You would need a Wise card which cannot be obtained whilst in Thailand, but can be sent to an alternate address. say UK, and forwarded to you.

I keep hearing this, but 3 years ago I got a wise card shipped to address in Bangkok.

I use virtual card for lazada and dtac topups.

By WISE or by someone to whom it was sent in your own country?

My understanding is that with Wise, you are purely using the ATM service, which you pay for, and the money is not going through the Thai banking system into an account that is linked to a card.

I read this when researching.

How can an online purchase from say Lazada or Shopee be using the ATM system.

It goes through the Visa/Mastercard system as with any other Debit Card purchase.

I wasn't talking about the digital card for online purchases,

I was talking about people who filled up their Wise card in their own country and withdraw cash in Thai baht from ATMs in Thailand.

My response was in answer to another poster, who was questioning if it was classed as taxable income coming in or if it would be noticed if they were withdrawing cash in Thailand on a Wise card.

It would not be going through your Thai bank account or a card linked to it, you would purely be using an ATM.

How do you know that it works then please?

I can confirm that it can be used on Lazada, Shopee and Amazon.

Because Wise themselves explained how to use it for online purchases in their Q and A.

I always use COD with Lazada and others.

Would it then not be going through the banking system of whoever's ATM machine you use?

Would whoever put the SAD emoji on this post please explain their sadness. Thanks.

By wise.

I think I registered my address in Canada, but I never needed any proof of address. They sent the card to Bangkok.

I am stating what I read and that was the use of things such as withdrawing on home country cards, including Wise cards, they are not linked to expat Thai bank accounts. Such transactions, which are cash, would not be picked up on.

It would be just like a tourist withdrawing money on a card from the UK in Thailand.

Too many making too much of a big deal about small things like this.

Of course, it would go through the bank of whoever owned the ATM, that's why they charge a fee.

Strange for your case. I use WISE for shopee online no problem.  I have physical card and on my apple wallet. I use WISE just like any other credit/debit card.

I opened Wise in America and have the physical card.

You say I can use on Shopee online. Have you used it with lazada?

Thanks

I use my Wise "virtual" card for anything online, including Lazada.  It's preferable as if somehow compromised it is easy to create a new virtual card rather than the hassle of getting a new physical one.  I have 2 physical cards which I use when essential, hotels, etc.  My cards all stay "frozen" until actually needed.

Does that require you to have a THB balance at Wise and then do the transfer? or other way?

Wise takes from your wallet whatever currency is available and best deal.

I did not use it with lazada due to reason nothing to do with WISE. Lazada wouldn't allow me to have an account because the Thai mobile number that I have is previously registered with another user and Lazada wouldn't want to do anything about as far as I know.

7-11 it works fine.  Supermarkets and most shops in malls.  Only issue is a relatively low limit for a "tap" payment - I think it's THB 1500.

7-11 is 200 baht but i never spend that much

One way to avoid bringing money into Thailand and any subsequent tax is to use alternative methods to pay for things, i can use my UK Mastercard for online purchases but how do you use Wise to pay for Thai things?

Won't avoid tax as if tax resident IE 180days+ the new rules cover all financial transactions both in Thailand and elsewhere. Financial institutions have to declare internationally including Thailand.

That said I'm not sure Thailands revenue dept can cope with so many expats. Only K bank has sent forms. Can't see all the others doing same. Like other countries income tax depends on deduction at source or self declaration and with tax credits available for the 57 dual tax agreements little increased revenue will be generated

You can get a virtual card apparently, i was just checking their website. Not much use in google wallet/phone as not widely used in Thailand

Paying with Google Wallet/Apple Pay/ Samsung Pay is available more than people think. It is just a RFID payment the same as actually using a card. You can use it anywhere they have a machine for touch card payments (Usually called contactless payment). 711, Big C, Lotus's, Fuel Stations, Starbucks, Tops etc. The only problem is the staff invariably do not know how to do it. So what I do is wave my BB debit card but don't let them take it and as I go to touch the machine with the card I use my phone instead. They often say I haven't paid yet but when they look at the till the transaction has gone through. Transactions over 1500 baht require your PIN. One place did ask me to put my card in before it would let me enter the PIN - I can't remember where now. It didn't matter to me as I had a physical Wise card but that could be awkward with a virtual card. There has been a guy on this forum who claims he got his Wise card sent to his Thai address. It could be something to do with where you declared being tax resident to Wise. My account is based at my UK address and I obtained the card when I was in the UK. It only allows 2 free ATM withdrawals a month so being able to load the card and make payments could become invaluable.

I can set up Google Wallet on my Samsung Galaxy Watch, so I will do that next and upset the girl at Starbucks 🤣
