Car purchase

Thanks to everyone who commented. I went today with:

- Passport

- Passport copies (main page, entry stamp, visa page)

- TM30 original and copy

- 2 photos

- Lease agreement copy (just in case)

 

the officer (table #9) took everything but the lease agreement copy and collected 300 baht (no receipt 😅). I arrived at 14:00, got my residence certificate at 16:00. Easy enough. No need for agents.

Yes, it is only the lady at immigration, who issues the certificate, who thinks you need one for each licence......and she gets shirty if you try to tell her!

Is the certificate of residence available in Thai only or also in English? I tried to open a foreign bank account and was asked to provide a a certificate of residence (embassy confirmation did not suffice)?

Pretty sure its only available in Thai   you would have to go to an accredited/acceptable translation service...perhaps the foreign bank could recommend who they find acceptable  if an embassy confirmation is not sufficient. 

A followup question for this - after I got the residence certificate I proceeded to the Land transport office, just to find out they require a translation of my DL (which includes all the details in English as well, but evidently not good enough for them), certified by my Embassy. By the time I do that (a couple more weeks), will the residence certificate be accepted? I read somewhere it needs be not older than a month.

I got a list of requirements for a non-O visa from Jomtien at the first desk. Came back with all the listed docs. I was given another paper with additional requirements by the dragon lady in the back office. This was in October last year.

Not so unusual, I think. I had to get an official Japanese translation of my California DL before I could get a Japanese DL. Not cheap, either.

A requirement, not a service. New? I have no idea. I needed a motorbike license in Thailand, so I started from scratch.

 

The poster seemed surprised, puzzled, and by implication slightly indignant. I offered him perspective. I wouldn't have been the least surprised in Thailand.

The required translation here is not to Thai. It is to English. So, I am supposed to translate a document that already includes full English details, to English. Yes, it makes me surprised, puzzled, and slightly indignant. Thanks for the perspective though 🙂

I think but don't know  because never tried this method that you would need the hotel to print out the TM30 report so you could show it at immigration ?

Perhaps its all online in their database  and they can see just by passport number

where you are registered  that would make sense in a working system to track aliens around the country but T.I.T

All hotels are supposed to file these reports  but I'm sure there are some that still don't do it..Air B and B  and private rentals  you're on your own and a lot of landlords seem reluctant (from talk on here)  to report an alien amongst them  or provide the necessary documents for the alien to report themself.

Unfortunately I really need a car very quickly to drive my son to school and need planning. 

The fact that airbnb hosts do not always comply with their TM30 obligations is precisely why I am thinking about booking a night or two in a hotel to get a TM30. And I'd love to have a confirmation that this will work.

There is really no rush  to register a car in your name  if you  have difficulty with the residence certificate... If you have the cars blue book and /or sales receipt,

some people never register the vehicle in their own name...as they have all other documentation  it really doesn't matter too much..if/until it comes time to sell on the vehicle..

Does not solve our problem though, since we'll have to apply for Thai driving licenses as well.

I did it recently at IMM1 (Changwattana). The officer briefly interviewed me, checked the dates of my arrival and retirement visa. The practice there is to mail it to you by EMS/registered. Took around 5 days I guess, but it can take longer. It's only valid for one month.

Sorry, but I am not sure to understand. I know a CoR is valid for a month only, but did you get a CoR on the basis of a TM30 registration made by a hotel? What did you show to the officer?

Yes you can drive a vehicle that is still registered to the previous owner

just make sure you have all the documents from the previous owner

so that at registration time things go smoothly..

Also you can drive with your foreign

licence...but if foriegn licence is not from an English speaking country it would be worthwhile to get an International drivers permit...some recomend everyone to get international permit...in any case it again gives you more time to get things sorted out.

Of course I know about the IDP. Unfortunately, ours are almost expired and applying for fresh ones comes with significant costs and hassles, since we do not live in the country where they were issued.
