After they pay for the damage they have caused i hope?

Imo the money the Thai government charges from arriving tourists should also help to cover cases like this.

It would show Thailand is trying to take care of the people who bring money into the country.

Yes,i know,

Agreed...  There is talk (once again) of the 300 baht Tourist tax - it is these examples where some of that tax would be well spent...   'looking after tourists who've met with unfortunate circumstances'.

Regarding the travel insurance: It seems unclear if he has insurance, but is unable to 'clarify' so due to his condition.

This highlight the need to not only have travel or health care insurance, but also to carry around a card with you.

Since Covid - most insurance companies have refused to issue a physical card - something I have fought with them over and always end of up getting one made.

Then you are naive.

A person can say they have insurance, but without evidence of a policy number, or contact number or insurer name, the coverage cannot be confirmed.

Sure, so he would have talked to nobody, and the relatives have no clue what insurance company he have used. Neither does he have phone banking that he paid the insurance with, so you that way can find the name of the company.

My Wife knows which policy I have becase we share the policy.

However, I can understand a situation whereby someone takes out travel insurance, then omits to carry proof of that insurance (a card) or tell anyone about it...      Its going to be very difficult for anyone to find out who the policy is with until he wakes up.

His family won't have access to his banking records through which (we assumed) he paid the insurance.

Neither is it likely they'll have access to his e-mails with confirmation of insurance.

Again - for anyone who has insurance, carry proof of it in your wallet.

If they actually spent the 300 baht tax on incidents like this I would be in favor of it. Imagine being a fresh tourist in Thailand trying to cross the road and not knowing Thailand is filled with lawless drivers and the getting hit. Even worse Rama II comes down on you due to lax safety standards.

Just crossing the road, being in a taxi without seatbelts, being in a tuktuk that has an accident etc etc...  stepping in a pothole in the pavement (sidewalk), getting electrocuted by a light pole etc etc - the list is endless due to slack safety standards...

... And Yes... I completely agree, any 300 baht Tourist Tax should also be put towards covering the costs of any such incidents....  But also towards making tourist area's safer in the first place.

Sounds he has at least got travel insurance - that's good

Shouldn't the Russians or their insurance be paying?

Kick these rotten scumbags out of Thailand now for gods sake.

Revoke all visas for Russian nationals.

They are nothing but trouble!

You cannot drop your guard when crossing the road here. You need 100% focus at all times, and a couple of additional pairs of eyes. All tourists should be warned of this before traveling.

Absolutely.  Have a good look around, wait until no one is coming, then look all around you constantly while crossing quickly.

Sadly, it would be very difficult to warn tourists of the dangers of Thailand without ruining its image as a tourist destination.  (Roads, violence, scams, women, etc.)

And while they (the Thai government) kick out people with low IQ, bigots, ayholes...   anyone they don't like the look of....

... Lets start making sweeping generalisations on which to enact bigotry... :whistling:

I was crossing Sukhuvmit Rd in Bangkok to other night...  Extremely cautious as usual...

It was about 2:30am...    light traffic...

... I heard it before I saw it...  a screaming engine....    then a powerful motorcycle blew past at breakneck speed, easily over 120kmh, possibly faster...

...  within a split second he was gone and already 100's of meters down the road, I was waiting for the sound of a chaos, a smash.. but it never happened - I'd be surprised if the fool is still alive.

(no idea of nationality of course)....  BUT.. my point here is... So many motorcyclist's just blow through these crossings as if they don't exist...    Car drivers usually (in BKK) at least are so much better, but motorcyclists just see to ignore most of the traffic laws, whatever the nationality.

Arrest the Russian, keep him, until he pays the bill!!! Send the victim home when possible to hospital care there.

A good solution...

Though - was this at a pedestrian crossing ?

Did the Brit step out without looking, or was the Russian speeding and riding illegally ?

From the story (unless I've missed something) its impossble to know who is at fault, but I've seen both...

a) pedestrians run out into the path of a Motorcycle - the incident most certainly the pedestrians fault.

b) Motorcylists speeding across a pedestrian crossing and hitting a pedestrian - most certainly the motorcyclist fault.

So... Who was actually at fault here ?

Hope the Brit fully recovers, hope they sort out his insurance and that fully covers everything.

But I would also hope that blame isn't being thrown at the Russian just because of his nationality.

Everyone I know here doesn't want them here..

We must all be bigots then...

Are the EU also bigots for revoking their visa rights?

think about it....

I have never heard of an insurance, that must be confirmed by the victim?

Perhaps the family do not know any of his travel insurance details, without which any claim is, obviously, impossible.

You people just - don't - get - it, do you ?

Do ANY of you recall seeing this in ANY local news ? It supposedly happened just  a couple days ago (Saturday) - in Phuket of course, "the Hub of Brits ending up in the hospital and needing GoFundMe donations because of problems with their insurance".

