is totally dependent on Chinese imports.  They want to stop Thais from being able to order them from China directly and force them to buy from a rent collecting Thai chinese middleman with a 30% mark up instead.  The result will be inflationary for ordinary Thai consumers.

It is hilarious watching boomer immigrants whining about Chinese tourists, like a load of them weren't engaged in exploiting tenuous loop-holes to et up businesses here, and engaging agents to circumnavigate visa regulations

They are now estimated to be around 35,000 per day as flights increase from more cities in China

Say around 200 per aeroplane, means 175 flights per day. Even with 500 on each would be 70!

the deal with China and Russia is, reciprocal, ie, Thais get visa-free entry to those countries

this is one of Sretta's campaign to raise the status of Thai passport, he did paid lip service with trying to negotiate similar deal with the EU, if all else fails, he can point to the success of this as 'look' I got you visa free travels to more nations,

It's International. Americans wouldn't know what DAFT means! 555

For the Confused person, DAFT is more of a Northern England/Scottish word meaning silly or foolish, or even insane.

Duhhh is usually used in an angry or annoyed way to show that something just said is already known or obvious, or to express actual or feigned ignorance or stupidity. Thank you Oxford English Dictionary.

poor sad deluded fool! - Using "fact" inaccurately doesn't always come from a place of stupidity but in most cases it does but stupid people don’t realise that…….It can be influenced by a range of factors, including misinformation, cognitive biases, or the desire to appear knowledgeable or persuasive, basically all traits of stupid people.
