Thai Restaurant Sparks Outrage with Controversial 'Skinny Discount'

Chiang Mai Breakfast World has ignited a heated debate with its latest offering: a "skinny discount" for diners who can pass through progressively narrower metal bars before ordering. The unusual promotion went viral after British travel bloggers Amina and Alex shared a video on Instagram, featuring the challenge, which has since garnered millions of views.

The gimmick rewards diners with discounts ranging from 5% to 20% based on their ability to fit through gaps of varying widths. Those unable to pass through are required to pay full price. While some view the challenge as harmless fun, others have criticised it as discriminatory and a perpetuator of body-shaming.

Critics have called the stunt "fatphobic," with some worrying that it encourages unhealthy eating habits. The backlash hasn't deterred the restaurant, which continues to boast a high rating on TripAdvisor.

Comparisons have been drawn to similar initiatives in China, where a restaurant offered free meals and drinks to customers squeezing through a tiny 15-centimetre opening.

Opinion remains divided, with some defending the challenge as light-hearted entertainment, while others demand its abolition. The debate over the "skinny discount" continues to stir emotions, drawing global attention to the small Thai eatery far beyond scrambled eggs and morning coffee, reported The Thaiger.

Body shaming... this is the PC way to protect fat people? I'm overweight... Kids in Thailand poke my belly and say "baby". It's all good fun.

Soooooo many people need to get a life!

Abso-bloody-lutely 👍👍😊

If you don't like it, don't go there....or is that too complicated for these "woke", "politically correct" saddos?

I suggest that, with rigid bars, if you cant get your head through it doesn't matter what size your body is.

Great idea, bet there's not a lard ars×d yank that can pass through the full price gateway 😅🤣

So body builders weight lifters people who care about their health but can't fit threw are unhealthy just like the BMI test it's false assessments of people's health as you think .

It is not meant as any kind of serious medical test, just for fun and it seems to work.

If you don't want to you don't have to.

It is an advertising gimmick.

There’s some real miserable people on this planet that complain for anything, probably all the fatties

Good food?

Their restaurant, their choice. Don't like it eat elsewhere. To many people in this world are quick to whine about anything.

A bit on the expensive side for me and German , I used to go around the corner to the Maddog plus I often used to have breakfast about 4 PM when they had already closed

Fully agree with the restaurant's policy, it's their business they can do what they like, if they don't want fat customers good on them if they can continue to make money.

The fat man or women can always find somewhere else to eat.

It's not like there is a shortage of place's.

I think it is a great marketing ploy.

Just look at the traction it is getting here!

Imagine the fun of arriving with a group of friends and putting them through the "test". Hilarious!!

Don't you know/have an opinion?

Your supposed to be the expert on Thai food in all cities, according to your posts.

I have a few extra pound, but I also know a few people that when you look at them you would say that they are under weight, but they can eat like no tomorrow

I have no idea where they put all the food.

so if restaurant give discount based on peoples size, then i am sure the restaurant will lose out big time.

25 years or so ago I was going to open a bar/club in Hong Kong (my third club, but the first I would have done without partners).

The concept was a place only for slim people, fatties not allowed.

I had a design concept where the entire front of the venue had floor to ceiling chrome poles, spaced just wide enough for a slim person to fit through, but no way for a fat person to get in.  For emergencies the poles could be moved to create a 6 foot wide opening.

Everyone I suggested the idea to (in Hong Kong) thought it was a great idea.

I didn't do it because I was offered a high paying job in Bangkok.  I always thought I'd go back to Hong Kong and open a new club one day.

They would loose money when a friend of mine goes to Chiang Mai.

She is 40 ish kilos.

Eats more then me and her husband put together.

Do not ask me how she does it.

Bulimia. Fingers down the throat?

The food better be very good to make this an issue.

I wish this would happen. Obese people make the passenger(s) beside them suffer for the whole (short-/long-haul) journey. I'd like to see them stuffed beside each other. Four in a row of four seats. Maybe then they'll think about eating just 1 hamburger a day instead of (10).

If you put all the fat people in 1 row the plane would probably fly in circles 😭🤣😭✈️

I think it’s brilliant !
world has gone to sensitive !!

That would backfire with a Thai friend I have... he's built like a stick of macaroni but could eat you out of house and home, then casually go next door and start again.

Ask him for a doggy bag. So you can participate 🤗

Great concept. I love it.

But what if they introduce blow-in-the-breathalysers? Who gets a discount then?
