Health Six Dead as Covid Cases Surge in Thailand

Thailand is on high alert as Covid-19 cases spike, with six tragic deaths reported last week. Health professionals are concerned by the resurgence, as Dr Thira Woratanarat of Chulalongkorn University highlighted in a Facebook post.

 

According to the Department of Disease Control (DDC), infections surged to 16,607 between May 4 and May 10, up from 14,680 the previous week.

 

Dr Thira's warnings are substantiated by the DDC report, contradicting earlier claims by the Public Health Ministry suggesting that the situation was under control. The spike in cases and fatalities calls for vigilant public health response as medical experts closely monitor the trajectory of the virus.

 

Dr Yong Poovorawan, a virology expert from Chulalongkorn University, echoed concerns about the rapid spread of the new Covid-19 subvariants. Despite their increased transmissibility, these strains seemingly cause mild symptoms and are treatable like other respiratory illnesses.

Dr Yong highlighted that these new variants mutate swiftly, complicating vaccine efficacy due to immune imprinting – where the body's immune system is less responsive to newly evolved strains.

 

The new strains of Covid-19 present a challenge, as existing vaccines primarily target older variants. This has led to a strategic decrease in vaccine procurement for hospitals, amidst assertions that patients are being managed like those with common respiratory conditions, negating the need for special quarantine measures.

 

As Thai authorities grapple with the rising numbers, the public is advised to maintain vigilance and adhere to safety protocols. The situation underscores the importance of monitoring subvariant developments and ensuring that the healthcare system is well-equipped to manage potential escalation.

 

The latest data presents a reality check for the nation's health policies, hinging on effective communication and adaptive strategies to safeguard public health.

Yes , and it was great ! Peace and quiet at last. No traffic jams , hotel rates halved , petrol cheaper , no queue at check out etc etc. My friends who live in Pattaya say it was the best time to be there. Good for the environment  too.

Sounds like a 99.97% survival rate to me.

 

Of course, the fat doctor doesn’t tell us about the fat and vaxxed patients because you damn well know that if they were unvaccinated, we wouldn’t have heard the end of it.

And it's been this way for years and I've been saying this for years. As for the deaths again it is legitimate to ask from or with Covid-19 and what comorbidities were present. It's also worth bearing in mind that complications from the common cold can be enough to kill a person at risk.

Pattaya was decimated at the height of Covid...most who could went home...there were long lines for food handouts and a large increase of poeple sleeping on the streets

every bar , disco and beach were closed,there was even periods of no booze for sale anywhere !

Only large shops could open and they were restricted to only selling  food.

AND as I (and medical experts) have been saying for years this particular variant with it's sub-variants is a non-severe viral infection.

It would destroy the lives of thousands if not millions of Thais. Horrible for the country, although I do remember of going to Chaengwattan for my retirement extension and enjoying only having two three people sitting in the waiting area.

A very good friend had a close friend who died a couple of years back after a long illness. For his final weeks he was in palliative care

His cause of death was listed as covid.

Long before that I had ceased to be moved by covid death numbers where they were not accompanied by

co-morbidity or even age data.

I'm a big believer in science and vaccines but the post December 2020 reaction to covid didn't cover governments or the medical fraternity with glory.

To see that continuing in 2025 is amazingly disappointing