Doesn't appear in the local news - until it's cut/pasted from a British Tabloid site where they're already got a GoFundMe set up which was literally set up within hours of the alleged accident.

Despite him supposedly not being able to provide his insurance details - somehow "someone" was able to contact his relatives seemingly within hours.
And within a day they had a GoFundMe set up, sold their story (er "told their story") to the DailyMail and were on a plane to Thailand.

Tell me, does this look like a guy who has "multiple skull fractures, fractured ribs, a broken nose and bleeding on the brain" ?
injury.jpg.861da5d28c4157b5f1d44bac3f2678e4.jpg

Remember, he was so badly injured they "didn't think he'd make it" and claim they're being charged £10,000 (435,000 baht - per day).

And despite them supposedly knowing the names and nationalities of the other people involved, they don't appear in the news either for some strange reason despite (allegedly) being arrested.

Yet the Nation had no problem reporting about 3 Brit tourists who hit a motorcycle with their truck and then fled the scene.
https://www.nationthailand.com/news/general/40047403

But this accident (and alleged arrests) involving Brits and Russians apparently wasn't newsworthy in Thailand ?

Where they literally report on ANY crime or accident involving a foreigner ?

I know a guy in Bristol that has nothing else to do all day. Lets see if Mr Eury is still in Thailand.

A once-idyllic holiday on the alluring shores of Phuket has turned into a distressing ordeal for British restauranteur Ricky Eury. The 39-year-old is now facing a critical battle for survival in a Thai hospital after a devastating road accident.

On Saturday, March 15, Eury was struck by a motorcycle while crossing a bustling street in the popular tourist destination. The motorcycle was driven by Russian tourists Sergei Medvedev and his wife Svetlana, who have since been arrested. The encounter left Eury with severe injuries, including multiple skull fractures, broken ribs, a shattered nose, and life-threatening brain haemorrhage.

Eury's family and loved ones are maintaining a vigil at his bedside at Bangkok Hospital Phuket. His parents, George and Annette, were shattered by the news and flew to Thailand immediately, along with his girlfriend Hannah Ryan and brother Joey. They were confronted with the terrifying possibility that Ricky might not make it through, recounts Hannah, also 39.

The incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a dream retreat for Eury, who had been visiting Phuket since February for Thai-boxing training. Known for managing the award-nominated Gorilla Thai Kitchens in Bristol, Keury embraced fitness and the active lifestyle that the island offered.

Miracles seemed far in the shadows as Eury clung to life in the hospital's intensive care unit. Yet, against all odds, he survived the crucial 36 hours post-accident, a testament to his physical strength, says his father.

"The doctors say his fitness will aid his recovery. But we know the future remains uncertain," George candidly shared.

Eury has recently regained consciousness, but his memory is hazy, says his mother Annette. Despite the overwhelming odds, Ricky's spirit shows signs of resilience, though he continually asks the same questions, a testament to the long road ahead.

Compounding their distress is the lack of immediate access to Eury's travel insurance details, leaving the family with looming medical bills. They have already shelled out over 420,000 Thai Baht (£10,000) after Ricky was unable to confirm his insurance status due to the extent of his injuries.

Solomon Wilkinson, a friend of Ricky's, has taken an initiative to raise funds through a GoFundMe page to combat the spiralling costs.

Facing an indeterminate recovery journey, Eury's family vows to stay by his side for as long as needed. "Ricky comes first. We’re living day by day," affirms George, a retired fisheries manager from Devon.

Despite the uncertainty, the flickers of progress seen in Ricky provide some solace. Medical professionals remain cautiously optimistic, though it is evident that healing will require considerable time and patience. As they face the challenges ahead, Ricky's family is fortified by the small victories and the undying hope for a full recovery, reported The Thaiger.

Very easy to contact family.  UK passports have an "Emergency Contact" section.  It's not unlikely that the police also let the embassy know in view of the seriousness of his condition.

We DON'T know ANYTHING other than what was in the DAILYMAIL article - which was suspicious in the amount of details they had - and what was left out.

Pretty odd that within hours of the "accident" the family back home knows who supposedly caused the accident (their names and nationalities and even the type of motorcycle the Russian was allegedly driving).
And they were able to tell all that to the DailMail - after they'd already set up a GoFundMe (to make sure the link appears in the article of course) - and get it online within a day of the accident ?

When it looks and smells like a pile of dog **** on the sidewalk - then it probably is.

And what is this now- the FIFTH story from the DailyMail in the last month about a Brit in a Phuket Hospital and there's a problem with their insurance and they need a GoFundMe.

I've sent a message to my buddy in Bristol to see if he'll pop by this guy's place and wish him well.

Gawd...   Literally, they do not report every foreigner-involved crime or accident.
