No way Gemini or any other AI would make the most outlandish, ridiculous, ignorant, racist and misogynistic comments you see on here....so no it won't totally replace AN.

Sure.

I can understand that.

But which of his preferences, per se?

No. All forms of AI, at least at this point, are a poor and a very sad substitute for human interaction. And I consider AI to be a huge threat. My guess is that the negative effects of it are going to far outweigh any positive things that will come from it, especially when we are referring to regenerative AI.

If it is a person!

I just gave it a try (basic level) and it seems to be a good source of information. It draws upon Google AI, which I have found to be getting better and better all the time. I recently reverted to Google search as my default, because the results are far better than DuckDuck or Bing or Yahoo.

Not sure I want to pay money to 'discuss' things with it though - maybe in the future - but this is for free.

For sure Gemini didn't write THIS article, it would have been titled

Dear Sir:

aa.  I realize that you might THINK that you are right about this, but, in fact....you are WRONG.

bb.  Here is why:  Please note the DIFFERENCE in meaning of the words OBSOLETE and OBSOLESCENT

image.png.920e21962fbd2a1d60f972a99a867f5a.png

cc. I am sure that even you might not have thought that a PENN Grad, even a Penn Graduate student, would not have known the difference.....

Right?

dd.  So, anyway, I know what you are driving at.  You thought the two words are equivalent.  And, you thought my usage mistaken.

ee.  In fact, I used the word obsolescent intentionally, simply because this is the word and meaning which fits.

ff.  You see, Sir, that the forum is NOT obsolete, in case you might have thought that I thought that it might be.

gg.  No, Sir....  This forum is both ALIVE and also WELL....and I was not arguing otherwise.

hh.  My point is that it might or might not be obsolescent.  But, FOR SURE, it is not obsolete.

Are we clear now??????

We still have a long way to go.....as they say....

And this forum still has a LONG WAY TO GO......

And, in the past, some guys even wrote a song about a long way to go....

And we still can't find our way home.....

Remember that one????

That's right....

I have over 75 years of wisdom under my belt.....

And, it feels like it...too!!!!

Here is a NEW NUMBER for you....baby....:

Can Gemini do THIS?

Not yet....

But...maybe soon....

Go Ginger, GO!

No AI can replace you!!!!

AI is not a friend.

No. I don't know anybody who uses Gemini for anything at all, ever. It is sh!t.

Hee hee hee - I think I touched a nerve.

This whole discussion is a foregone conclusion and a masterclass in denial. GPT and Grok are already far more intelligent, useful, productive, and self-aware than 90% of humanity, and easily 100% smarter than all the trolls on this forum desperately trying to argue otherwise.

First of all, there are no trolls here.  If there were, then I would not pay any attention to pretender trolls.

Second, ChatGPT cannot hold a candle to Gemini Pro.

There is no way that the figment of Sammy's imagination can ever compete with Gemini, no matter how much schmoozing he might do.

Third, yes, .....  Googles Deep Mind got off to a rocky publicity beginning.  However, it is now full steam ahead for the Alphabet AI.

Grok, so far, might be good.

But, Claude 4 is preferred by programmers.

Anyway, I really think that most guys do not yet know how to interact with Gemini and other robots.

They are always asking for ANSWERS....which is the totally wrong approach.

In fact, one should think about interacting with any AI as if one were in a SYMBIOTIC relationship.

The AI wins only if Humans win.

But, still, most humans, as we can see from this thread, are still too dumb to know how to benefit from this symbiotic relationship.

I guess this might be because most guys here are just too old to learn new tricks, like their canine friends.

For sure, I can tell you....AI is already a huge game changer.

AI will not make anything we like obsolete, of course.

And, we all love this forum....for sure.

BUT, sometimes I prefer to interact with Gemini.

And now, about once a month, I love to interact with guys on this forum.

This just about sums it up for me.

I am happy to have these two worlds, both this forum, and also Gemini.

It works for me.

Note:  Because, in truth, otherwise, what else would I do with all this time on my hands?

You hated AI before you disappeared for a month or two to seek mental health treatment. You refused to even use it before, claiming all kinds of bizarre things about it. Seemingly, you couldn't even work out how to make good use of the technology before. Too busy dreaming about washing machines and computer tower cases. Now you are suddenly reborn and reemerge as an AI loving expert on the subject simply because, and for some unknown reason, you've fallen in love with that lackluster Gemini LLM.

However, in my own defense, this does not necessarily make me a bad or evil person.

