Government eye hospital in Nakhon Phathom

They also have a small branch in Bangkok (no website) but I do not know if they could do  such an extensive procedure there. The  main hospital in Nakon Pathom probably better option. Bring a Thai speaker with you.

Are you sure you need this procedure? Which ophthalmologist advised it and for what condition?

@Sheryl is correct. It is not an operation and recovery to have unless absolutely necessary (speaking from experience).

Probably you've been informed about the risks and your opthalmologist recommended this kind of procedure as ultimate ratio?

Some hospitals will do it as outpatient, many for inpatient because of complications.

Full recovery could be more than a month.

Good luck.

December 2024, I was at Rutnin Eye Hospital in Bangkok for my annual checkup.  The retinal specialist I've seen for years said that I should consider getting a "Pars plana vitrectomy with membrane peeling."  He said that the procedure takes under an hour and that the success rate is about 90%.  (Reason for procedure:  macular pucker in right eye = epiretinal membrane, which is scar tissue, usually caused by the vitreous tugging on the retina.)

Visual recovery is gradual and usually takes about one month.  Local anesthetic and the eye is patched over night.

Because I still have 20/20 vision with my eyeglasses, we will wait until June for another checkup, and we'll make a decision then.  Specialist said was up to me whether to have the surgery.  To be honest, since the procedure wouldn't improve my current vision, I'm not likely to have the procedure.

The cost quoted was 220,000 Baht.

I had an epiretinal membrane in my right eye diagnosed a few years ago. Was relieved it wasn’t macular degeneration, as the symptoms seem similar - blurry vision and wavy lines. My optometrist also said it was up to me whether or not to have surgery. I elected not to, due to difficulty of operation. Risk I’m running of course is that if the same thing happens to my good eye, car driving’s over for me for good. Also, apparently the operation is less successful the longer you delay. My vision’s not deteriorated further, and I have an annual retinal scan. I can read a car number plate from over 20 paces with my good eye, about 5 paces with the bad one. Things look sharp with both eyes open, interesting how the brain manages to ignore input from the bad eye.
