reflecting on tensions between locals and expats in the region

An inflammatory statement supported by absolutely nothing in the article. As for the guy he's simply an idiot and more than likely a full blown alcho (conjecture).

I tend to agree.  The media itself is insinuating Thais and expats are in a major conflict, a position which in itself seeks to raise "tensions" on the English speaking side.  It is inflammatory.  It's an isolated incident where some drunk foreigners act like drunk idiots.  I've seen drunk Thais acting like idiots as well in the past, but they understand the boundaries of their own culture.
Drunkenness leading to idiotic behavior bypasses race and culture.

Why is it outrage from Thais when they do far worse! Always outrage from Thais except Mai pen rai when they’re own doing it!

not that I’m condoning what he did & should be arrested & fined

Nothing new here, as it's a common scene in Buriram, fat old dirty semi-retarded farangs who like belittle Thai people when they're drunk.  I'm always amazed at the patience of Thai people, because back home these drunks are usually quiet as a door mouse.

Buriram and Korat are places no expat seems to really want to live but they get brought there by their Thai wife. I'm sure there's a lot of really miserable sods there waiting out their end.

I lived there (Korat) for three years, but I worked there.  It's a nice enough place, but I prefer mountains over the flatness of that region. There IS an expat community there and I would not generalizes it as a bunch of "miserable bastards there waiting out their end."   The city (mueang) has a lot to offer as does the surrounding area (Phimai, Khao Yai, other parks and historical artifacts).

So basically, as someone who did live there?  Really?  Nonsense.

So some us get overly agitated when surrounded by non-Brits as it appears this lad has and it has set him off and he gave few of the non-Brits a bit of a spray.

So, WTF is he doing here?

At least Buriram has a racetrack... what's Korat got, other than a Terminal 21? As for Phimai, there's b*&&er all there but a Tesco Lotus and an old Khmer temple. No wonder he was grumpy! LOL

The plank needs to move somewhere a little more lively. Phimai isn't for foreigners looking for a bawdy night on the tiles!

yeah but I'm guessing there are lots of miserable stuck ones that didn't actually choose to live there. I really don't think many expats explored all of Thailand and decided Korat was their favorite. Pretty sure they got dragged there by some women. Right?

When I was living in Germany, I was talking with my Gasthaus owner/bartender friend and he said to me "We like you Americans! You come and drink, get drunk and have a good time. But we do not like the Brits. They come and drink, get drunk and FIGHT! I think it is a part of their culture...". Also the fact that we Americans were guests in German and needed permission to be there, the UK did not. They were a occupying force from the end of WWII until 1990 when the wall came down. I was there when it did...

stupid drunken idiot  ....  and it doesn't matter one hoot what his nationality is,  the story is about a drunken galoot making trouble.

did the cops arrive too late, had the man and his party already left before the cops arrived  ?

It kinda does matter! This is yet another story of a Western foreigner going out in public thinking the world revolves around them!

I think it also depends on where someone lived before. If he came from a sh*thole, Korat will be heaven.

no ....it doesn't matter if he's from the UK, US .. EU or wherever .....  it's about a drunk farang causing a disturbance.

And that's why drunk people are not even permitted to enter the establishment.
While the Brit's behaviour is inexcusable, the restaurant's owner/staff have learned how to operate a business to keep drunks outside.

When it comes to us expat, nationality doesn’t matter. But in our home country we always demand that nationality of any culprit are named. Strange?

Just your typical foreigner in Thailand these days.

The worst thing about Thailand, the only negativity for me are some of the bloody foreigners.

Does every one of your posts have to be ones deriding foreigners? I'll ask this question again. How many foreigners do you actually know here and how many act this way, seeing you think it's just your "typical" foreigner? One of the  worst things about Thailand, and any other country for that matter, is those who talk bad about people in general, lumping all of them into one category instead of seeing all of them as individuals. Brown nosing isn't going to get you any followers, as those you stick up for look at you the same as they do other foreigners. You're an outsider no matter how long you live here to many locals. If you hate other foreigners so much why visit this forum? I'm sure there are other Thai forums you could join to complain about foreigners there, although they might look at you as a weirdo.

I go out for a drink or ten 4-6 nights a week.

I encounter these types probably at least once or twice a week on average.

Most of the times they are Brits, but not always.

I think it might be related to all the migrants in the UK now causing trouble, people are much more aggressively racist than 15-20 years ago. We are always complaining about them so they are always on our mind.

So some us get overly agitated when surrounded by non-Brits as it appears this lad has and it has set him off and he gave few of the non-Brits a bit of a spray.

His wife probably hears it all day how stupid the Thai people are.

If this Britt guy is xenophobic, as you

intimated why  does he go to a foreign country. I think his problem is he thinks he a class above other people.

I pity his Thai  wife

Although a disproportionate number of these louts are Brits, I hate to say.

Not sure about that. With regards to Phimai. Rita's bar opposite the Clock Tower can get fairly lively on a Fri/Sat evening. This Clown doesn't frequent it.

As guests in this country the very least that we can do is show a consistent level of respect to the local people, this kind of behavior is never justified. Never, ever.

Agree. One of the best comments re. this matter

I'm sure you are the type of foreigner I'm talking about.

Don't you have a life, get a hobby, if you need some money I will send you, maybe buy yourself a bicycle or a golf membership. Try to stay away from your warrior keyboard

You always annoy me with your comments, have you noticed I have NEVER replied to any of your posts, I disagree with you on all your thoughts, I keep scrolling.

Explain what you're talking about then. I'm not a drunkard who starts trouble with anyone, let alone here. Everyone who's alive has a life, as that's a typical teenage response from those who aren't aware of how stupid that remark is. I have many hobbies, hunting, fishing, gym, music, movies, travel and doing things with my family, so I'm guessing another hobby would be quite much.

You can send me money if you'd like, as I wouldn't refuse a donation from someone who thinks they're above others while actually being beneath them.  I annoy you because you are always downgrading foreigners, and I stick up for them, as we are the minority here and need others we can relate to. You disagree with me because you either don't understand what I'm saying, or are too full of yourself and actually think you're better than other foreigners here. You aren't.

Like I suggested. if you need to talk bad about foreigners here, join another forum, as your comments are usually met with disdain, others seeing you as someone who dislikes foreigners for whatever reason you invented, and prefer sticking up for locals, even if they are acting wrong. You're not alone, as there are a few others here who also are brown nosers.
