Trump Threatens to Cut Federal Funding Over Campus Protests

Donald Trump has escalated his stance against pro-Palestinian demonstrations on college campuses, threatening to withdraw federal funding from universities that allow what he terms "illegal protests." In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared that all federal aid to such institutions would be halted, and he vowed to imprison "agitators" or deport them if they were foreign nationals. "American students will be permanently expelled or, depending on the crime, arrested. NO MASKS! Thank you for your attention to this matter," he wrote.

This announcement follows ongoing protests at several universities, including Columbia University and Barnard College, where tensions have remained high since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, 2023. That day, Hamas militants launched the deadliest Palestinian attack on Israel in history, prompting Israel to retaliate with its heaviest airstrikes on Gaza. The conflict has since resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of lives. A ceasefire agreement was reached in January after extensive mediation by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, but its implementation remains uncertain. In the meantime, campus protests have continued, with students demonstrating both in support of Israel and Palestine.

Trump's remarks come just a day after his administration announced a review of more than $50 million in federal contracts with Columbia University, citing the school’s "ongoing inaction in the face of relentless harassment of Jewish students." The Department of Education, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the U.S. General Services Administration are leading the review, with a focus on potential violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. Additionally, the federal government's Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism is examining over $5 billion in federal grant commitments to ensure compliance with federal regulations. Stop-work orders for Columbia’s $51.4 million in federal contracts are also being considered.

In response, Columbia University issued a statement affirming its commitment to combatting antisemitism and all forms of discrimination. "We are reviewing tonight's communication from the Department of Education, Department of Health and Human Services, and General Services Administration," the university said. "Columbia is fully committed to combatting antisemitism and all forms of discrimination, and we are resolute that calling for, promoting, or glorifying violence or terror has no place at our University.

The Hamas acolytes at Columbia University are handing out propaganda straight from the Hamas Media Office justifying October 7th

We look forward to ongoing work with the new federal administration to fight antisemitism, and we will continue to make all efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff."

Protests at Columbia last year saw students setting up encampments and occupying a campus building in response to the conflict. The recent wave of demonstrations reignited at Barnard College and City College in Manhattan, with students demanding the reinstatement of two peers expelled over an alleged bias incident. During one protest, a security guard was injured as demonstrators forced their way into a building.

Trump's stance aligns with previous actions he has taken on campus protests. During his presidency, he signed an executive order targeting antisemitism in higher education, which included measures to prosecute offenders and revoke visas for international students found guilty of antisemitic acts. The Federal Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism, created under that order, has since intensified its scrutiny of universities, announcing visits to 10 campuses where antisemitic incidents have been reported since October 2023.

Leo Terrell, Senior Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights and a leading member of the Task Force, stated that universities may have failed to protect Jewish students and faculty from discrimination, potentially violating federal law. He added that the Task Force intends to meet with university leadership, students, law enforcement, and community members to assess whether remedial action is necessary.

I bet that's  really what he wants. The more stupid and ignorant people become, a lot easier to trick and exploit them more. In case of his presidency, it  makes a perfect sense.

I thought it(freedom of speech) is in the 1st Amendment.

The 2nd, is the People's Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

Thanks for the correction. I have now changed it.

Just tax the endowments. That's what Trump promised to do.

D. Trump, doing his best to crack US-Free World relationship; both economically(tariff), and militarily(suggesting NATO pull out).

May not be the best businessman(his company bankrupted several times).

But as the foreign agent, truly doing a Remarkable Jobs, this fast, LOL.

R.Nixon was the first US president who was kicked out of his office.

And D,Trump is the first/only American head of state openly serving Rus interest.

Trump said he loves the uneducated masses. He’s doing his best to add a few million in that corner. And he also just gave the order to abolish the department of education.

So storming the Capitol with a view of overturning the results of a free and fair election (and then pardoning those who did it) is okay, but exercising your right to protest and demonstrate is not okay?

Thank you for demonstrating America's sickest/most idiotic part of sociology.

Anyone and everyone you don't like, are automatically Communists/Marxists, in your world, aren't they?

Me, Leftist? You have pretty sick sense of humor.

Advisable to check my past posting.

And then, if you still believe so, you are Insanely Ultra Right Winger.  Or simply, so Dumb.

Wonderful idea.  These students were not being educated anyway, they were being indoctrinated (to become lefties).

Its a cancer thats been spreading!

Those  Scarves that some wear are a  great  indicator of a ideology that sympathizes with Hamas freedom fighters! The Marxist community that protest on campus & streets ,divest from institutions and lift

up the oppressed people that have been colonized.

“At Harvard University, 34 pro-Palestinian student organizations published an open letter declaring that they held Israel “entirely responsible” for the massacre. A few days later, about 20 pro-Palestinian student groups at Columbia University signed a letter of solidarity that called to view “the actions of Palestinian fighters” in the context of what they called “the inhumane siege” imposed on them for 16 years.” At George Washington University, messages such as “Glory to our martyrs,” and “Free Palestine from the river to the sea,” were projected onto the walls of the campus”.

The truth, but you would not understand that as it is way over your head.

In Amerika, you must know the difference between "illegal protests" and "love fests".

For example, a totally peaceful protest in Lafayette Park is illegal if the fat POTUS wants to do a photo op in front of a nearby church holding an upside down Bible. Such illegal assembly calls for tear gas and stormtroopers beating the peaceniks.

In contrast, beating and bear spraying cops, smashing windows and doors, sh!tting on the floor of the Capitol, and erecting a gallows and threatening to hang the Vice President is both lawful and if some "lib" judge sentences you, you are a "hostage" and should be set free.

Are you mistaking professors marking students work and students receiving their marks as something else?

Read the OP, the evidence is all there, here's some more.....

Anti-Israel agitators are at it again, taking over a building at Barnard college and preventing students from attending classes and using the library.

You mean, in terms of Street Wise?

A true smartness to survive in the actual world.

Yes, possibly. As they have to fully utilize their Inner Resources(incl brain and the whole body), often unlikely in a Luke Warm condition...

I seriously doubt these are business or STEM students.  They have to actually study to get through their degrees.

Always mouthing Red Flag Words.

Favorite Quotation of  the lesser intellect.

In your world, anyone & everyone unfavored becomes Leftist.

Even the owner of the dog keeps barking for minutes in your neighborhood.

Such as Social Engineering?

I am also too far too familiar with that sort of things.

It is the sick sort of idea that tries to change the world  to the advantage of  particular political faction/some weird minorities.

Often through the imprinting from the young age.

The perfect example is,  the Art of Responsibility Transfer, in case of the dangerous unforgivable criminals.

Blaming something else, instead of the Bad Guys themselves.

While writing this, some Pea Brains still call me Marxist LOL.

Even though schooling might come with that crap, still not nice to keep people from the whole educational opportunities.

This world isn't perfect.

Both good and bad exist on this Earth.

The most important thing is the balance.

Not too right or left; happy medium.
