AI, which countries have moved their capital cities?

AI Overview

Many countries have moved their capital cities, including Brazil, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, and more.

Countries that have moved their capital cities
  • Brazil: Moved from Rio de Janeiro to Brasília in 1960
  • Nigeria: Moved from Lagos to Abuja in 1991
  • Kazakhstan: Moved from Almaty to Astana in 1998
  • Malaysia: Moved from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya in 2001
  • Myanmar: Moved from Yangon to Naypyidaw in 2005
  • South Korea: Moved from Seoul to Sejong in 2007
  • Tanzania: Moved from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma in 2023
  • Russia: Moved from Moscow to St. Petersburg between 1712 and 1918

Why was the capital of Egypt moved?

Considering Cairo's rising population, congestion, and pollution, the government announced in 2015 that it would build and migrate to the so-called New Administrative Capital (the city is not yet officially named). Aug 23, 2024

Opposition to the move points at strengthening infrastructure in Bangkok and nearby areas, which are at risk of sinking.

If and when Bangkok sinks, let the government sink along with it.

Let them move it anyplace it will still remain cheaper and better then Hua Hin where foreigners get cheated on a 24 hour basis either by workers, contractors, restaurants...you name it. Most bank staff are very rude with foreigners lately and this feeling was never there before.

Foreigners are really not considered in Hua Hin compared to other cities in Thailand with amazing  and wonderful services, prices and people.  The general feeling in Hua Hin is that a foreigner is mainly wanted for their money. Of course never can generalise but if you have a house, and you have to deal with those contractors, workers, sub contractors...... you'll get lied, cheated like no other place on earth or even in Thailand. Prices are getting close to those in the west and that too for work so poorly done that even a 15 year old would do better in Bangkok or Pattaya area.

So move the capital if you must, but definately not to Hua Hin.

Thanks for that info. But I don’t believe Hua Hin is mentioned as being on the list of alternatives. It does seem that you have a chip on your shoulder about the place though

Probably have ran out of silly expensive projects so someone had to come up with a new idea to prove their worth in their unelected position

The study recommends building a sea barrier or setting up regional centers to reduce the pressure on Bangkok's central agencies. It also evaluated infrastructure in Nakhon Ratchasima, focusing on its roads and high-speed rail links to other regions.

They are avoiding the real issue blaming the sea rising. When it is already proven that Bangkok is literally sinking. A sea wall will not help them if the ground beneath them continues to sink.

^^^ Well, this is a Thai forum after all. Hardly relative. Thais probably care as much about what happens in Cajun country as the latter do Thais.

Not a biggie, many places have tiny nominal capitals... just shift government house and irrelevant politicians (all of them), albeit Bkk will still need saving. It was always a lost cause when what's his name relocated to a river delta from Ayuthaya in the 1700s. Guess they never envisaged such expansion.

Even 50+ years ago when I was living in Thailand, the talk was about relocating the capital to Ayutthaya but since we have seen the flooding there for so many years the situation would remain the same.

I love the way they classify Louisiana and Florida as their own countries.  Virginia, not so much.  It must be Blue.

Move it to Soi 6 Pats.

The government has been there didn't like it, so built city hall on North Pattaya Road.

This is not like in Myanmar as the problem is that Bangkok is sinking, while the sea level is rising... and if you are right, then look at the US that have had 9 cities serve as capitals...

What proof do we have that sea levels are rising. I have a boat in Hull and the tide marks on the locks and docks are the same as they were 200 years ago. I think you will find BKK is sinking due to the water table being lowered due to population expansion.

Pakistan did the move it works but you have to take your time.  Start relocating minor government  agencies first. Remember that while you move the agencies there are all the people in those agencies that have to sell homes at a loss and buy new at new location

Housing market will  die.

Every few years a new destination 🤗

Last time Petchabun. I was told many "Hi-Sos' bought land already there.

Now a new boom in Nakhon?

Some will get very rich soon.🤗

If you ask me, it's another job for President Trump.  He'll have the city cleared of undesirables and leveled flat in no time.

He does have a desirable beachside property coming available although I think Gaza might be a leap too far for Thailand.

The Thames barrier was built to withstand a "once in a century" flood. It has been raised over 220 times since 1982.

Most capital cities of countries with maritime border are on the coast at the mouths of a major river.  They are thus vulnerable to rising sea levels ( and Hull is not generally considered a belwether as far as that goes - try looking at some of the research instead).

And all that after they've only just finished & opened & used the new and vastly costly Parliament Building. Built beside the river ...

And in the U.S., state capitals have moved a fair amount too. California has moved its capital 5 times in only 175 years (or 3 times if you don't consider the 2 moves it made due to floods in Sacramento in the 1860's).

Higher elevation? Politicians already have a difficult enough time with brain function. They need all the oxygen they can get!

I wonder who owns the land in Nakhon Ratchasima?

Probably the same person who owns the land in Phatumthani, the location to which he tried to move the capital to 20 years ago...

Could ask the Dutch for advice -- they've been keeping the sea at bay for centuries.

Ah,but I forgot....foreigners know nothing....

I worked on the Thames Barrier in London back in the late 70's, early 80's and the piling contractor for the piers was a Dutch company called HBM. Fantastic group of engineers.

The two main British contractors were Costain and Tarmac, The consortium was known as CTH.

New Orleans is sinking man and I don't wanna swim.

If so, please feel free to stop fighting and just let nature have it´s way. Good luck in the afterlife!
