"Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney seemed to admit that he was seething in the Oval Office Tuesday as President Donald Trump taunted him to his face about annexing his country.

When a reporter asked after the sit-down what was going through his head while he listened to Trump, Carney had an acerbic answer.

“Well, thank you—I guess—for your question,” Carney began. “I am glad you could not tell what was going through my mind.”"

Strange how he praised Trump in the first few minutes of the meeting

Perhaps he knew that Trump was instrumental in getting him installed

I am really not sure that there is any point Mr Carney or Canada engaging with Mr Trump.

 

If you take his threats to take over Canada at face value, then he has turned the US into a hostile power; all that Canada can do is wait until he moves, concentrate on building alliances and then frame an appropriate response.

 

If he is trolling, then just ignore him.

The US is out biggest trade partner and biggest export market. 80% of our crude oil goes to the US.  It will take years to rearrange the trade loci and build the necessary infrastructure to correct this.

I am hoping you are right.  If we see 2008 Carney and not 2020 Carney, Canada will have a prayer.  

Not surprised the meeting went well. First of all, Trump simply hated Trudeau- Justin represented everything Trump abhors. Plus, Carney has academic pedigree, which Trump respects. He is also rich, which Trump respects. Ditto for being a banker. And of "a certain age"- not a young smarmy kid.

I saw something months ago about Canada (I think it was even bipartisan) looking to establish export facilities on your east coast to greatly increase your ability to export petroleum products to Europe. Is that something that is likely to happen?

I am waiting for Russia to declare that they are taking back Alaska because they were cheated in the negotiation.

It is a great idea but difficult to do. The province of Quebec is very very pro "clean" energy and is reluctant to allow a pipeline through their territory.  Then there are the natives to pacify/bribe....

Another line to the west coast, to supply Asia, would be easier. Best of all would be to build refineries to turn our own crude oil into usable products, THEN ship them overseas. But the previous government stood in the way of all that for a decade. 

I have to confess that Carney has been a pleasant surprise up to now. I am a died in the wool Conservative and was dreading a continuation of the previous Trudeau government's policies. Fingers crossed...
