Bangkok workers are in for a pay raise as the daily minimum wage leaps to 400 baht, marking a major shift approved by the government.

The Cabinet has recognised the decision by the tripartite Wage Committee, causing an uplift from 372 to 400 baht per day. This long-awaited boost, effective from today, is set to benefit around 700,000 workers in the capital.

Deputy government spokesperson Sasikarn Watthanachan confirmed the change, describing it as a crucial step forward, made official on June 17. The decision has been published in the Royal Gazette and is now fully in effect, offering economic relief to many.

Additionally, workers in key sectors outside Bangkok will also receive the 400 baht wage. This includes employees in sectors such as tourism and services, particularly those working in two-star hotels or higher, as well as entertainment venues, under the Entertainment Venue Act.

The wage improvement outside the capital targets unskilled workers, extending today's benefits to provinces with high tourist traffic. For workers in unspecified sectors, however, wages remain unchanged, adhering to 2024's wage levels set last December.

The Labour Ministry highlights that this increment addresses the high cost of living, aiming to uplift low-income workers amid challenging economic conditions. It's a strategic move aligned with government objectives to enhance living standards.

With this upgrade, many anticipate economic stability, viewing it as a pivotal moment for long-term growth. This widespread reform is promising for workers across Bangkok and other dynamic provinces engaged in hospitality and entertainment.

To get things in perspective, that's 400 Baht per day. 400 Baht is currently equivalent to approximately 19 Australian dollars.

In Australia, the national minimum wage is now $24.95 per hour, as from 1 July 2025, which means that the daily minimum wage in Thailand is less than the hourly minimum wage in Australia.

Assuming the average working day is around 8 hours, a Thai worker on the minimum wage, earns around 1/10th of an Australian worker who is on the minimum wage in Australia.

Thailand has a long way to go.

Far too less for a normal living.. In Phetchaburi the daily wage is 351 THB.. How can people manage to support the economy if the big earners and elite keep the money away from the ones who must earn their wages?  Too much to die and too less for a living.. I thought modern slavery did not exist.. stupid me

Here come even more of the illegals - they will work for less than that - and do a better job.

Utopian socialist delusions always confuse wants and needs - and have a very limited understanding of cause and effect.

All thumbs up Emoji's duly noted and accepted.

In a cheaper country , wages are lower , logical .

Since when is it cheap?? prices are going higher and higher almost every month.. Have you tried to live with 400THB a day??

Wages should be regularly updated to reflect the cost of living.

This could vary considerably between different provinces.

Businesses generally upgrade their prices to reflect costs and ensure continuing profitability.  Although admittedly there can be other considerations, such as maintaining competitiveness.  Or lack of competition.

Buddy if the minimum wage was 2000 baht a day then tourism would plummet by 80%. It's the cheap prices that attract them.

Thailand work week is 48hrs.

6 days x 8hrs.

Over 8hrs/day is paid at OT rates.

Cheap housing , cheap food , cheap transport.

Usually there are more than one people in a household that have a wage.

Strange, last time I went shopping I saw prices of some items go down.

And yes years ago , it was kind of a sport for me to stay under 400 B/day.

years ago... yeah... than you had maybe live with 300 THB/day.. but I suppose with 400 THB you did not need to pay rent, electricity, water and insurances...That are Thai people have to do too , not only their shopping and if they have kids they have to buy shoes and clothes too... Many people can't do it and indeed they HAVE to live with several people together because 1 person will not have enough
