I did google the name, as I never heard somebody called like that in Switzerland. I found somebody (maybe even him) living in Switzerland. But the name is persian. One of the many refugees that got a Swiss Passport after some years. 

 

It's not common for this immigrants to act like original Swiss people. Because of the mass of immigrants in Switzerland its more the other way around. We, as a nation, start to act like our immigrants. And that does not better our behaviour unfortunately.

The culture is very different from that of the west, an aggressive blast of a car horn, the middle finger, yelling out like a lunatic is considered provocation, I see this behaviour everyday from foreigners on Soi Buakhou. He's upset them some how. 

 

 

He went to a restaurant and when he came out they were surrounding his car. 

 

How do you reckon a 66 year old man provokes between 4-6 guys to the point they beat him up and smash their car ?

 

 

- Either they were upset because he parked in a spot they felt they had a claim over (parked in front of someone else is restaurant etc) and they wanted to teach him a lesson.

 

- They demanded parking money from him (this has happened in Bangkok to a friend parking on the roadside, the friend refused to pay and returned to a car with flat tyres) - he refused to pay and the beat him ?

 

- They were breaking in to his car and he caught them, they reacted ?

 

- They were sat on his car and he wasn't happy about that, he reacted, they reacted worse ?

Whatever happend - they were looking for trouble.....   it seems the guy was naive enough not to avoid giving any possible trigger to a group of thugs.

You only mention 'German' sounding Swiss names. As far as I know Switzerland has four different language regions, so probably four different 'typical' Swiss names.

I'm from the Netherlands, and I have a name that looks like it's from Spain or Portugal. And my family tree goes back at least 250 years in the Netherlands. Imagine how the reactions would be from the usual xenophobes on this forum if I ever appeared in Thai news.

So someone's name is basically totally irrelevant, that's my point.

It’s almost comical, the mental gymnastics some engage in to absolve these brutes of blame. As if their excessive, violent frenzy could somehow be justified by a perceived slight or an unkind word.

I agree with you, this was absolutely not Justified...  I agree that there is a likelihood that this was perfectly avoidable by keeping quiet... Its even possible the Swiss guy swore which triggered the thugs...  (conjecture of course).

Since I rarely go out, and almost never go out after sundown, I feel very safe here where I am.

I like the peace of mind which I very much enjoy.

 

The only experience I have with seeing Farang picked on is when I read it in the news.
