Pattaya is a major destination for backpackers? He sounds like a bricklayer on vacation.

Maybe you should read the article and look at the picture. Duh.

Picture captured from CCTV.

An incident involving an Italian backpacker has surfaced in Pattaya, with CCTV footage capturing the man stealing money from an apartment counter and failing to pay a Thai woman for her services. The owner of the apartment has raised alarms, urging Pattaya residents to remain cautious.

The incident took place at Zeus Apartment on Soi Buakhao, South Pattaya, Chonburi. CCTV footage revealed the man, identified as Andrea, an Italian national, wearing a tank top, knee-length denim shorts, and carrying a backpack.

Around dawn on December 1, he was seen rummaging through belongings at the bar counter on the ground floor, which also operates as a restaurant. He stole 4,000 baht in cash before fleeing the scene.

Ms. Darinraya Kongsuk, 36, the apartment owner, explained that the man had checked into the apartment on November 29 and was scheduled to check out on December 1. On the morning of his departure, he came downstairs early when no staff were present at the front desk. Taking advantage of the empty counter, he rang the service bell to ensure no one was around, then took the pink bag containing cash from the counter, placed his room key down, and escaped.

Ms. Darinraya also recounted troubling behaviour during his stay. The man brought a Thai woman to his room, only for her to run downstairs an hour later, reporting that he had refused to pay her agreed fee. Ms. Darinraya added that the man spoke fluent Thai, which she found somewhat unusual. She expressed deep disappointment, stating that his actions disrespected Thai culture and hospitality.

Following the theft, Ms. Darinraya filed a police report with Pol. Lt. Itthikorn Saikrathok of Pattaya City Police Station. She has urged authorities to swiftly apprehend the suspect, believing he may still be in Pattaya. She also issued a warning to other accommodation providers in the area to remain vigilant against similar incidents.

The police are investigating the case and working to locate the suspect. Local residents and business owners have been advised to report any sightings or suspicious activity involving the man to the authorities.

his actions disrespected Thai culture? Stealing, or not paying for getting his leg over. Of course, prostitution is banned in Thailand. Get this despicable bar steward and bang him up.

Hopefully the apartment owner recorded a TM 30 so they will have a photo and all other passport details.

He checked into the apartment on November 29 and checked out on December 1.  So it was just for 2 nights, and it was an apartment, not hotel.  I don't suppose the owner is operating Airbnb at her apartment and renting out to guests for 2 days.

If only TAT went for quality over quantity this sort of thing wouldn't happen

Thailand infrastructure and weather is not as much as magnet for well heeled tourists especially for repeat stays compared to the Caribbean or southern sunny Europe. I have Caucasian friends who skipped asean countries with Singapore an exception on their business trips to China Korea or Japan . Primary reason is they are not that interested in the culture of ‘poor’ countries  nor do they want to immerse in their culture. Hot humid weather and not great infrastructure not helping either.
speaking of quality tourists, it seems that Thailand tend to attract the dregs of society or white trash . Maybe it is a ‘like attract like ‘ syndrome?

That guy is a sucker and is plain wrong. Sure, Ladies "services" are actually not cheap at all anymore and inflation is "steep", times change.... (unless you opt for a toothless  Gremlin hooked on meth). Many are almost on par with many western places for the same type of "services" and people definitely have less money. But absolutely not an excuse.

Bricklayers are quite well paid and they don't tend to be thieves

That is correct. I once met a Caucasian staying at a 5 star hotel in my youth in Singapore and was greatly given a culture shock upon learning that he was just a carpenter from a Nordic country. In our country, only wealthy businessmen stay in affluent hotels. It must be a great skill set that paid well in their country.

‘reporting that he had refused to pay her agreed fee. ‘

that is why in western countries, customers pay in advance. Payment before service because customer dissatisfaction is aplenty in these type of services.
ASEAN culture find it rude to ask for  payment before service as in service industry like restaurants too. Maybe the trend of western restaurants in Thailand  using online apps of payment before service will also creep into this type of service industry.

I don't know about Thailand , but in the UK that would be regarded as rape .

She gave her consent on the condition that he pays her money .

If he didn't pay her, then she didn't give consent which would make it rape

"The man brought a Thai woman to his room, only for her to run downstairs an hour later, reporting that he had refused to pay her agreed fee."

Since prostitution does not exist, he must have asked her to clean his room.

When he offered her his thin, soft spaghetti 🍝 as a payment for the cleaning job - she left. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Grow up.

Everybody pays, girlfriend, wife, mistress, hooker - whatever you choose - you pay!

The only difference is - a hooker is more likely to give you something in return that you didn't want!

But more likely - she'll give you more of what you don't get from the other three categories......

Perhaps in your socioeconomic subculture. For those of us who associate with people who are self sufficient and gainfully employed, your assumption does not apply. You assume that women must be "kept" and that the man is always the wage earner. Plenty of my friends and work colleagues are in shared financial arrangements or where the woman earns more than the man.  No one is paying for the services of the other.

Prostitution does indeed exist in Thailand though .

(Yeah , I know that you were just trying to clever and making some reference to what a policeman said in pattaya about ten years ago)

In Italy one can barely see a cam indoors, and very few outdoors due to very strict and useless "privacy laws". I bet he was relying on this, not knowing that Thailand is monitored by thousands of cams, everywhere, every time.

Will soon be busted - expecting to see a good index pointer in front of the BiB

He offered her 100 Baht. She said " That wont cover it!"

He replied "No, neither will a dustbin lid'

(Old joke.....I'll get my hat.......)
