I called me Mom last night and looked at my phone log. Other than three business calls, I havent spoken to a human being other than me Mum for 6 months.

But I have WeChat, Telegram, Skype, Google Voice, Signal, Line, Whats App, and Meta just bursting with messages. Plus the AIS and spam messages in Thai to me Thai number. the Smart Corp dont forget to top up and spin the wheel ones to me Cambodia number, and of course, the begging Democrat party messages to me US number, please give us money, please..

I cant say it bothers me, since talking on the phone can interfere with daily life. Try holding a cell phone to your ear while you are stir frying. Do you put the phone down when youre ripping out last nights digested double portion of SomTam Puu?

But, am I the only one who no longer talks on the phone??

Very rarely, for some business purpose.

I don't like phones or talking on phones. That's 'cause, during my early years, whenever the phone rang, Dad would exclaim loudly, "Oh LORD! Who could THAT be?" But as a teenager I kept the line well engaged talking to girls.

I resisted getting a smartphone for the longest time before I finally succumbed. Necessary evil. I have all the chat programs on my PC that I need, and I can use the web interfaces.

Texting sucks.

I can stir fry with a speaker phone.

When I’m taking a dump and video chatting with a girl I just set my iPad on the sink with the camera pointed at the ceiling…..ya know….because I’m respectful.

Talk..  with video to my son at least 5x a week,     sister 1x a week / with video

a couple of buddies back in the US a voice call or video every couple of weeks,,

I keep a US based # with Magic Jack ( works out to less than $30 for the year ,,  unlimited US call time ) and keeps me registered with my US bank

and video calls are google meet.    which costs nothing other than your standard phone bill

all calls are  between 1am and 4am Thai time

other than that the ringer volume on the phone is always off........

By phone I am going to assume you mean an actual phone call using a number,

So as a direct connection call without using an app, I have had to use it approximately 5 times this year, of which all the calls were to a call center of some type.

For every day communication with friends or those I want to be friend with I mostly use Line and Messenger. And both have VOIP ability so while I have talked to people it was thru an App on my phone.

It is easier and quicker to send a text message. Usually when on the phone the conversations tend to become long and drawn out.

I never use Speaker Phones because of obscenity laws and public lewdness

It is phone talk isn't it---just using another method to cone ct with them--and its great, can phone daughters and friends in Oz -UK America and not cost a dime......

If you are writing about the cell phone, to be technically correct, a cellular phone is not really a "telephone".   It is radio communications piece of hardware and I guess with the abilities to function as a computer.

When used to make a telephone call, the device communicates with a base station (cellular tower) which interconnects you call into the local telephone system.

As much as I don't like it sometimes, it really is a neat device.

Only use the "smart phone" to make telephone calls or SMS. I know what my family and friends look like so do not need to look at them while talking.

When stir frying, it can also be a bit hard to send a message. Let´s just sum it with, that it will be much better to text or talk when dinner is finished, right? 😂

My most hated line in Thailand is .. “can you add me on LINE”

Do you ha’ - you can’t even finish the sentence without being interrupted with the thoughtless response of “add LINE” I do appreciate that it’s easier to use a photo, get a written request or send a location, but what happened to communication? “where is your shop” “add li..” no, can you tell me what area your shop is in because I’m driving down the road and will come and see you” - I have also lost track of the people I have sent location to and they can’t use google maps and we end up talking them in or going to collect, so how does it all make sense? I don’t worry about the loss of verbal communication, I just hate “add line” as a first line when communicating.

Don't most people annoyingly shout at it using face time on loud speaker. Gone are the days people had discreet conversations with the phone against the ear. Why do we all want to listen. A phone has a speaker and can amplify the sound at the other end! They are just noise pollution today.

Apparently, this all kicked off around November 10th.

The first victims fell ill shortly after that with the Aussie girls being hospitalised on the 13th.

Not sure when the Danes passed away (they were the first), but is seems that the Laos police did nothing to investigate this until it was raised at government level earlier this week.

Makes the Thai police almost look proactive.

RIP youngsters. So sad.

Never been big on phone conversations, to me a phone call is solely to sort something out, as soon as whatever it is has been sorted out it's goodbye. I certainly make far less phone calls now than I did in the past due to various messaging apps on my phone.

I much prefer messaging to voice calls nowadays, but my brother and my best friend don't and they call too frequently...without even a courtesy msg to ask if I'm free to talk. Then they ramble on an hour and sometimes twoMy bro for 90% of the "conversation" and my friend for 99%. 🤣

Yes. Adults still use the phone to connect with friends and family. Nothing like hearing someone's voice. Messages are just not the same.

Bit harsh, Mike. While it is nice to talk on occasion and is what we’re all about, calling is a bit old school, a proper boomer thing. It has nothing on face to face communication and puts people on the spot. It is such a demanding endeavour. I want your time, NOW! If you must, just be sure to give them warning before you want to tell others what you had for breakfast… 🙂
