Is it possible to survive and do business WITHOUT a Smartphone?

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

My phone died....

How can I survive and thrive without a phone.

My A55 will be returned to the shop...very soon.

After that...I will have no phone.

Can I survive without a phone?

And, if using just computers, laptops and desktops....

How to do this?

I am tired of smartphones....

No doubt, there is a way....

But....not exactly sure how.....

Any ideas?

Back in the day, we did business without smartphones.....

We used faxes and emails....

But, these days, one must still communicate with guys who use messaging.....on their phones.

Therefore....just using a computer with good internet connection.....

What is the best way to still be able to keep in touch....

WITHOUT a phone of one's own.

Is  this possible?

Regards,

Gamma

    I really liked my A55

  • Might as well just have a smartphone but not always bring it with you or have it turned on aside from having a minimal selection of apps. Kind of backwards to not have one in 2024, complicating things

See my edit please. Without a smart phone yes, but I still use a phone for calls and SMS. (Mostly for friends.) Customers/guests can call me if there is an emergency. No apps or wifi on my phone.

No apps or wifi on my phone.

Everything else is e-mails on a laptop.

None of my customers have a problem with that.

What about LINE and WeChat?

This is the big stumbling block...as I see it....

Tks.

Other than that....no need for a phone....

Yes.

Agree.

It's a beauty.

Thank you for sharing....

You could spend a few dozens of hours learning how to have your laptop automatically process Line and WeChat messages and forward them to an SMS server (if such exist in Thailand).

Rube Goldberg would have been very impressed by such efforts.

just KISS it!

You can use ANY of the contacts app, Whats App, Messenger, Skype, Farcebook, LINE etc etc from a PC, as long as you have mic & speakers. Banking apps are supported.

The only thing which is banned from doing on a PC is posting on Asean Now!   555

I think you got things ass-backwards.....

I can take money out of the ATM and pay for my meal with my smartphone.  I think Bangkok Bank charges extra for an ATM card so a lot of people probably choose to just go without that now.  During covid, I think you needed to use an app to get into malls at one point.  I think there will be more and more of that sort of thing so it will become necessary to have a smartphone even just for daily life.

I don't like phones - I don't like being interrupted by calls - and yet, I don't know what I would do w/o my phone.

I don't watch movies or read books on my phone - I don't surf the web...

And yet, if my wife or daughter need me for anything - I am at their disposal in seconds. It is my camera, my message center for friends who want to keep in touch, I do use it to check stock futures when I am out, I do use the GPS to guide me to new restaurants and places. And just for the ability to communicate and message, I don't know how I lived w/o it for so many years.

Zoom, Skype and Google Voice can all be used on a laptop, using a USB microphone/headset.

Or one can use a VoIP service provider.

My phone is mainly used for reading books, playing exercise videos, or storing photos of my passport, driver's license etc.

Phone calls are a minor component.

Define "business".

Define "survive".

I guess you could hire a personal assistant, who uses a smartphone.

And how do you receive the OTPs?
And SCB is the first that can not be used on a browser at all.

AseaNow? What kind of joke is that? I do 90% on PC like now.

Living without smartphone? No.

Too much to even try to explain why.

For the OP it's seems a herculean task to get a new phone.

Strange people here.

The Asean Now bit was meant as a funny for the OP.

I also do most on my PC, using Bluestacks for any Android app which I cannot access with Windows. Easier on the eyes and fingers!

I know one colleague. The couple own no mobile devices except the mandatory company iPad the husband needs for training and flights.  You have to call them at home on a landline to make social  arrangements !

They do have home internet. I don't think one can exist in USA without online access or somebody to help you get online , for access to healthcare and other services. It is only going to become more essential .

I do not use them and I have managed to survive for more than 70 years without them.

Weird eh?

Jesus Christ, Stop making threads about phones and just <deleted> buy one.

I get by with a flip phone and a laptop only because I am retired, although it is getting to the point where a smart phone may become a necessity.

Boomer alert!

Not this again. Jeez, dude; just buy the F thing and put it down already! Am of the generation that made these things possible (not yours, btw, you guys didn't contribute much bar big pensions and property to enrich yourselves with if truth be told) and see their worth -- contact, location, travel, banking, pictures, reading, breakdowns, Thai immigration matters, Thaivisa, on and on and on -- but also know when to put it down. Life is tougher nowadays without one. Why not have it as back-up? To what end? Again, just get one and set the f'in thing down. Strewth! 🙂

He probably wouldn’t need a PA as it sounds like he doesn’t have very much of a business or even a social thing going on and if wants to do it all from a laptop it sounds like he doesn’t get out much… very sad😃

In the 70s and 80s I ran a business on the road from phone booths and motel phones.  Is it easier now?  Absolutely but it's obvious that it all got done before the advent of the internet and cell phones.  I still remember my first cell phone:  Had a regular handset and a keypad.  Weighed about 5 lbs.  Just about zero coverage.  Had to use phone booths most of the time.  The range on that thing was about as far as I could throw it.
