  • Worth trying: get a Thai TIN so that you have something to show to the bank on top of your visa. In order to get your TIN, tell TRD you need it to open a bank account eg in Singapore or Spain.

  • Immigration usually give a certificate of residence at the office you belong to. For bank account it seems to be very hard now. I would suggest using an agent.

  • The branch opposite Soi 6 opens at 8:30am whereas the one on Beach Road doesn't open until 10:00am.  The early opening can be an advantage on extension renewal days.

I opened an account at the Bangkok bank on Jomtien second road, next to soi 5, very close to immigration. It was a year ago, but very easy. Got my Certificate of Residence, then just walked a couple of hundred metres.

A lot has been going on since then.....although I hear if one has the prerequisites now, things are working. IE Married to a Thai, or a long term extension/visa or own property, plus the cert of residence, an account can be had. Might get pressured to buy insurance at a few branches though.

What would that cost, insurance?

How long is a piece of string? They have accident policies that might be only 5-10,000, but also carry full medical policies which head towards 80,000+ for older people and depending on coverage!

No mention of insurance when I went to this branch.

From some articles and reports I saw a few years ago, Bangkok Bank staff were pushing for the purchase of an accident insurance policy when opening an account.  The annual fee was around 3,000 baht as I recall.  Someone I know that pays for an annual accident policy pays his insurance broker a fee of around 2,400 baht for the policy.

Indeed: when I opened my account at Bangkok Bank in 2021, I had no problems opening it with a tourist visa, but all branches required a one-year accident medical insurance policy of 3,000 baht.

After that, it wasn't necessary to keep renewing the policy every year.