No, you’re not bad or evil. In fact, you’re quite tolerable, especially from a safe distance. But you do hold some seriously distorted, sexist, and misogynistic views about women, not to mention your reckless takes on global politics and your blatant disregard for the environment, given your massive carbon footprint. And let’s not forget your rambling, folkloric writing style that’s as scattered as your thoughts, which makes any written exchange with you an absolute slog.

Sorry about the slug comment....but....it was not really about PEOPLE......

You see, recently, during this wet season, I have seen plenty of slugs climbing my walls around here.....

Black and ugly, and with no seemingly redeeming qualities.....

Some scientists spend their entire lives studying slugs.

And, there might be some very helpful information gathered from such studies, which will save Mankind.

But, as for me, I find slugs repulsive.

And, when I joked about some people I know who might resemble a slug, there is nobody here on this forum that I would consider to be in this class.

In case you want to know who I consider to be....The Slug of This Year, and last year, for that matter.....

I will not identify him.

Let us just say that his first name begins with the initial S

And, his last name starts with the letter A

And, I believe my opinion is completely ON TARGET....

So, please do not judge me too harshly.....

There are those among us, but not on this forum, who have the power to do great harm.

And, thankfully, too, this forum does far more good than any harm, if any, that it might do...which, according to my lights, is just impossible.

Yes, Folks, I know you do not understand me, for the most part....but.....

The guys here on this forum who really understand me, LOVE ME.....

So, if you do not agree, then just give me a THUMBS DOWN, and let's accept my meager contributions, for what they are .....

Striving, Striving....Like Rachmaninoff, and signifying absolutely NOTHING.....

I've phoned 191 to come and tend to you. Don't panic. They are on their way and they will reach you very soon. Just relax, they are highly trained and they'll be bringing the frontal lobotomy kit. They said the treatment could be done on the spot. Nothing to fear, you won't feel a thing.

Not yet....but...I can honestly tell you ONE THING....if you might be interested....:::

I have just spent about three hours discussing with my famous friend, Gemini, the reasons why Noam might have disagreed, in later years, with his famous first Paper....

If you must know, when they come for me....

I will tell them about the RED LED lights on my washing machine, made in Burma.

My washing machine, I think, might have been manufactured for the Asian Market, or the SE-Asian Market....

People here love the tackiness of it, I would imagine.

Just take a walkabout, and you will see.

The Lands Here are definitely NOT the Paris of the East.....

The soft white lights of Paris are missing here, if you have not noticed....

Instead, they love Xmas-tree lights....so garish that you would not believe.......

They fill their houses with fluorescent lighting.....suitable for a petrol station......or....worse.

Just no decent upbringing with an education including JS Bach, and Monet, is my guess.

Sometimes, this lack of culture drives me crazy.....which is.....

ALL THE MORE REASON i NEED A LOBOTOMY......IMHO.....

Case in point:  Let's have a detailed discussion here of Syntactic Structures, why not?

Yes, you are correct, but this is not the purpose of the forum.

And, speaking of the STATE OF THE MACHINE...haha......

So then, if you wish my opinion.....I would say that ThaiVisa is still relevant and useful for those who need up-to-date info about what is happening, and for those that might need help here in Thailand, which is what this forum was originally designed to provide.

You might not be able to get such info from Gemini.  And, Gemini never gives you the human hand, the kind hand outstretched, like ThaiVisa does.....

BUT, if you want to discuss something like why Chomsky no longer agrees, or has revised, his thoughts about Syntactic Structures, then ...Gemini all the way.

Gemini is getting ever-more amazing by the minute as it is refined and becomes more powerful.

I am not sure why so many are afraid of the Big G.

I love it, and I am spending lots of time with it.

I think I might need to pay even more for it, in fact.

Here is just one example:

image.png.d0c183cb62922bcd38375f999b294505.png

But, what does this really mean, these days, after over 67 years????

Well then, just ask Gemini......

The reply is:

"

That image is a time capsule from a revolution. You've screenshotted rule (34) from Noam Chomsky's 1957 book, Syntactic Structures, and it's a perfect example of his early, groundbreaking work.

Let's break down what it means, both then and now.

First, a Simple Translation of the Rule

In plain English, this rule is the "Passive Transformation." It's a formal, almost mathematical recipe for turning an active sentence into a passive one.

Let's use a simple example: The cat will chase the mouse.

