How to make friends ... on forums like this (parts 1-2-3 of 9)

Over the years I've met with 6-8 forum members, for lunch or coffee. To a man (and two women,)  all were nice, very pleasant people. Lunch conversation was enjoyable, interesting, and lively, and the lunch hour usually became two.

But in fact, common interests were few so most of us slipped back into remaining 'forum friends' while friendships grew with a few.

Have you read the comment, or are you just counting. Hope you weren´t an accountant before. 😂

Half of the replies are from the OP himself.

Are you only interested in meeting people that have the same interests as yourself? Seems odd, why would you do that?

Yeah, of course. The man has a huge idea. He will contact The Thaiger later an ask is he can sell his lessons in downloadable files later. 🤣

Common ground is good, but for all my activities, we shared the passion for what we did, and had many different backgrounds and ages, but one single thing brought us together.

Maybe AN could be such a thing? After all we know quite a bit about each and one who have been here for a while, but OP seems to be a "Newbie", or? Who knows how long he has been here, or how many profiles he previously had.

Wow!

No. I'm interested in making friends with people who have the same interests as myself.

I never suggested it was a requirement for simply meeting.

“Billy no mates” couldn’t get anyone to join him for lunch or dinner in his expat dinning club topic but is now telling us how to make friends.  What’s next Billy?

Kind offer: thanks @Hummin, but you "missed" another one.

You sound like an interesting and intelligent person, but I wish you had read the opening post more carefully before posting a reply.

In your defense, most posters, on most forums, do not read carefully before posting, they just see a few words and then "riff" on that.

@Hummin and myself don't disagree too much, and civil when we do.  Always up to meet like minded folks, but spur of the moment, as don't do schedules.

Hate needing to be anywhere at anytime.

OP, you can see already with just the immediate responses as to what peole do, they immediately checked your profile, is there any longevity there etc, its an immediate cautious reaction, and with the internet being what it is, rightly so. Ultimately its just words on a screen, and could literally be anyone anywhere and you have just become their entertainment. People are naturally suspicious and you wont change that, in fact you will heighten that doing what you have suggested.

I recall the name 'Old Curmudgeon' from way back - used to have a mug with the same words on the side as their avatar..

Someone returning after a long ban? Recent posts I've seen seem to confirm the name tag.

Anyway, one of the first thing scammers do is try to get the mark off the main forum where contact was established and onto something like what's App or Instagram.

Why go on a forum for that? A scammer could meet people anywhere much easier (assuming they are in Thailand and not Nigeria).

Like any expat bar, restaurant, or cafe. Lower down on the food chain any tourist landmark.

Well that's just it isn't it? You don't know where anyone on this forum is or who they are.

It's always better for the real professionals to remain out of sight and reach of their marks - be they romance scammers, bitcoin scammers or penny stock pumpers or whatever. And there are enough quasi concentration camps in Cambodia in particular where legions of trafficked victims are forced to 'fatten pigs' for the final kill. India is full of them.

No way would I move onto another platform. Why? There'd be absolutely nothing in it for me. And I'd be opening myself to unknown potential threats - totally unnecessarily as I have a full enough diary as it is.

I have no interest in hearing how you went to a mall one time and there were no bum guns in the toilets.  Happy to be alone.

Thanks for reporting that.
