Dress Code On Flight.

Featured Replies

Traveling on an Emirates flight bound for Dubai I was sitting in a window seat and a dark skinned man, maybe Indian, dressed in shorts and a wife beater sat beside me.

I asked him to put on a shirt, but he obviously did not speak English, so I got up and said "excuse me" and went to find a flight attendant, she was very pleasant as was I.

I then went back to my seat expecting him to be sitting there, but he was gone. I then sat in my seat to be joined by two attractive girls.

My question is why was he not stopped from entering the plane and told to cover up? Is there not a dress code on planes?

I would not bother if they were, but I would certainly not like a man's full length hairy arms or legs right next to me for five mins never mind six hours.

I find the aircon on most flights to be too cold and windy to warrant shorts & T shirt. I wear long shirt and a jacket.  Seems silly that they issue all passengers with blankets to ward off the cold.

Maybe took off his shirt after the last check before boarding?

When I saw the headline of this thread I thought it was going to be about something ridiculous such as wearing slacks and a collared shirt !!...

But... you've made a wholly valid point: Just like being in any reasonable restaurant (non beach) there are certain reasonable social standards to adhere to and I quite agree - I wouldn't want to be making 'skin contact' with the passenger next to me.

Seems you handled this exactly as it should have been.

Fortunately - most passengers are always dressed within reasonable limits for this not to be an issue.

Shorts and a shirt are fine, as there are no dress codes unless it's offensive. I've seen women wearing the shortest of shorts on international flights and I don't get it, unless they've never flown before. It does get cold, especially for 12 hour flights. I can understand Bangkok to Phuket but not 12 hours.

You're hallucinating methinks.  Cut back on those purple mushrooms before the flight.  "Dress code."  I've heard it all now.
You're obviously a throwback to colonial times.  Or you're in the running with bob smith for silly troll posts.

This is the kind of comment characterised by people who go into a McDonalds without any shirt...

Or grace the BTS in a Chang vest and sweaty pits...

You know the type...    those who think its cool to say "suck it up" when someoene makes a perfectly valid point about basic common social decency.

I dress business casual on flights.  That's just me.  I'm comfortable in that attire.  I have no expectations that anyone else will dress business casual.  Dress code?  You own the plane?  Sorry, you don't get to make up arbitrary dress code rules for the rest of the passengers.  Don't like how the other passengers dress.  Charter a private jet.  You should be happy a fat slob didn't sit next to you and take up half your seat.

You, on the other hand, come across as a complete tool – first, for trying to force a faux-moral high ground by injecting racism into a conversation where it clearly doesn’t belong; and second, for that laughably snobbish remark suggesting that flying Economy somehow makes one a loser....

Nothing colonial...    But should vests really be acceptable on flights...  especially when is some hairy bloke.....

Would you (or any of us) really feel comfortable sat next to another 'vest wearing' version of ourselves for 6 hours ????

And if the so called Indian man had a seat in Business, is it OK then. Would it have made any difference if the passenger had been 'white' ?

Should it not be a reasonable expectation that those amongst whom we travel also show consideration towards their fellow passengers - I believe so and fortunately so do most passengers as 'hairy sweaty men in vests' is somewhat or a rarity.

If he'd been in Business Class he might have had the urge to pee - anywhere.

We are not all as fortunate as you to be able to afford the silly price of 'Business' class seats.

Who are you referring to?

I always wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers on flights, as it gets cold in the cabin. I have a light shirt to change into if necessary.

I take no notice of anyone sitting next to me, unless they are invading my space.

IMO obese people should pay extra for extra space.

Conceited, elitist, condescending, patronizing, snooty, Oxonian nobs on AN have offically come out of the WEF closet.  Fly coach and then want to dictate the attire other passengers wear.  Up next?  I have more money than you, I dress better than you, and my 💩 smells like 🌻.  Well in that case, fly First Class with the other posh gits. You might get away with that attitude in first class or even business class and the airline might even agree with you.  But I'm assuming your referring to flying in the manky, cattle-class with the plebs in steerage.  Really - pay for better seating, otherwise, "suck it up."  And as I stated above, and in past posts - I dress business casual when I fly, and generally dress that way whenever I go out of the house, at a minimum, slacks and a polo shirt unless I'm exercising.  I find it comfortable.  But I'm not a pounce would tries to dictate what other people wear to freaking McDonalds and in coach-class on flights.  Gawd.