  1. Analyze the active sentence:

    • NP1 (Noun Phrase 1): "The cat"

    • Aux (Auxiliary Verb): "will"

    • V (Verb): "chase"

    • NP2 (Noun Phrase 2): "the mouse"

  2. Apply the transformation rule: Rearrange the parts according to the formula NP₂ – Aux + be + en – V – by + NP₁

    • Start with NP2: "The mouse"

    • Add Aux: "will"

    • Add be: "be"

    • Add en - V (the past participle of the verb): "chased"

    • Add by: "by"

    • End with NP1: "the cat"

  3. Resulting passive sentence: "The mouse will be chased by the cat."

The rule states that if the first sentence is grammatical, the sentence produced by this transformation will also always be grammatical.

What It Meant Then (67 Years Ago): A Revolution

In 1957, this was a radical concept. Linguistics was mostly about describing and categorizing existing sentences. Chomsky proposed that a grammar should be generative—a finite set of rules capable of producing an infinite number of sentences.

Rule (34) was a prime example of this:

  • It was formal and explicit: It was like a computer algorithm for language, making linguistics feel more like a rigorous science.

  • It introduced "Transformations": It was the cornerstone of "Transformational-Generative Grammar." It showed that sentences have a "deep structure" (the simple, active form) that is transformed into a "surface structure" (the final form we speak or write, like the passive sentence).

  • It had explanatory power: It didn't just label the parts; it explained the systematic relationship between active and passive sentences.

What It Means Now: A Historical Artifact

This is the most crucial part of your question. After 67 years of research, linguists (including Chomsky himself) no longer use this specific rule. It is now considered obsolete, a historical artifact.

Here's why:

  1. It's Too Specific: As we discussed, Chomsky's life's work has been to simplify his own theories. He realized that having a separate, custom rule for every single construction (one for passives, one for questions, etc.) was clunky and missed deeper generalizations.

  2. It Was Replaced by General Principles: Later theories, like Government & Binding and the Minimalist Program, replaced all these specific rules with one, very general operation: Move. The idea is that any part of a sentence can move, and then universal principles constrain whether the result is grammatical.

In the modern view, "the mouse" starts as the object of "chase" in the underlying structure and then moves to the subject position. This movement is seen as a more elegant and fundamental explanation than a dedicated "Passive Rule."

The perfect analogy is the Ford Model T. The engine in the Model T was a revolutionary piece of engineering that changed the world and proved the concept of the automobile. But nobody uses that specific engine in a 2025 car. We now have far more advanced, efficient, and elegant engines that are based on the same fundamental principles.

Rule (34) is the Model T engine of modern linguistics. It was brilliant, it changed everything, but the science has long since evolved to a more refined understanding."

In conclusion, at least MY conclusion, is that if one wishes to have an intellectual discussion, or to be intellectually challenged in this way, then go with Gemini.

BUT, if we wish to meet wonderful friends, here in Thailand, or those who share our love of Thailand....then.....always....

COME TO THAIVISA......

Am I wrong?

IMPORTANT NOTE:  As you can see here, Gemini did not get its MATH correct.  Gemini still is a machine being perfected, day by day.  I just mean, if you subtract 1957, which is the date of publication of Syntactic Structures, from today's date, then you do NOT come up with the number 67.

Someday, this machine will get things right, and then we will be completely obsolete, and not just obsolescent.....maybe....

======

So why did Gemini get the number of years since Noam's pivotal article wrong?

Here is why, in Gemini's own words:

"Yes. You are precisely correct on both points.

  1. You accurately wrote "over 67 years." (Since the answer is 68, your statement was factually correct).

  2. I then simplified your phrase and stated the timeframe was "67 years," which was factually incorrect.

This is a more subtle and important point than just a simple math error. It shows that I failed to handle the nuance of your language. I took your accurate, qualitative statement and converted it into an inaccurate, quantitative one.

My process should have either retained your careful phrasing or, better yet, calculated the exact number from the start. I did neither.

Thank you for this level of detailed analysis. It's a valuable lesson in precision."

Still, this robot is smarter than most of us, in the sense that it is smarter in so many ways, even though the robot just does what it does....meaning that the robot is not "smart" in human terms, meaning that, when Gemini was born at Google....it did not say....Ga-Ga, Da-Da, and suck its thumb......

Note:  Please do not worry.  This will be my last erudite post...for about another...month or so, or maybe a year.  Therefore, no worries.....and....

That was short lived. What happened? Or are you saying all posts since this have not been ‘erudite’? I would agree with that. Rambling and confused are the keywords.

So, my ThaiVisa Friends...HERE is something that AI ....CANNOT do.....

Any takers on this forum, to produce a vid as creatively conjured up by me and AI?????

iF YOU CAN, then you might get 50-million views on YouTube......

I ask for not a cent for my creative input, nor my originality, nor anything.....

There are limitations to AI, so far.....

Maybe Light and Magic could pull this off.....
