al mcnab Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 Hello, Ladies and Gentlemen, How are you today? Can anyone please advise me what do these things actually do? Since last year, these steel boxes are mushrooming in the streets and back lanes in Chiang Mai. Some are large, some are small. Always on the roadside. All in milky color with the electrocution warning sign. Are they something like transformers? Please refer to the phots attached below.
Will B Good Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 Transformers and circuit breakers....if we are allowed to guess. 1 1
gargamon Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 They could be where they do the connections to each residential unit for things like elec, cable/fiber, etc. Are they planning on moving utilities underground there?
brianthainess Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 Their for inquisitive kids to open and get electric shocks, the big one seems to have no lock at all........⚡.............shocking 1 3 2
OneMoreFarang Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 Probably this is a hint - unfortunately, I can't read it.

CMBob Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 They are burying electrical cables in the streets as a prelude to supposedly eliminating the electric lines and poles around the inside and outside moat roads. Without the poles, the transformers have to go somewhere.....so I too would guess that is what the electrical boxes contain. Sadly, there are spots where they've placed the electrical boxes on the sidewalks where there is no more room to walk on the sidewalk (a perfectly pathetic example of that is in front of Wat Dok Kham on Moon Muang north of Thaphae Gate). 1

al mcnab Posted September 25, 2024 Author Posted September 25, 2024 Hello, falks, Thank you for all of your posts by now. I now understood what they are for: Part of the mega project to burry those electrical cables. And I wonder if this same thing is also taking place in other provincial towns?
CMBob Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Took this photo this morning......showing one of the lovely electrical boxes blocking sidewalk traffic along Moon Muang. The graffiti showed up within a few days of installation....lol.
Photoguy21 Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Top photo looks like a termination box and the lower one a small transfer housing.
