I was thinking the exact same.

 

I have struck up conversations with Japanese maybe two or three times in all my years here.

 

They tend to avoid us, and certainly don't get into disputes as a rule.

     Tamp down the drama and faux outrage.   Post away.  And, I assume I am allowed to do the same--which is all I was doing.   I found it interesting that one poster commenting had not been to Pattaya in more than 10 years and the other had a 1-day visit 12 years ago.   I did urge both posters to 'continue to comment to their heart's desire'.   I look forward to their keen insights on the Pattaya of today.

There is no question that Pattaya has become the most crime riddled area in all of Thailand. That is quite a distinction, it seems to attract a very low element, a violent element and people who are prone to these sorts of nonsensical outbursts.

 

It's never a particularly good idea to intervene when people are having an argument, okay if you see a woman being violently assaulted that's one thing, but arguing is quite another.

 

The last aspect of this is that some people just cannot hold their alcohol well, and simply should not be drinking and when they are drinking people should really stay clear of them. This guy's life is over, hopefully his fellow prisoners will give him a warm welcome.

I offer that it isn't about holding alcohol well. A nasty and mean person becomes a nasty and mean drunk. A  happy person  becomes the laughing friendly drunk. Alcohol is offered up as an excuse for being a violent turd to start with. We have all experienced these people. I am fortunate that my drinking friends in my youth were all happy loveable drunks.

They cannot survive the humiliation aftermath thus the fatal reaction. 
3) mind your own business when you are just a tourist in their country. The locals know how to handle such situation better.

Yes, my Japanese friends are always polite and careful with their English for not many middle aged or elderly Japanese are versed in English language. They are very conscious of losing face with their utterances. Another issue is their lack of understanding western culture and slang .

I do completely agree, alcohol does bring out one's true nature. I think what I was intending to say is that if one is a nasty piece of work with a violent tendency, alcohol tends to exacerbate that.

I spoke to a few younger Japanese in, believe it or not, Soi Nana last year.

 

There was one guy who spoke for the rest of them, as he was the most fluent in English.

 

I was very polite too, you find when people are so nice they bring the best out in ourselves.

 

I found them very nice people and pleasant as well as very well-mannered.

No genius, what I am saying is that historically, men have beaten their wives and it continues to this day.  Who are we to judge?  Some women also abuse men.  Stay in your lane.  I asked my mother why she put up with the beating, she said, we have seven kids and he brings home money to feed you when you were young.  So think about that for a minute.  When  no access to food or shelter is available, some culture survive as best as they could.  He stopped the beatings 5 years into the marriage...we all have demons.

Thai genes seems to have been the dominant over the English genes.

Many years ago I would react quickly in drink, over the years I mellowed and now ignore any people who try baiting me when alcohol is involved.

 

That said. I haven't had a beer for four months, it doesn't have the same enjoyment as it used to.

Thanks, some people never ask questions about this culture, or do a google research.  One time a guy up north tried to intervene and stop a fight between Thai men.  Both groups turned on him and sent him to the hospital.  Their reasoning was simple..."He should have mind his own business".  This is Thailand!  Deal with it!  Leave the locals to figure out their situations.  Stop trying to save people who may not appreciate you getting involved.
