    Why on Earth would you run a children's camp in "one of the most flash-flood-prone areas of the U.S."?! Why would you allow any housing structures or any building permits in such an area?! It also app

Some experts say staff shortages might have complicated forecasters’ ability to coordinate responses with local emergency management officials.

Of course they say that. Using dead children to attack Trump beofe the bodies are found. Dancing on the dead children.

They also said that before the floods:

Head of local weather warnings takes early retirement as NOAA cuts continue

Updated: Apr 21, 2025 / 09:02 PM CDT

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Paul Yura, the warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio office, has announced he has taken the early retirement offer as part of NOAA’s recent cuts to personnel and budget.

As for a replacement to the WCM, the current hiring freeze, as mentioned by Yura in his message, may make filling that role more challenging.

(POTUS Trump took questions at NJ airport before returning to WashDC):

Asked later on if he had plans to look into whether the cuts at the National Weather Service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency left key positions vacant, Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick shook their heads.

“They didn’t,” Trump said. “I’ll tell you: You look at that water situation, that was really the Biden setup. That was not our setup. But I wouldn’t blame Biden for it either; I would just say this is a hundred-year catastrophe, and it’s just so horrible to watch.”

Sadly the death toll is over 100 now…..my condolences to the bereaved families.

AS to solely NY Times headline this AM:

‘ Some experts…might have’ :

Purely an assumption made by some unnamed experts.

 Now onto a more factual account.

Per ABC news:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration told ABC News that NWS planned for extra staffing at the NWS Austin/San Antonio local office ahead of the event. The local office had five NWS employees working compared to the two that would normally be scheduled.

🤓🤓🤓

Thank you Ms. Leavitt.

The key staffing position vacated by 30-year employee Paul Yura who was the warning coordination meteorologist -- which is a formal US Code job description as below -was still vacant following his retirement in April.

15 USC 8545: Warning coordination meteorologists at weather forecast offices of National Weather Service
Text contains those laws in effect on July 6, 2025

(b) Primary role of warning coordination meteorologists
The primary role of the warning coordination meteorologist shall be to carry out the responsibilities required by this section.

(c) Responsibilities
(1) In general
Subject to paragraph (2), consistent with the analysis described in section 409,1 and in order to increase impact-based decision support services, each warning coordination meteorologist designated under subsection (a) shall-

(A) be responsible for providing service to the geographic area of responsibility covered by the weather forecast office at which the warning coordination meteorologist is employed to help ensure that users of products of the National Weather Service can respond effectively to improve outcomes from weather events;

(B) liaise with users of products and services of the National Weather Service, such as the public, media outlets, users in the aviation, marine, and agricultural communities, and forestry, land, and water management interests, to evaluate the adequacy and usefulness of the products and services of the National Weather Service;

(C) collaborate with such weather forecast offices and State, local, and tribal government agencies as the Director considers appropriate in developing, proposing, and implementing plans to develop, modify, or tailor products and services of the National Weather Service to improve the usefulness of such products and services;

(D) ensure the maintenance and accuracy of severe weather call lists, appropriate office severe weather policy or procedures, and other severe weather or dissemination methodologies or strategies; and

(E) work closely with State, local, and tribal emergency management agencies, and other agencies related to disaster management, to ensure a planned, coordinated, and effective preparedness and response effort.

"When we learned of the climbing death toll, including some two dozen girl campers at the beloved childhood nirvana of Camp Mystic, it was impossible not to think of Musk and Trump’s thoughtless, ill-planned hacking away at the professional expertise in government agencies like the National Weather Service.

  Six hundred NWS staffers were dispatched, including the warning coordination meteorologist in the Austin-San Antonio office, who took the DOGE buyout last spring."

So the guy retired just 2 months ago, the Dems and activist judges are blocking every new Trump appointment and somehow it's Trump's fault?  In spite of extra staff on duty for the storm...

From ABC link above:

Leavitt was asked on Monday why the warnings were sent at a time when people were likely asleep and what, if anything, the administration is doing to ensure that these alerts come out sooner in the future.

"This was an act of God, it is not the administration's fault that the flood hit when it did but there were early and consistent warnings," Leavitt said. "And again, the National Weather Service did its job."

Camp Mystic was at a particular disadvantage due to its location near the headwaters of the Guadalupe, reducing the warning period for evacuation.

The tragedy has already raised questions about whether more could have been done to raise the alarm and prompt evacuations.

The National Weather Service, which had previously issued a flash flood watch for the area, issued a flash flood warning at 1:14 a.m. on Friday, triggering cell phone alerts urgently warning of life-threatening danger.

However, the rural area is known for spotty cell service, and Camp Mystic did not allow campers to keep cell phones in their cabins.

By 4 a.m., devastating floodwaters filled with floating debris were already ripping through Camp Mystic, sending campers and counselors fleeing for their lives.

According to KXAN, county officials didn’t issue warnings until four hours after the NWS alerts, at 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. By that time, the floodwaters had already claimed scores of lives.
