What are you talking about. Food in Spain is great and cheap. Tapas are usually free of charge even if you order only a cheap beer.

What are you talking about?

Nothing is free.  Just because it doesn't appear as a line-item on the bill, doesn't mean you aren't paying for it.

Most of Europe has great food. Never got food poisoning there, only in Thailand.

The problem I have with Europe is the people. Generally very close minded and unapproachable. Yep, just like some on this forum.

And always feel the need to stick it to Americans. Doesnt matter if they are young or old

Torrevieja is one of the cheapest decent place for retirees. It's famous for salt lakes. Many get help breathing salty air and bathing.

It's 50km south of Alicante. Many retires are happy there.

More upscale is Malaga and area south of it. Marbella is like Bevery Hills.

I've been looking living there. Transportation is excellent. Train from Malaga airport to Fuengirola is fast and cheap.

However, it's damp and cold for 4-5 months. Torrevieja even more so.

Summers are too hot - over 40 C.

The best weather is on Gran Canaria Islands and islands next to it. Prices 4x of Jomtien beach.

I know Torrevieja from many decades ago, and it would be the last place in Spain where wqould want to move to.

You pretend to know everything, then why you show your ignorance over and over again, in every thread you get involved?

407 THB is 10 meals for me here.....

But in EU that's cheap. In many countries just a glass of vine is 10 e.

How's weather? Torre is very popular for expats.

Give me strength, why do you guys dive in without processing the op? Everyone and their cat knows you can get a meal for 40-50 baht with free water, but he is clearly not alluding to that kind of meal or establishment. How many khao man gai / pad thai places do you know that serve wine and free bread & tapas? You would look a right oddball sipping cheap plonk on your plastic roadside stool. So funny.

/Edit: sorry, just noticed your nik. No worries.//

Prices are just one thing only too, which are good in Spain already but it is also service and quality.

Plus the fact, at least for Europeans, no visa need at all, healthcare options, mortgage options, ownership options + work options as you please + all other countries cheap and nearby for visits compared to here doing domestic trips or only having cambodia/vietnam/laos/malaysia for comparable distance / costs.

Last but not least, if then needing to pay tax somewhere as gates slowly close globally, it is better there too. Schooling for those with children free too. Quite a lot of pro's actually.

I mean if you wanted to have a lot of western comfort groceries and cook at home, this is also a better deal than here already. Life is not only about eating out, anyone knows this gets boring when doing it constantly.

I also think that these 40-50 baht Thai dishes are cute but not real food for constant and daily. You might as well compare that to doing only bread with eggs and ham etc in Europe, then costs are equal too. Aside from the fact that these dishes are most times already in the 60-100 baht area nowadays.

You are lucky to find 25 grams of meat in that with 1 egg. That's why they eat all the time.

Bread and Tapas don't belong with Khao man gai, and neither does wine.

The price for the meal, without the wine, was 8.80 Euro + 10% VAT = 9.68 Euro (348 Baht at today rate)

A similar meal can be had in Thailand for less than 400 baht, in a beach front restaurant hundreds of meters away from the beach, as in the case of the OP.

A glass of wine can also be had for 2.5 Euro (about 100 baht) in the same restaurant

Ageism should be part of your morals ,I'm sorry to hear that you do not like American

I think Thailand can be defined as cheap when you are stuck at around the minimum western wage situation but able to also earn or live from that wage or pension here instead. Same reason why it is a good place to bootstrap some online startup.

Just another misconception from the same "experts" that know MSG is unhealthy.

First of all, fruitwine isn't juice with alcohol in it, it's wine to which fruit juice got added. Something comnpletely different.

Next, I always see members brag on here that they buy fruit juice in the supermarket, and ferment it to the best wine money can buy.

Rent is 450 EUR for an apartment with lift near the beach (2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, etc.).
Electricity and water have not arrived yet, but the previous tenant paid 35 a 40 EUR monthly on electric and about 15 EUR on water.
I paid on arrival 20 EUR for a SIM card with Internet and Calls (Orange)
Yes, I can still afford to dine out and drink my glass of wine.

Interesting. Your EUR 520 is about Bht 19000. Easy to live on.

You just took it to a new level, asking for fish and chips in a seafood restaurant, and then you are surprised they don't have that

I am confused now I always thought fish is seafood

OP:

Do you live in Alicante? Town looks very livable, great pedestrian and cycle infrastructure, and very clean. Downtown looks very walkable/livable. I imagine air quality must be quite good being on the coast. Is it easy to get around on public transportation? What do people say about potential for the type of catastrophic flooding experienced in Valencia? Might just have to check it out. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I live in Alicante.

Very clean and very nice places to walk around.

Public transportation is ok.

No problem with the flash floods from Valencia

Did happen in Valencia more times in the past.

Yes you are confused, battered fish is something you order in a fish and chips shop, not in a seafood restaurant that serves fresh seafood.

Surprised you didn't order chicken nuggets a side dish as well

No chicken nuggets for me after watching how they are made.

There is no free lunch in Spain.... or bread or tapas.

You get them IF you buy a meal. Or sit on the counter and drink, then after a few, you get "free" tapas.
