Thailand is on high alert as the Meteorological Department warns of potential heavy rainfall and flash floods across the country, with intensified monsoon conditions expected until July 24. Based on models from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), regions could see rainfall exceeding 750 millimetres.

Immediate Risk to Northern Provinces

Starting from today, the upper North and Northeast regions are facing the brunt of the monsoon, experiencing both light and heavy rainfall. Provinces such as Tak, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai are particularly vulnerable. In the Northeast, heavy rain is forecast for Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, and Sakon Nakhon, raising fears of flash floods and runoff due to their location along the monsoon ridge.

Southern and Eastern Regions Not Spared

The southern regions, including Ranong, Phang Nga, and Phuket, along with the eastern provinces of Chanthaburi and Trat, are not exempt from the deluge. These areas along the coasts continue to deal with heavy monsoon-induced rainfall, impacting daily activities and raising concerns about localised flooding.

Mid to Late July Forecast

Between July 14 and 17, the northern half of Thailand is predicted to experience light to moderate rain, interspersed with heavy showers, especially in the upper North and Northeast. The southern provinces will also anticipate significant rainfall. As the monsoon strengthens, fluctuations between light and heavy rain are expected from July 18 to 27, potentially exacerbating flood risks.

Staying Informed and Prepared

The Meteorological Department urges residents to stay informed through weather updates and be prepared for potential hazards such as flash floods and landslides. This involves paying close attention to local warnings and taking necessary precautions to ensure safety.

The economic impact of such weather events can be substantial, with disruptions potentially affecting agriculture and local businesses. Understanding and preparing for these conditions is crucial for minimising damage and ensuring public safety.

Residents are encouraged to monitor reliable weather sources and heed any advisories issued by local authorities. In times like these, being informed can make a significant difference, potentially saving lives and reducing economic loss.

That's a LOT!

Last year I believe it was that the Thai government's flood preparedness plan was "Seek Higher Ground."

Has anything changed?

Unlike the last couple of years it would seem that the wet season has started on time.
