Using ChatGPT? It might make you stupid, study finds

Using ChatGPT? It might make you stupid, study finds

Using AI could impact your ability to learn, think and remember, a new study has found.

Students who used large language models (LLM) like ChatGPT to write essays showed to have poorer memory, reduced brain activity and weaker engagement than those who used other methods, the study found.

Researchers at MIT Media Lab measured electrical activity in the brain to track 54 students over several essay-writing sessions.

One group used ChatGPT, another used Google and the last had no external help at all.

Oh dear!  Who would have thought? Thanks Daily Mail. 🤣

Chat PTG - and all A.I. - can suck it.

Real men use their God given brains to figure stuff out.

Probably right to a certain extent. I wanted some stats on Diabetes, comparing uk to Thailand.

Of course I got the answers in seconds, but there was no effort on my behalf.

When we're looking for summink, in our search we discover other things, learn about associated stuff.

Here's the diabetes facts:

It is easy to look up things you already know something about, and hit their sources for back up credibility.

Saves me hips of time especially when you are a bit challenged with to many thumbs and dyslexia

Sometimes I need to read three times, and two times I can read  different mesning than it actually stands there. So if you are consensus about what you reading, I find AI great.

So, I'm trying to get better by trying and not using to much confusing tools.

Jokes aside, though & referring to my diabetes search.

I was convinced that Thailand had a higher incidence of it. My theory, was wrong & my train of thought has led me on a better path, more quickly.

Buy then, it is the daily mail & they are, full of shyte. mostly.

I'll ask ChatGPT if my opinion is correct..🤣😊

While we're on the subject, does anyone use ChatGPT plus? It's 750 baht/month & don't know if I'll get more benefit or more lazy..

Anyone...??

If you don't use it you lose it. Offload enough of your thinking to a computer and will forget how to think.

So I asked Chat GPT for a comment on this and here is what it said:

Thanks for raising this. Here's a thoughtful and honest response ChatGPT might give to that Mail Online article:

Response:

It's true that relying too heavily on AI tools like ChatGPT can affect how deeply we engage with material—just as overreliance on calculators can reduce math fluency or GPS can weaken navigation skills. If users passively accept answers without thinking critically or making an effort to understand, it can lead to reduced retention and cognitive engagement, as suggested by the study.

However, it's not the tool itself that's the problem—it's how it's used.

When used actively and thoughtfully—such as to brainstorm ideas, ask questions, clarify concepts, or get feedback on writing—ChatGPT can enhance learning and even improve memory retention through interactive dialogue. It's similar to having a tutor on demand.

So, the key is this: Use ChatGPT as a supplement, not a substitute. Think of it as a partner in learning, not a shortcut. Just like with any technology, the quality of the outcome depends on the intentions and habits of the user.

I still use the free version but it does have a daily cap on what you can ask it.

No,

You can save a lot of time.

And anyway, the internet is already an AI, but mostly human.

We always need to look things up.

You can ask ChatGPT if you have a business idea. It will give you pretty good advice.

Do 'real men' also not use Google or the internet?

Yeah when i see a ten year old who can not add 5 plus seven without the use of his phone.

People are stupid and it is only getting worse.

Not only AI or chat PTG,people drive into lakes and canals because google maps told them to!

There is a fine limit for some, while others follows the fluctuations of the markeds.

If you bought a house and land before 2008,maintained it,  and still holds it? You won? Right

The land might be worth more than you ever invested and used for maintenance.

If you have deficiency of vitamins, you need vitamins, so backed up knownledge might help to take the right decisions. Not black and white

Indeed, common sense is not as common as it used to be.

Like most things the secret is in moderation and control of use.

No one cap fits all.

Yes, I use it. It's very useful. I never did use the free version, I went straight in with the paid tier so I have nothing to compare it to - been using it and a couple of other paid services for a few years now.

I've used them since they got better at providing results than google for specific types of questions.

I don't use it to think for me, I ask it very specific technical questions and it provides answers, not always correct but mostly correct. The thing is, I'm smart enough to know when it's talking rubbish and point it out and the response is typically 'You're right to point that out, here is a reviewed answer' or something like that.

But I generally know what I'm talking about when using it - I'm just asking for details on something very specific like a linux commands parameter format or a database structure inside a well known open source system and how one thing relates to another inside the system in the databases, etc, even if I know little about that system I can very quickly determine if it's wrong and tell it so - then it will come back with a corrected answer.

Sometimes with technical questions like this it may be referring to an older or newer version of whatever it is I'm using so it's not entirely wrong - just wrong for my specific use case.

Now if I'm looking for something very specific that is more suited to a keyword search I will use google. Just knowing the difference between these 2 type of search / query is half the job.

It's demonstrated on this forum, by those who just paste in Grok results as if they were wielding the ultimate debating weapon, or will dismiss an argument because "AI has nothing to say about it". Real intelligence ends where artificial intelligence begins.

You got offended?

There are several IQ tests showing different results, so calm down, but in all of them there is the same top 5 more or less.

Never said Russians are stupid,
