They made the tariff announcement after the stock market closed.  Futures for tomorrow are way, way down.

Not much of a surprise here really, he has decimated the countries that might ship in goods from China through the back door.

Large scale manufacturing requires billions in capital investment.

Who is going to be nuts enough to invest in a country with an unstable leader and a polarized nation?

And the time to get permits, contracts for building and even the supplies needed to build a manufacturing plant.  It couldn't be done in Trump's term even if someone had the funds to do it - maybe Musk but I bet he doesn't do it either as his fortune now is drying up at a fast rate.  So much so that now Trump is telling his close advisors that Musk will be gone shortly!

how much does Thailand charge on any imported car, NOT the ones from China ... they have their pockets full of cash, the ones that will hurt are the consumers

I think he just wants Australia to drop their tariffs right? Even if there's a surplus why should the government be charging American companies extra to import products. Australian consumers would appreciate it too.

Australia has no tariffs on US products cobber.  Zip, zero, zilch.   Australian consumers don’t pay a tax on any imported US products.

Whinge whinge. If Trump cured cancer still whinge.

If there has ever an american potus that spends more time whining than trump i do not know who it would be...he whines that the election was rigged he whines about unfair it is that he is charged with crimes he whines because biden is too old and too incompetent but also whines about how biden rigged an election and left no evidence he whines about how america is a <deleted> hole country he whines when he has to go out in the rain he whines about every news cast that does not say enough good about him he whines non stop and his magic maga brigade whines along with him about how very awful america is while they sit in nice homes with a couple of nice cars in the driveway and  several 65 inch tvs to watch fox "news" help direct them to whine more and more.

It is nothing but whining..it is all so unfair for poor little trust fund bone spur trump who was born a white american male with a massive pile of $ and a headstart on life that billions upon billions of people around the world can only dream of having.

He is not the Lion King.  He is the Whine King.

Thailand should drop the 300% import tax for cars.

It wouldn't matter.  Almost no Thais want or can afford any of the cars made mostly in the US, so even if the import tax were zero, it wouldn't help the trade deficit.

Sure but why can't Thailand drop their tariffs then? I'm hearing lots of good reasons why the US should't be in a trade war with Thailand but no reasons why Thailand can't simply play fair.

What are the  Thai tariffs applied to and do they really impact  US sales into Thailand?

What are the Thai tariffs hurting from the USA?

Let's use automobiles. Do you know any Thais who want to buy a US  automobile? Does the US even manufacture vehicles in the USA that have the steering column set up for Thailand?

I am all for Thailand getting any of its tariffs that are unfair. Some are likely to be  outdated and no longer needed, but I don't know which tariffs are hurting US trade. Do you?

A generational high was Dec 2024.

1929-1954...the Dow finally hit a new high

1989-2024....the Nikkei finally hit a new high.

Lucky you're 22 years old and can afford to wait.

Finally, I agree with you. Yep, Japan 35 years for the market to recover.  The USA was 25 but with intermediate wars.

Just my advice to another, who is probably much closer to 22 than I am.  But I can't afford to wait.

Investors know now, and most don't panic when he opens his mouth. Too many lost big when he spoke his last term. I picked up some Walmart Mexico at 19-20/share.. Now, big investors know what is going on. This stuff is fun to read but pointless to me... Best of luck to everyone in Thailand.

Americans will simply not buy products from Thailand. Thai businesses will be forced to either shut down or move to the US

I see your grasp of basic economic principles is as tenuous as your grasp of politics.

This isn't an answer. You can't know who from which country wants to buy what but we DO know when that times comes Thailand is not being fair. This is  a matter of principle too.

US companies are having to pay the Thai government taxes. How about no? screw them.

OK, then it makes no sense to me. I'd like to hear an explanation from the Trump team on this one too.

It's not based on tariffs alone.  Look at the fancy board the president is holding up.

The list of evildoers has a column entitled "Tariffs Charged to the US" and in little letters he hopes you won't notice "including Currency Manipulation and Trade Barriers."

That way the numbers can be whatever he deems them to be!

He's a MAGAgician!

No doubt you'll be taking your $billions and buying up US Treasury securities to fund the 30% of the deficit currently funded by foreigners.

Yessiree, let America fend for itself.

Not at all. Its going to get ugly for all of us and many of us welcome the reset.

Shifting to where the U.S. does the low value grunt work and China takes over the high value tech and services.

In Ttump's vulgar vernacular, he thinks he has all the cards but that is arrogant delusional buffoonery. The entire world will simply dump the U.S.

The damage he's doing is PERMANENT.

Quite understandable, see for example the price that you pay for a Ford Ranger in the USA, compared to the price that you pay for the same car in Thailand.

Double >++

So 49% doesn't seem that excessive, if it's similar with other imported goods.

It just seems that Thailand already had tariffs in place for a long time but hasn't talked about or hasn't been in focus of the mainstream media like these new reciprocal tariffs announcements.

Yes, perhaps because we were making money off the rest of the world and there were other considerations taken into account. Those are now dismissed as more important than, the motivation to maximize profits. Popcorn at the ready.

It's a tax?

I guess so.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/we-now-know-the-full-extent-of-trumps-reciprocal-tariffs-theyre-huge-232020114.html

We now know the full extent of Trump's reciprocal tariffs. They’re huge.

If import purchases stayed the same, that would raise the tariff bill to about $960 billion, making it an $880 billion tax hike paid by American businesses and consumers.

“It’s the biggest tax hike on Americans since the 1940s,” trade expert Inu Manak of the Council on Foreign Relations told Yahoo Finance on April 2. “The only thing these tariffs are going to do is increase costs.”

Gonna hurt US consumers more than anyone.
“plundered and stolen from”

lol. He has no clue about economics. The US has benefitted hugely in price and diversity from everyone that sells to them. They can’t make most of what they buy in.

Where are you from certainly your not an American. The US can make anything. Most of you EUers and Aussies don’t seem to know much about history. When we were saving your bacon from the Japanese and Germans during WW11 the US was cranking out everything under the Sun.

We can do it again. If we pay a Tariff they should pay one also

nothing is free in this world anymore. Wake up

China will go bust the rest of the way with out the US consumer. Economists 101.

We are 90% of their exports.

Well done Mr President

Thailand's tariffs are a joke, they play at protecting there industries, see how they like it now, don't forget Donald, tax any small packages coming into the USA just as we have been hit with.

100% tax on imported motor bikes was one.

Hail to the Chief

From the Wall Street Journal:

"There will certainly be higher costs for American consumers and businesses. Tariffs are taxes, and when you tax something you get less of it. Car prices will rise by thousands of dollars, including those made in America.

Mr. Trump is making a deliberate decision to transfer wealth from consumers to businesses and workers protected from competition behind high tariff walls."

and

"Over time this will mean the gradual erosion of U.S. competitiveness. Tariffs that blunt competition invite monopoly profits while reducing the need to innovate. This is the story of the American steel and car industries in the 1950s and 1960s before global competition exposed their deficiencies."

https://www.wsj.com/opinion/donald-trump-liberation-day-tariffs-protectionism-82d0aa3a

This is exactly it. Instead of strengthening the American economy the tariff wall will weaken it. It's gonna be less to choose from and at higher prices.
