Dog Barking Drama: When Neighbourly Conflicts Turn Threatening

A contentious dispute between neighbours has garnered widespread attention after a woman received a threatening letter about her dog's barking. The letter, posted on March 11 in the Adorable Dog Lovers Facebook group, accused her of allowing her pet to disturb the community. The neighbour ominously warned that if the barking didn't cease, they would kill the dog.

 

The letter urged the owner to be considerate of the community's peace. The online post quickly attracted a variety of reactions, with some advising the owner to evaluate her dog's behaviour, while others suggested involving the police due to the threat.

 

Several commenters offered alternatives, such as dog training to reduce excessive barking, or mediating the issue with building management to explore solutions.

 

 

In response, the woman clarified on her Facebook page that her dog does not bark persistently but responds to stimuli like passing people or other dogs. She assured that she regularly checks with nearby residents and has received feedback indicating minimal disturbance.

 

The owner acknowledged her dog's barking but argued the letter's claims were exaggerated. She called for a measured approach to the situation, advocating for dialogue and understanding to prevent further escalation. The incident highlights the challenges in balancing pet ownership with community harmony and the importance of seeking amicable solutions to neighbourhood disputes, reported The Thaiger.

Dogs bark regularly near my place.

Always, when a 'stranger' is in the area.

That stranger can be a person, another dog, a snake or whatever.

25 years of living here, doors and windows always open, safe because barking dogs keep it that way.

Barking dogs are annoying but that's what they're hardwired to do when protecting property. Living in those Thai housing projects can be a nightmare if just a few neighbors have noisy dogs but what can be done? Ban dogs or move are really the only two options.

 

The one thing you can do to be a good neighbor is restrain the dog when a person comes to the door instead of letting it continue to bark, or you can try this method which shuts up my dog.

10 yrs ago we rented a house in a moobahn village which has rows of 50 concrete ugly houses with small yard area. 

 

Next to us they have 5 dogs barking all day. At night she took them inside which was a relief. But during the day was a nightmare

 

Across the road they had a dog barking at midnight thereabouts every night. We got all the neighbours together and went to talk to mr and mrs middle class inconsiderate thais. I was the ring leader. He gave me a real bad look and almost looked as if he was going to attack me. That night there was no noise. The second night onwards it was back to normal. They didnt give a <deleted>. He used to give me many more bad looks

 

Also 5 houses down they had 2 small crazy screaming dogs. They had them in cages all day in the heat under the carport. Ive never heard anything like that. 

 

We gave notice and moved on. 

 

Lesson... NEVER live in a moobahn village with rows of houses occupied by selfish middle class thais in Isan.

Thailand is rife with these and yes they're terrible. Look at the map anywhere in Chiang Mai and you'll find these everywhere. 🤮

… or they bark incessantly because that’s what they do. Yours is a typical ‘dog person’ response. What a world to live in! When they recreationally bark like that, they are a menace to everyone bar the owner. I’d bet my bottom dollar that most people in the vicinity of that noisy mutt are pissed off. Thailand’s stray dog problem and relationship with dogs in general (I.e keep them caged, let them intentionally bark all day, biting kids, causing road accidents etc) is third world and one of the downsides to living here. 
 

There’s one by us, albeit probably 100m away, that stays chained up in the back garden and can recreationally yap ALL day. It’s disturbing from a high up condo so must be a nightmare for next door neighbors. Not really the dog’s fault, it is squarely on the selfish owners. Big fines should be dished out to get these selfish people to change their ways or you’ll have more of the above… people taking it into their own hands and killing their dogs.

 

The way it goes in other countries is you get a warning from the authorities followed by a fine, then if it continues you lose the dog. This is how it works in a civilised society to prevent people’s lives from being disturbed by others. Putting up with it because it’s ’good for security’ lol is head in the clouds Thaier than Thai nonsense.

Yes it does. The guy might love dogs for all you know. I do. But when they are allowed to bark all day, it is not cool. There is a massive difference between incessant yapping and occasionally barking at a stranger.

All dogs bark, my dog is no worse than the others or the lie about the mutt only barking at threats.

When the mrs was head of the village committee a resident came round with an anonymous letter asking him to do something about his dogs barking all day. He said they were just small dogs and he kept them in. When I went up to look at his house the problem was obvious, he was lying. There were 2 dobermans in a cage outside barely big enough for them and they were going crazy. I have every sympathy for the victims of selfish dog owners, which most of them are, but none for the annoying pests if they do get done away with. SIL had a neighbour with over 30 dogs in a small house in the next soi, the noise was incredible, the owner claimed it was his right to have as many stinking annoying mutts as he wanted!

that owner is brain dead and irresponsible.  He should be fined and made to remove 29 of them. 

 

SIL can tell him it's her right as a citizen to live in a peaceful environment without 30 dogs next door.

I think Thais, in general, have no idea about dogs. In 12 years Ive rarely seen anyone walk their dog for exercise. Only once I think. 

 

The other day I was at phrom pong bts. I saw a lady with 2 small ratty dogs in a pram. she started walking towards Empshere. She could have let the neurotic dogs out to walk that 500m. No. Too stupid. Dogs were whining being stuck in the pram. Totally clueless and stupid

If a neighbor's dog is ruining your life in any way don't complain. The neighbor will not agree with you and do something about it. Instead you will become the hated one. The neighbor loves his filthy stinking noisy animal more than you, especially so if you're a farang, and the problem will continue. Then you can't do anything further because if the dog suddenly became ill and dies they will immediately suspect you and call the police as you have identified yourself by complaining. So don't ever complain, deal with it yourself.

Somebody near us takes doggie out for exercise- they tie it to the back of a bike then ride around!

My good friend back home had a small dog, one of those that will bark at anything.

 

So since he was in a civilized country, instead of blaming people for being annoyed by the sound of a barking dog, he bought one of those 'bark collar', which controlled the useless barking noise.

What is even more bothersome is that all these owners of barking dogs, selfish as they are all, (or mostly), were taught to repeat ad nauseam all these annoying sounds and gestures,  that are meant that they do possess empathy, politeness, and respect.
