Hello, Ladies and Gentlemen,

How are you today?

Can anyone please advise me what do these things actually do?

Since last year, these steel boxes are mushrooming in the streets and back lanes in  Chiang Mai.

Some are large, some are small. Always on the roadside.  All in milky color with the electrocution warning sign.

Are they something like transformers?

Please refer to the phots attached below.

They could be where they do the connections to each residential unit for things like elec, cable/fiber, etc. Are they planning on moving utilities underground there?

Utility junction boxes, the utility cables are in the process of being strung underground.

They are burying electrical cables in the streets as a prelude to supposedly eliminating the electric lines and poles around the inside and outside moat roads.  Without the poles, the transformers have to go somewhere.....so I too would guess that is what the electrical boxes contain.

Sadly, there are spots where they've placed the electrical boxes on the sidewalks where there is no more room to walk on the sidewalk (a perfectly pathetic example of that is in front of Wat Dok Kham on Moon Muang north of Thaphae Gate).

Termination, Junction boxes.

When they submerged the overhead cables on Walking Street dozens of them installed.

Hello, falks,

Thank you for all of your posts by now.

I now understood what they are for: Part of the mega project to burry those electrical cables.

And I wonder if this same thing is also taking place in other provincial towns?

Took this photo this morning......showing one of the lovely electrical boxes blocking sidewalk traffic along Moon Muang.  The graffiti showed up within a few days of installation....lol.

Yes they have been slowly doing this in Pattaya too.
