New Rules Restrict Street Vending to Low-Income Thais Only

Featured Replies

Such regulations only open the door to extortion of street vendors, where officials can then generously "turn a blind eye" in exchange for pocket money.

  • Proof of poverty to run a stall on the street appears bazaar. Like all laws in Thailand they are made to be broken. A gap every 10 stalls and 50 cm from the road for safety sounds great . In

So then once you become successful you lose your business. 😂 Amazing Thailand 😂

All these rules on stall size and placement which will be ignored immediately until a pedestrian is forced onto the road and hit by traffic…. But now they are loe income stall holders not worth suing them

More rules..it seems these guys cannot take a break at every level of government to regulate and regulate but does it make anything really better in this circus on a country ?

An awesome rant making exactly this point, is here, from the Integrity Legal guy.  Not allowing foreign-nationals to complete with Thais in this market-niche is good - but the rest is terrible:

Can you honestly earn 25k per month on a food cart or selling second hand clothes etc

depends what you mean by earn; turnover or profit or paying yourself a salary... all very different things

Collecting tax in Thailand is like chasing a ghost.

I have been very close to a coffee vendor and a pair of noodle sellers who used to operate outside my front door until someone recently chased them up the block.

They were wonderful neighbors for nearly 15 years,  even keeping my driveway swept and helping feed my cat when I traveled.

They work incredibly hard. It pains me to think some poorly thought-out arbitrary policy change will cost two families their living.

Its a cash business, how are they gonna know how much Grandma  Pad Krapow is making?
