Contrary to popular belief, most people focus on what they are insecure about, not what they have achieved.

 

The primary reason for this (my theory) is that one needs to place insecurities onto other people in order to be rid of them (either just the thought/feeling of them, or sometimes the actual problem).  

 

The reason (my theory) of why achievements and accomplishments are not treated the same way is similar. By talking about them they are, in their head or sometimes physically by giving away advantages, plans & info, symbolically/unconsciously giving away what is owed or accomplished to other people.

 

The more positive, obvious and immediate the declaration tends to be (like right away or at a bar stool) the more someone is worried about that issue and needs to rid themselves of it. On the flip side, it can also manifest as complaining which is the same thing, that is a discharge of problems and the associated energy onto an external target.

 

The deciding factor of how it's conveyed is probably what the person thinks you will listen to more in the immediate situation, or their personality.

 

 

 

 

To address the actual question in the OP.

 

Of course there is an over representation of such people in Thailand!

Because of it's attractions of easy entry and stay, cheap living, exotica, scenery, climate, etc. this country has become an end destination for much of the world's detritus.

People who don't fit comfortably in their home country because of lack of retirement funds, loss of close relstionships, loneliness, criminality, mental illness or simply needing to re-invent themselves as something bigger than their reality, move here.

In the crowded expat bars, they can find a plethera of similar lost souls assuaging their various demons with cheap booze. Many are very eager to meld in with their peers and are open to social intercourse with strangers.

The story tellers, who  harbour a need to magnify their deeds and persona, are in hog heaven.

Pattaya is, or was, Home to half a dozen Chauffeurs  to Queen Elizabeth, Lottery winners who are always asking  to borrow money, and ex; SAS members who cant  remember where they did their training  !!!

You meet alot of these types in Pattaya. 

 

They also tend to be very racist and pontificate about immigration in the UK.
