Expiring temporary licence and certificate of residence not possible

Featured Replies

My (temporary) 2 year Thai driving licence expires in a week from now.

Apparently, I need a new certificate of residence to renew this. I can't get this from the (UK) embassy, meaning I need to get it from (Bangkok) Immigration (Chaeng Wattana). And this is only possible once I've done at least one 90 day report from my last entry to Thailand.

I have only recently re-entered Thailand on a new non-O. I won't be doing a 90-day report until about 5 month's time - 90 days after doing my extension of stay.

All this seems to point to me being without a Thai licence for 5 months. Do I have this right, as regards the renewal and the cert of residence? Has anyone been in a similar position?

Thanks in advance.

Nope, 90 day report not required for residency certificate

CW changed that rule some time back, you can now get a CoR without having done a 90 day report.  You must have a valid TM30.  They will mail the CoR to your registered address.

I got a CoR a couple of weeks ago for a car sale.

No 90 day report but a TM 30. However it was 95 days since my last entry so when I handed over the documents she asked where my 90 day report was. I told her I didn't have one but had an appointment an hour from then to do it (I was doing both CoR and 90 days on the same day). She said don't worry about that, went to the 90 day report desk (three desks away) and told them not to call my number, then she did my 90 day report as well as my CoE. Nice lady.

But as others have said if your 90 days is not due then you only need a TM30.

You can get a new license up to one year after your current one expires. I assume you will be wanting the 5 year license if you have a Non-O.

Your expired license won't be valid for driving once it expires, but you don't have to worry about renewing it any time soon.

I never noticed there was a 90-report issue when getting a CoR. This would imply you couldn't renew any driving licence shortly after flying back to Thailand.

There isn't an issue. If you haven't been due to do a 90 day report since you landed then you don't need one, only a TM30.

However if you have been here over 90 days they will likely ask for a report.

I have done two CoRs in the last four months. First one I had been less than 90 days in the country since my last entry so wasn't asked for a 90 day report. For the other one I had been here 95 days and I was asked for a 90 day report.

Go to immigration they will make you a letter of residence using your current address, if you want you licenses dont mention if youve moved it really doesn’t matter, my 5 years are still registered in rayong.

Yellow house book and pink Thai ID is the easy solution 🤪

When I changed my 2 year temp license to 5 year, 7 years ago, DLT accepted the pink ID card and the yellow house book. But when I renewed my 5 year license 2 years ago, DLT would not accept these and insisted on CoR from immigration. Luckily immigration issued the CoR because 7 years ago they refused to.  So best not to make any assumptions and be prepared for anything.

Yellow book with your name in it proves residency and the pink ID supports it, where did you fail ?

Just renewed my license with no issues also bought a car also using them and sold a motorcycle .....

Depends on the DLT office, Some will accept and some not.

That you can speak doesn't matter.
