Trump Threatens to Cut Federal Funding Over Campus Protests

Donald Trump has escalated his stance against pro-Palestinian demonstrations on college campuses, threatening to withdraw federal funding from universities that allow what he terms "illegal protests." In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared that all federal aid to such institutions would be halted, and he vowed to imprison "agitators" or deport them if they were foreign nationals. "American students will be permanently expelled or, depending on the crime, arrested. NO MASKS! Thank you for your attention to this matter," he wrote.

This announcement follows ongoing protests at several universities, including Columbia University and Barnard College, where tensions have remained high since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, 2023. That day, Hamas militants launched the deadliest Palestinian attack on Israel in history, prompting Israel to retaliate with its heaviest airstrikes on Gaza. The conflict has since resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of lives. A ceasefire agreement was reached in January after extensive mediation by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, but its implementation remains uncertain. In the meantime, campus protests have continued, with students demonstrating both in support of Israel and Palestine.

Trump's remarks come just a day after his administration announced a review of more than $50 million in federal contracts with Columbia University, citing the school’s "ongoing inaction in the face of relentless harassment of Jewish students." The Department of Education, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the U.S. General Services Administration are leading the review, with a focus on potential violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. Additionally, the federal government's Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism is examining over $5 billion in federal grant commitments to ensure compliance with federal regulations. Stop-work orders for Columbia’s $51.4 million in federal contracts are also being considered.

In response, Columbia University issued a statement affirming its commitment to combatting antisemitism and all forms of discrimination. "We are reviewing tonight's communication from the Department of Education, Department of Health and Human Services, and General Services Administration," the university said. "Columbia is fully committed to combatting antisemitism and all forms of discrimination, and we are resolute that calling for, promoting, or glorifying violence or terror has no place at our University.

The Hamas acolytes at Columbia University are handing out propaganda straight from the Hamas Media Office justifying October 7th

We look forward to ongoing work with the new federal administration to fight antisemitism, and we will continue to make all efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff."

Protests at Columbia last year saw students setting up encampments and occupying a campus building in response to the conflict. The recent wave of demonstrations reignited at Barnard College and City College in Manhattan, with students demanding the reinstatement of two peers expelled over an alleged bias incident. During one protest, a security guard was injured as demonstrators forced their way into a building.

Trump's stance aligns with previous actions he has taken on campus protests. During his presidency, he signed an executive order targeting antisemitism in higher education, which included measures to prosecute offenders and revoke visas for international students found guilty of antisemitic acts. The Federal Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism, created under that order, has since intensified its scrutiny of universities, announcing visits to 10 campuses where antisemitic incidents have been reported since October 2023.

Leo Terrell, Senior Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights and a leading member of the Task Force, stated that universities may have failed to protect Jewish students and faculty from discrimination, potentially violating federal law. He added that the Task Force intends to meet with university leadership, students, law enforcement, and community members to assess whether remedial action is necessary.

Oops! So much for Trump's promise to defend free speech as granted in our 2nd Amendment.... 😮

I thought it(freedom of speech) is in the 1st Amendment.

The 2nd, is the People's Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

So storming the Capitol with a view of overturning the results of a free and fair election (and then pardoning those who did it) is okay, but exercising your right to protest and demonstrate is not okay?

Another Marxist.  Don't have a clue.

Thank you for demonstrating America's sickest/most idiotic part of sociology.

Anyone and everyone you don't like, are automatically Communists/Marxists, in your world, aren't they?

Me, Leftist? You have pretty sick sense of humor.

Advisable to check my past posting.

And then, if you still believe so, you are Insanely Ultra Right Winger.  Or simply, so Dumb.

Sounds pretty much like Adloph Hitler quote.

He said that the knowledge corrupts people.

No wonder he is so keen to form alliance with Poo-tin, the 21st century Hitler; waging war of invasion for territorial gain, in the name of seeking "Buffer Zone".

What kind of language is this?

In Amerika, you must know the difference between "illegal protests" and "love fests".

For example, a totally peaceful protest in Lafayette Park is illegal if the fat POTUS wants to do a photo op in front of a nearby church holding an upside down Bible. Such illegal assembly calls for tear gas and stormtroopers beating the peaceniks.

In contrast, beating and bear spraying cops, smashing windows and doors, sh!tting on the floor of the Capitol, and erecting a gallows and threatening to hang the Vice President is both lawful and if some "lib" judge sentences you, you are a "hostage" and should be set free.

These Marxist leaning students and the Marxist spewing professors are not what we need in these schools.  YES cut their funding and stop the funding being received from Qatar and other Anti Israel countries.

Are you mistaking professors marking students work and students receiving their marks as something else?

I wonder what constitutes an ‘illegal protest’?

He read the OP, of course, he's simply being disingenuous to try to obfuscate.

Given what these kids are likely studying, kicking them out would probably make them smarter.

You mean, in terms of Street Wise?

A true smartness to survive in the actual world.

Yes, possibly. As they have to fully utilize their Inner Resources(incl brain and the whole body), often unlikely in a Luke Warm condition...
