In a decisive and unexpected outcome, General Prawit Wongsuwon has suffered a significant setback, losing his bid to retain the presidency of the Thailand Aquatics Association (TAA) to Lieutenant General Boonchai Kasettrakarn.

 

During the association's annual general meeting on Saturday, Boonchai secured a landslide victory, garnering 231 votes compared to Prawit's 22.

 

Out of 277 member clubs, 271 were eligible to vote, with 18 abstaining. Prawit's loss comes just as his second four-year stint leading the TAA concluded on Thursday.

 

The election outcome marks a pivotal change in the TAA's leadership and casts doubt over Prawit's role in the broader spectrum of Thai sports administration.

 

The absence of both Prawit and Boonchai from the meeting didn't deter the clubs from endorsing them as candidates. However, Boonchai’s overwhelming win reflects a clear mandate for change within the TAA and poses a major setback for Prawit's influence in sports governance.

 

This defeat also complicates Prawit's standing in the national Olympic committee (NOCT), where leadership elections are slated for March next year. The NOCT's rules require candidates to hold an elected position within a national sports organisation, impacting Prawit’s aspirations for continued leadership.

 

Amidst this changing landscape, General Decha Hemkrasi of the Thai Cycling Association (TCA) and Pimol Srivikorn from the Taekwondo Association of Thailand are emerging as favourites for the NOCT chairman position.

 

Despite the setback, Prawit still has a chance to regain eligibility by securing a role in another sports body before the elections, reported Bangkok Post.

Don't know how Prawit even got into the army. Let alone getting up to General status. The military height regulation says yer have to be 1.5 metres. He was only 1.45 in his prime; two full inches short.

 

Why do they need him on the Thai Olympic Committee? Good grief.

He's a very old man, not very mobile and lacking in up to date knowledge and insight.

 

Surely there's several other Thai folks much younger, much more suited, sports oriented and more capable of taking Thailand into a better picture re the olympics.

I don't think he has the physique for his current body let alone another. Aquatic sports marker buoy perhaps?

I agree with you.

 

Why must it be a general, army or police in the first place. 

 

It should be  a sportsman or a sportswoman who has actually achieved something in the international sporting world, and is recognised as an international sporting star.

The sooner he’s gone the better. They need change, not sure if they’ll get the right person to change things, but hopefully it’ll be better. 
Prawit can barely raise his head any more.  I doubt he will continue to raise his hopes up. That was a slaughterhouse vote and hopefully an eye opener for him. 

Anytime this extremely old and very, very toxic man suffers a defeat this is a victory for the Thai people, and a victory for the nation. This man should never have been allowed to come anywhere near the corridors of power, and I don't think he's ever done a single thing to benefit the Thai people. It's always been about him, and him only.
