I saw him in a small bar in Austin Texas, 10 feet away. He played without missing a note all of his earlier songs. I've seen most of the best guitarists or have listened to them for 50 years, and only Mark Knopfler is as good to me. Those others are right up there so it's hard to choose, along with Jeff Beck, Warren Haynes, Jorma Kaukonen, Michael Schenker, Brian May, Steve Hackett and Neil Schon.

You didn't mention Eddie, thank you. Might mention Carlos though.

Carlos for sure. Saw him in San Antonio in the early 90's. Eddie was okay but somewhat limited. Hendrix gets a lot of credit but his work can be done by most good guitarists. Some were innovators and get a lot of credit. Knopfler was good in Dire Straits, and only got better.

Thought of another 2 singers, one is Icelandic rock band Kaleo with the amazing main singer, and the other is the Breton folk singer Denez Prigent.  Both extremely good singers in radically different styles of music

Your word....."mental"....makes me think you are from New England...in the USA.....

Just sayin'.....

I would have suggested UK as best possibility based on knowing nothing else about the person.

From probably the best rock singer of all time (I know, some think it's Freddie Mercury, who's also great), Paul Rodgers from Bad Company, another group not yet inducted that was better than a lot that have been................

WTF!

from the same soundtrack. Not as scintillating but @ the 1:00 mark note the appearance of late SriDevi age 9 or 10 appearing in the part of Lord Murugan.

As a child actress could one not imagine the heights of Bollywood Superstardom?

Bob Seger is still going strong here in America. He's one of those guys who still Tours and makes millions doin it. Of course, with the Music Industry being what it is these days I'd guess that's really the only way to make money off music anymore.

lol Judging by the responses on long dead music, Thaivisa must have some seriously ancient members. Each to their own of course and there cannot be 'best', a classic is written at any time, it is all subjective etc etc, but if you think Billie Holiday is in that bracket, then my vote would be to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by the Sherman Bros.

LOL?

People who are interested in music listen to music from many eras.

Some of my favorite recordings were made before I was born.

There are those who let current fads and current popularity limit their experience of music and there is nothing wrong with that. However, it seriously limits your opportunities to enjoy music.

For instance, Taylor Swift indicates that Paul McCartney and Joni Mitchell have been significant influences on her song writing. Both of those artists wrote the bulk of their best music before Taylor was born.

Consider the lyric from Sultans of Swing:

"They don't give a damn,

about any trumpet-playing band,

it's not what they call rock'n'roll"

If you think Knopfler was praising those young boys, you missed the point.

There is a saying: " If you laugh at what you don't understand,  you will always have a lot to laugh at".

But no matter, it is a seriously ancient saying.
