If you got shipwrecked and had to live like Tom Hanks in Castaway would you still be happy? If not then you are only content, IMO.

That would be like heaven for me.

I've always been happy with what I have/had. Nice houses, wife, kids, big TV, hifi, games consoles, etc. When in the UK had as much sex as all the other guys I knew ...... almost none!   Nev

You can distract your mind with the external things, it wont make you younger though

I think there is happiness, i dont think it can be achieved as long as youre a slave to impulse. Money is just numbers on a screen, sex is just a membrane creating friction and ejecting mucus. People need a purpose greater than just from external things

And neither will you ever be as you're identified with your mind, as is 99.9999% of the population.

Ditch the past and future... but not McDonalds.

I read this blog post many years ago, and still turn to it now and again:

Don’t Die With Your Music Still In You

"...So what is the point of a life dedicated to the acquisition and protection of stuff? All of your money and possessions can be taken away from you by forces outside your control.

"What are you truly risking if you go after your dreams? If your current lifestyle is unfulfilling, then you’re starting broke, no matter how much money you have."

For me, I am constantly striving for more.

I'm never happy with what I have, my current situation, how many women I have or how much I have in the bank.

I always want more..

This, I feel, is the key to success.

We only get what we will settle for.

If I didn't have this mindset, coming from a relatively poor family with limited opportunities - I would probably have ended up being a cleaner in Mcdonalds.

Sure, I may be content, but I would still be a cleaner in Mcdonalds...

"There is no such thing as happiness."

Why do I get the feeling we will eventually read about you as a "webfact" side-note after you join the Pattaya Sky Diving Club?

I'd rather die in a warm mansion, dressed in an armani suit, surrounded by gorgeous chicks than homeless, cold & alone on the street...

bob.

I can't see how dying in an Armani suit is any better than dying in a comfortable track suit.

By the time you are dying, how interested will you be in gorgeous chicks?

Happiness is an aspiration. Contentment is coming to terms with one's situation.

I'm amazed how you find the time striving for all this success so hard to bless us all with 78 threads a day?

Especially since you have to manage your bitcoin and shares portfolio.

Chasing pleasure like the real or fictional Bob will never bring happiness. It becomes an addiction.

The feeling of happiness is a by product of living a good life. For the vast majority that's a strong combination of friends, family, faith (even if only in humanity) and work ( anything that contributes to another, even cooking a meal)

It may be the key to success, but it certainly won't lead to happiness.  🤷‍♂️

If the choice is to have a lot of "success", but be stressed out and miserable; or to live a humble lifestyle, but feel happy and contented, I think most sensible people would choose the latter.

A lot of "successful" people are very unhappy, probably because they have something missing in their life that they use the success to try and replace, but they can never really replace it, so they're always unhappy.

If someone were to feel like that, it's likely that something happened to them in their childhood that means they can either never be happy, or only feel happy when they experience some sort of overpowering external force, like earning a vast some of money or having a crowd of people cheer for them, but that feeling quickly goes away when the moment has passed.  They also feel far more deflated when something happens where they are made to feel inferior to someone else, which a regular person could likely shrug off.

Wanna know what brings happiness bob.  Contentment.  Being at ease with life and the way things are in the moment.

Wanna know what creates Hell?  Unending wants.  Go out, buy a 10,000 THB dinner, drink the best booze, take designer drugs, have an orgy, wake up with a massive hangover, rinse, repeat - because - all the hedonism didn't slake those wants one bit.  You're still consumed by wants.  So to end the way I started...

...how can you be at ease with a world that is so full of un-ease??

bob.

For 1/4 of the world population daily affordable food and a stable roof over their heads would mean happyness.

Rich people striving to be richer usually are more stressed than poorer folk.  High blood pressure, anger issues, diabetes from eating rich food etc... good luck to them.

I'm relatively poor.  Without the trappings of fast cars, fast women, consumer goods etc, I'm very happy with my life.

Why do I need more than 2 pairs of shoes (one pair for running and one pair for everything else)?  I only have 2 feet.

Why do I need many shirts and trousers?  I only have one body to clothe.

Why do I need gold rings, bracelets and so on?  I don't need to impress anyone and surely to my God no woman would love me without the $$$ (all 3 of my ex-wives were only in it for the $$$ from me).

I'm not a Buddhist, but following a modest lifestyle without consumer goods has helped me to be stress-free and relatively healthy. (It also saves on checked-in luggage costs!)

Have you been reading Schopenhauer again?  "It is difficult to find happiness within oneself but it is impossible to find it anywhere else"
